Take this from me: I don't want pedoshit on this wiki (those who can't live without it can go to ATT), but OTOH I also don't want it bowdlerized until it's suitable for kindergarten kids and prissy puritans - but nobody else.

TV Tropes started with a userbase which consisted of fans of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly. This had the advantage that they implicitly agreed which level of sex, violence, and... bad words was OK for them: Anything happening in these shows would be fine to talk about and be quoted or depicted as well. Anything which goes beyond that level could be a problem.

That's something I would like to. Back to the roots, so to speak.

And while we're talking about policies, as said elsewhere:

Max has already been blocked by the time I write those words, but I think what he said it's already poisonous enough I need to write something before it escalates: if this wiki ever begins to delete pages of certain controversial works because they fit in some vague definition of "pedoshit", then we will be no different of Tv Tropes and we may as well just cease to exist because why we would need two Tv Tropes? If Wikia comes in and demands we delete pages because it hurts their "clean" image, that may or may not happen, we move elsewhere.

We're an encyclopedia, we don't create content or promote it, we describe it. I think it has worked well all those years despite some setbacks, like Wikia coming here and demanding we refer to certain people in the way they wanted to, what resulted in Geth being banned when he disagreed. What is that content isn't important as long it fits the definitions of the wiki. And it's fictional anyway, nobody is hurt by it.

Well, there's the branch on Miraheze and the owners are more or less hands-off unless you're doing some dumb shit on here. As for Wikia...There's an lot of shit going on and it will certainly get an lot worse. But it just might not happen next year or the year after.

However, I would like to ask what is up with the sense of urgency surrounding this? Because so far, this hasn't been an issue for several years, as far as I can tell and the only time when upper management actually showed up was over Geth being banned for...Announcing that there's an elephant dancing in his living room, so to speak. And probably over Nate, but I think that started on an different wiki.

This is going rather far off from the original topic of the thread, and I think can deserve its own. But anyway.

My impression is that fandom.com is a more stable organisation than miraheze when it comes to technical or managerial stuff (as in: likely to be around and functioning well in several years time). Fandom.com is also more innovative from a technical and design standpoint (this is both a plus and a minus). On the other hand, fandom.com has to deal with investors wanting profit, growth, or buzzwords as well as the pressures of the ad industry. That can lead to all sorts of bad community- and contributor-unfriendly decisions, policies, or tendencies.

I have seen some of fandom.com's staff grok a bit of the latter issue, and I'd say a it's a major concern for a lot of us fandom stars that gets raised a lot.

By the way, I've literally seen the company overturn an community vote via an private discussion, fwiw. Obviously people were pissed about it

Not knowing which case you talk about, I can't really have any opinion on its merits. But I think fandom.com as an entity has a greater leeway and capacity to interfere with individual wikis than Miraheze, no doubt. Sometimes this is for good, like in the way they blocked one or two highly toxic bureaucrats and admins on Wookieepedia, probably saving that wiki from itself. So both a plus and a minus again (probably more often a minus lately, with the new anti-slur policy as the most recent example; I judge that to be largely ad-driven: "no bad words on our pages!").

I was mainly referring to this talk page. But to be fair, this is the only incident that I've seen where they've interfered with an community vote.
