I will second that. If the goal behind having item A on the site is specifically to attract group B, then you're chasing ratings, the same as TV networks. How many tropes do we have about TV shows that didn't have instant through the roof ratings so the network stopped putting any effort into promoting them and didn't give them a chance?
We have an advantage those other two sites don't. Because we're a part of Fandom, we don't have to chase ratings due to operating costs. Fandom covers those ongoing costs, leaving us free to focus on what we want to be interested in, not what we have to be interested in.
When you do things because you want to instead of because you have to, you're likely to put more effort into it and it may end up a lot better than if you were required to do it. Kind of do it for your own personal satisfaction instead of doing it for the money.
If what we do is something we enjoy and it turns out to be something that more people also enjoy, then the audience increases because we have broad appeal for them.
