- Acceptable Targets: Hipster
- Cargo Ship: Max and Caroline's bathtub.
- Designated Villain: In-universe. The guy who gave Caroline a measly $1.47 tip has his date walk away in disgust that he's a cheapskate. This is despite the fact he fairly points out that tipping, while customary, is entirely optional. It should be noted that he spent $50 on the date, so he's hardly a cheapskate and that money will go to Max and Caroline's wages anyway.
- Ear Worm: The theme song, which is also used for transitions.
- Ethnic Scrappy: Han or Oleg to some people.
- Even The Girls Want Them: Naturally alot of the audience loves these woman.
- Freud Was Right: Caroline insists that she isn't sexually frustrated despite making a bed that suspiciously looks like a vagina.
- Fridge Brilliance:
- The reason Caroline has never done anything she regrets with a man because in her head, it's Ashlee doing those things.
- At first it seems odd that someone with a graduate degree in business can't find better work than a waitress at a diner, until you realize that the kind of companies that typically hire people with business degrees are also the kind of companies who wouldn't want to be associated with the family of a convincted embezzler.
- Les Yay: The two girls.
Caroline: Could you do me a favor and open the back door? |
- Max and Caroline sharing a bed.
- The whole break-up and make-up.
Caroline: Your bed is so soft. |
- Caroline asks Max to come out and see something she bought:
Max: If I'm coming out for anyone, it'd be that hot dragon tattoo chick. |
- The song they dance to together in "And the Rich People Problems" is “I’m Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How to Dance with You” by the Black Kids. The chorus contains the refrain "You are the girl that I've been dreaming of ever since I was a little girl." (Emphasis added.) The whole song is told from the point of view of a woman heartbroken over the fact that the woman she's in love with is getting romantically involved with a man. So Max and Caroline were dancing--at one point grinding--to a lesbian love song. That's just barely subtext anymore.
- "You were spooning me"
- The whole show seems to be full of lesbian jokes.
- Modern Minstrelsy: Han, according to some critics. The stars and the producer were called out on this in a very uncomfortable Q&A session.
- Relationship Writing Fumble: Max and Caroline have way, WAY more sexual chemistry with each other than with any other character. Or maybe it's not a fumble.
- Will They or Won't They?: Max and Caroline again.
- The Woobie: Caroline. Thanks to her father's crime, she has lost several oppurtunities to improve her and Max's business.
