- Awesome Music: Leslie Cheung′s theme songs for the first two movies. In fact, the movies′ soundtrack by Joseph Koo counts, not to mention Peter Gabriel′s "Birdy′s Flight" from the movie Birdy, which is used to surprisingly great effect.
- Ensemble Darkhorse: Mark, oh yes. It helps that he has a much cooler appearance and attitude than both Ho and Kit.
- Iron Woobie: Ho. Over the course of the film he gets arrested, spends three years in prison, tries to distance himself from the Triad and reconcile with Kit (who resents and refuses to forgive him since Kit holds him responsible for father′s death), disgruntled upon seeing Mark being reduced to Shing′s lackey, and gets harassed by Shing.
- Sequelitis: Or in this case, Prequelitis. The third film, which was made without John Woo′s involvement, is widely considered to be the weakest installment.
- Signature Scene: Two of them, both of them involving Mark:
- His smoking with a burning counterfeit banknote in the opening.
- The restaurant shootout.
- Tear Jerker: Ho and Kit′s father dying from his wounds after fighting off the assassin.
- Kit beating up Ho upon his release.
- Kit interrogating Ho, who tries to convince his brother to no avail that he′s reformed; this leads to Mark attacking Kit and daring him to pull the trigger until Ho stops their brief scuffle.
- Mark′s No-Holds-Barred Beatdown.
- And finally, Mark′s death, getting gunned down abruptly while in the middle of berating Kit and telling him to forgive Ho.
- Too Cool to Live: Mark.
