A Tale of Love and Darkness is a 2015 indie film directed by AND starring Natalie Portman, based on Amos Oz's autobiographical novel of the same name.
After four Breather Films (basically a combination of sex, satirical fantasy and Norse mythology), Natalie Portman goes back into her serious acting chops... and it seems like she's sticking to it.
Tropes used in A Tale of Love and Darkness include:
- Darker and Edgier: Natalie Portman goes back into dramatic acting in this film after starring in two comedies back in 2011, and while a combination of humor and drama, two Marvel films involving a certain Norse god, which were basically a Lighter and Softer break for Portman. Also, this film is the most cynical of Portman's career, and, well, indie films in general due to having a very, very, very gritty and realistic color palette and subject matter.
