The manual mentions that an Evil Magician stole the Chalice, but said Evil Magician never actually appears in the actual game. Or does he? Maybe the Evil Magician shapeshifted into a bat in order to steal the Chalice, and then got trapped in bat form. Trapped in the form of a bat, he can only hinder you by stealing random objects and occasionally carrying dragons from one place to another.
