Akkan Baby is a 2001 three volume shoujo manga revolving around the adventures of two 16 year old Too Dumb to Live rock band groupies named Yuki and Shigeru. These two meet at a concert and start having a carefree Friends with Benefits relationship until some of Shigeru's more down to earth friends mention the possibility of pregnancy. After some humor based on Shigeru's inability to read a pregnancy test, she discovers she's pregnant. Hilarity Ensues.
Tropes used in Akkan Baby include:
- Door Step Baby: Yes, they find a baby, Puni, on their doorstep as well.
- Friends with Benefits: Shigeru and Yuki's relationship until romance ensues.
- Gender Blender Name: Shigeru is usually a boys name, and Yuki can be a girl's name - part of the reason that Shigeru's mom thought her always staying over with Yuki was OK.
- Good Girls Avoid Abortion: Played very straight. However, Mika plays with this as she intended to abort Puni, after her boyfriend, Shigeo, left, but was too far along
- Meet Cute: Shigeru and Yuki.
- Miss Conception: Type 2. Shigeru asks 'what's a condom?' in all seriousness. Yuki is similarly unfamiliar with birth control. At one point, they struggle to figure out how to read a pregnancy test. Their parents really didn't give them the talk.
- Nice Girl: Shigeru without a doubt. It doesn't save her from getting expelled but still.
- Papa Wolf: Yuki is very protective of both girl Shigeru and the Door Step Baby Shigeru.
- Pet the Dog: When the school principal saves Shigeru from a miscarriage.
- Reality Ensues:
- As demonstrated with Mika and Puni's subplot, teenage pregnancy isn't a fun, exciting experience. No, it's scary and frightening, especially if one is practically alone. Much of the drama related comes from this as Mika withdraws from sex, eats a lot to cope with the stress of not being able to tell her boyfriend about her pregnancy, and, eventually, like a lot of teenage mothers, tries to abandon Puni
- If teachers can't get a control over their classrooms, they'll leave, so, by the end of the manga the Principal is on her own to deal with her delinquent students.
- Teen Pregnancy: Yes, though, aside from Mika's subplot, it's not a drama-fest
- Tinkle in the Eye: The Door Step Baby manages to pee on them too.
- Who Names Their Kid "Dude"?: The name Shigeru and Yuki settle on for their son is Muni, after the onomatopoeia for his soft round cheeks.
