- In Addy's Surprise, her father is so proud that his daughter can read that he starts crying.
- In Changes for Molly, the entire reunion scene between Molly and her dad at the very end of the book. She was heartbroken when she got sick and had to miss being Miss Victory in the big show, but she was the first one to see her father when he finally came home.
- In Samantha's Surprise, Samantha is hurt and devastated when her Christmas plans are derailed by the entire household thanks to Cornelia's visit. Elsa the cranky maid snaps at her for putting up her homemade decorations, Mrs. Hawkins can't make a gingerbread house with her, and Grandmary won't let her go to a friend's party. Then when Cornelia arrives, she turns out to be loads of fun, including building a gingerbread house with Samantha...and buying a doll for her that she didn't even know Samantha had been longing for, just because she thought she'd like it! Samantha ends up giving her a special present she'd made for her uncle (and giving her uncle a pound of fancy chocolates instead).
- Kirsten finally managing to bond with her stern teacher Miss Winston in Kirsten Learns a Lesson. She'd been struggling with English and too afraid of messing up to keep trying her best, much to the teacher's frustration, but when Miss Winston shows her a ship in a bottle she finds herself telling the story of her family's journey - in English! This impresses Miss Winston, who finds just the right poem for her to read for her exam the next day.
