Neko Fukuta, nicknamed "Fune", just can't seem to get into a high school. However, her prayers are answered when the mysterious Morimori High School accepts her application. Unfortunately, when Neko applied, she didn't realize Morimori isn't a school for humans. Instead, it is a high school for magical animals to attend in order to learn how to be human and live among them disguised as such. With no other options, Neko persuades the headmaster to let her in, under one condition: she must not reveal to the others that she is human.
It is written by Moyamu Fujino and complete at seven volumes.
Tropes used in Animal Academy: Hakobune Hakusho include:
- Cain and Abel: Yusuke and Sasuke, respectively.
- Cats Are Mean: Miiko has a tendency to slap people for so much as touching her, and is highly selfish as well. Cats Are Superior also qualifies.
- Carnivore Confusion: Subverted. There are signs posted up telling students not to eat or drink their classmates.
- Cute Kitten: What motivates people to stick around Miiko despite the above.
- Curtains Match the Window: Nearly every character.
- Book Dumb: Neko.
- Evil Twin: Yusuke isn't outright evil, but he's certainly more malicious than his brother.
- Dead Big Sister: Neko assumes Ume has one, but it turns out her sister is alive and well and attending the very same school.
- Hair Decorations: Ume has a flower she wears in her hair to help her transform.
- Highly-Visible Ninja: Yusuke is part of the ninja club. Subverted in that he's a very competent ninja. Later, Neko expresses confusion when she tries to find the ninja that is in her school to observe the other students. Yusuke comes to mind, but the very fact that he is in the ninja club makes her think otherwise.
- Kitsune: Kotaro, Yuuichi and his parents, and some of the other students.
- Interspecies Romance: Comes up between humans and animals and in one case, a cat and a fox.
- Ninja: Sasuke and Yusuke.
- Shrinking Violet: Ume shows traits of this.
- Species Surname: Neko, although for her first name.
- Stranger in a Strange School: Neko, the only human in a school for magical animals.
