An earlier seiyuu which gained very substantial fame due to her role as Major Motoko Kusanagi, the anime ur-Action Girl, as well as her impersonation of video game icon Lara Croft. Atsuko Tanaka was well known for her cool, deep, sometimes very alluring voice, which usually landed her roles of strong, professional women. However, this can be twisted, and she did villainesses just as well. She was active in voice acting until few before her death of an unspecified illness in 2024, at age 61.
Her Western equivalent may be Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who's dubbed four of her roles to date including Motoko Kusanagi. She's also said to have been Heterosexual Life Partners with Kikuko Inoue, and her son Hikaru Tanaka is a seiyuu too (albeit he didn't reveal their relation until she passed away)
