Audioslave was an American Hard Rock Supergroup founded in 2001, and disbanded unceremoniously in 2007.
Basically it's like this: On one hand you take Rage Against the Machine, with the rap thrown away; and on the other hand you take Soundgarden's vocal works. Then you mash them together hard — that would be Audioslave. And true enough, the formation was like this:
The guys from Rage minus Zack de la Rocha:
- Tom Morello (guitars)
- Tim Commerford (bass)
- Brad Wilk (drums)
Plus the vocalist from Soundgarden:
- Chris Cornell
(This lineup was constant)
The project initially began when members from both sides found themselves without a working band, which moved the Rage trio to do a couple of auditions and finally encountered Cornell. The band's Self-Titled Album was released in 2002, essentially an amalgamation of their respective schools of sound, yet by the time the next albums, Out of Exile (2005) and Revelations (2006) were released, they haved moved on to create their own unique musical style. Differences between Cornell and Morello resulted in the band being disbanded by 2007 — Cornell then resumed his solo career (which exploded to little pieces with his 2009 album), and the Rage trio has since regrouped with their former frontman Zach de la Rocha.
Audioslave is mostly famous for introducing Morello's mad guitar effects to a rock soundscape, as opposed to Rage's rap-oriented compositions. Initially the band's direction prohibited Morello and the two other guys to compose politically-charged songs, but eventually this rule was nulled[1], most famously heralded by the band being the first American rock band to play in the Cuba's socialist soil (2005).
- Audioslave (2002)
- Out of Exile (2005)
- Revelations (2006)
- Bald of Awesome - Tom Morello
- The Band Minus the Face - Rage and Soundgarden.
- Be Yourself - The name of one of their songs. The song was possibly' the Trope Namer for the respecting trope.
To be yourself is all that you can do |
- Breakup Breakout - Soundgarden. Inverted with the Rage guys.
- Concept Video
- Control Freak - Later Cornell stated that he felt Morello was a bit too controlling.
- Dream Team
- A Bad Name For A Rock Band - People find their name ridiculous.
- When recording demos, they dubbed themselves "Civilian," which is somewhat cooler, but perhaps it sounds too much like a political band for Cornell's taste (see above).
- In the Style Of - Soundgarden songs in the style of Rage? Or the other way around? Or neither?
- The band started out as a median between the two bands, but over time started to become their own band, and a genuine band too, instead of just being a supergroup.
- Loudness War - A given, considering that Rick Rubin, a serial offender, produced their first two albums.
- Non-Appearing Title - "Cochise," "Exploder," "Hypnotize," "Bring 'Em Back Alive."
- One of Us - Tom Morello
- Piss-Take Rap - Chris Cornell's attempts to vocalise Zach De La Rocha's parts in "Killing In The Name", which he doesn't do well.
- Performance Video
- Protest Song - "Wide Awake"
- Supergroup - Of course.
- Those Two Guys - Brad and Tim.
- Three Instruments And The Truth - Rage-style, the liner notes remind the listeners that all the weird sounds came from Morello rapping his guitar.
- Three Second Silence - "Doesn't Remind Me" video.
- Title-Only Chorus - "Somedays"
- ↑ Though really, even on the first album, "Hypnotize" was an exception
