A H-game that was first released in 2000, penned and illustrated by Sei Shojo, and, a year later, turned into a well known Hentai anime. In 2002, it got a Prequel called Bible Black: Origins and two Sequels called Bible Black: New Testament and Bible Black: Only.
One of the more famous H-series in the United States, Bible Black has a decent fan following. The series also gained a level of infamy for some of the more outrageous moments and the dark and disturbing material contained within. The anime character designs were done by Yoshiten, the same man who did the character designs for a series with a similar level of infamy.
The game received sequel called Bible Black: The Infection, released in English on June 28th, 2011, which Sei wasn't involved with.
Not to be confused with the single by Heaven And Hell, the King Crimson song Starless and Bible Black, or the British sitcom Black Books.
Also, not to be confused with the grimoire The Sixth and Seventh Book of Moses aka Bible Black. Wikipedia has an article. Text
Versions of this work circulated throughout Scandinavia and Central Europe. In Sweden and Finland these books are compiled and published under the titles, "Den Svarta Bibeln" and "Musta Raamattu", respectively, both meaning "The Black Bible".
- Adaptational Badass: Combat spells are used more frequently than in the game, with Kitami in particular displays variety of techniques, compared to the game's version of her which prefers more mundane tricks such as drugs, anesthesia, and Molotov Cocktail.
- Adaptational Villainy: In the game, Ito, while short-tempered, is not particular bad; the worst she could do is to kill the player, but that's upon finding out he's responsible for her sexual humiliation in public. In Only, when she sees Kobayashi and Mikimoto bullying Nonogusa, she joins in.
- Adapted Out:
- The school bully Inoue and his two goons, as well as their leader Shinjo didn't make it pass the cut into the anime.
- Kobayashi, Mikimoto and Nonogusa of the swimming club bullies were not adapted into the first anime, though they made it to the Only Series afterwards.
- Anti-Villain: Kitami to some people due to her tragic backstory and her goal ultimately is to avoid being sent to hell for the devil's pact that she was forced to make. Those who don't feel this way tend to view her as a Complete Monster, with a precious little in the way of middle ground on this issue.
- Art Shift: Between the first game (La Noche De Walpurgis) and the second (Infection), due to the creator Sei Shojo not being involved with the latter.
- Bad Export for You: Japanese production company Milky tried this in several ways, most notoriously trying to force New Testament to be released in North America dub-only (that only lasted for one disc).
- Banned in China: Well not really but it caused a bit of a controversy when some Canadian retailers put it on open shelves next to 4Kids dubs and the like.
- Belligerent Sexual Tension: Minase and Imari to an extent
- Betty and Veronica: Imari the Betty and Saeki the Veronica (or Shiraki the Betty and Imari the Veronica)
- Black Magic: The Bible Black enables it reader to perform forbidden magic that is an opposite counterpart to the holy miracles in Christianity.
- Blondes Are Evil:
- The school nurse Kitami, who serves as the main villain.
- Saeki can ends up just as evil as Kitami in the game once she works under her.
- Also Jody Crowley from the sequel.
- Brainwashed and Crazy: Another of the important plot points with most of the characters falling victim to it at some point in both series.
- Shiraki can get it especially bad when she's under Misaki's seduction spell.
- Kitami, in particular, enjoys this in the anime. In the game, it's a mix of this and her Love Potion.
- Break the Cutie: Kitami in Origins starts out as a sweet, caring girl who went through a lot: she was sexually harassed by another schoolgirl, saw a puppy she cared for dead, gang-rapes by a group of thugs and finally found herself as a sacrifice for a cult.
- Brother-Sister Incest: Minase gropes his step-sister, Yukiko simply for not wearing a bra under a shirt and allowing her nipples to be seen poking from underneath. Due to him having a magic imbued touch that causes orgasms, this causes her to retreat to her room and masturbate furiously.
- In the game, it's more explicit; if he doesn't lend Saeki the book then refuses to work with Kitami, he has full-on sex with her due to Saeki's coercion.
- Broken Bird: Takashiro, especially in the sequel. And then she proceeds to get more broken...
- She gets it pretty bad in the first game, too.
- Ito in the games. First Minase's rather explicit choice in spells causes her to...perform some rather lewd acts in front of her entire class, then she gets put under mind control by Kitami. This role is transferred to Junko Mochida in the prequel series.
- But Thou Must!:
- Minase ends up going to the art club meeting no matter how much you try to avoid it.
- The first game has one of these. After causing Ito's lewd performance, you're given the choice whether or not to use magic again. Regardless of the player's choice, Minase decides to use it anyways.
- Caught with Your Pants Down: More like caught giving a Facial....and in front of Imari who secretly has a crush on you to top it all off.
- In the game, that's if you choose to use the love spell on Shiraki instead of Imari and are taking an evil road.
- Chickification - Imari is actually a champion martial artist in the game. This was ignored in the first anime entirely due to Inoue, his goons, and Shinjo being Adapted Out. Then again, martial arts are powerless against Kitami's black magic.
- Chuck Cunningham Syndrome: Although Minase helps her win the affections of a boy she likes, Murai is never seen or heard from for the rest of the series. Wonder how things are going with her & Asada?
- Country Matters: In the English dub
- Deal with the Devil: Kitami does this at the end of the Prequel in order to save her life.
- The major plot revolves around her trying to cheat the Devil so she can keep living. Anime-wise's canon, it works. Not so much in the game.
- Death by Sex:
- These endings in the game have this happen to the player where the titular characters have sex with the protagonist as part of a deadly revenge: Mika Ito, Miyuki Nonogusa and Hiroko Takashiro.
- In the sequel anime series, this pretty much happens for the entire first half of the series. A couple is found dismembered in a car by joggers, a green-haired student and her professor are found pinned to the wall by a security guard just moments after intercourse, Toudou and her young teacher (but still older than her) where burned alive in the middle of sex (she came Back from the Dead though) and then there's the particularly unpleasant bank scene where a woman is raped by the barrel of a shotgun and the guy wielding it gets so excited he accidentally pulls the trigger.
- Demoted to Extra: In Minase's case he is one of the main characters. His sister does not appear in the sequel either. A quick shot of a computer has a photo of Minase when the detective is investigating into the past case but Minase doesn't appear in person.
- Averted by Infection. Despite gaining a new voice actor, Minase remains the player's avatar, for good or ill.
- Minase is only seen in one headshot in the sequel anime series and not mentioned much more than that. It is apparently believed by some that he is implied to have been killed at some point by the Kitami-possessed-Imari.
- Ito, in transitioning from the game to the anime.
- Depraved Bisexual: Kitami at the start. Most of the cast when they come under Kitami's sway.
- Double Standard Rape (Female on Female): Averted twice in Origins when Nami tries to force Kitami into sex.
- Double Standard Rape (Female on Male): Shiraki, after she goes all stabby-stabby on Minase.
- I hate to bring up logic in a Hentai series discussion, but how can he have a boner while he's in the middle of bleeding out? Blood is kind of required to keep it up.
- Dude She's Like In A Coma: One of evil options in the game is visiting an unconscious Mika Ito in the nurse's office.
- It's not the visitation that's the evil choice. (In fact, you have to visit her, if you don't want a bad end later on.) But your options when you're there...
- Even the Girls Want Her: Kitami, both in the original and Prequel
- Everybody Has Lots of Sex: Actually a plot point as Kitami needs a Virgin Sacrifice but has trouble finding anyone who's still a virgin, even amongst the students.
- Evil Counterpart: Referencing yin and yang from eastern philosophy, Takashiro describes the Bible Black as the polar opposite to the Christian Bible.
- Evil Is Not a Toy: A lesson that the protagonists should have learned.
- Infection averts this, since the first scene to occur ends up with Minase screaming at the nightmare he's suffering through, clearly showing that he's learned his lesson.
- Evil Foreigner: Jody Crowley from the sequel
- Fan Service: Yes, that too. But really what else would you expect?
- Fantasy Contraception: Averted in Ending 3 - Deceivers and Ending 4 - Rika Shiraki, where after three months, Shiraki does get pregnant from getting creampied.
- Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: In the true ending of the game, Takashiro points out that as much as she sympathizes with Kitami for being chosen as the sacrifice for the ritual twelve years ago and simply wants to live, Kitami herself should've known from the beginning what the outcome would be once the contract expires, not to mention all the horrible things she had done to innocent people like Imari and Yukiko.
- Gainaxing: Lots of it.
- Good People Have Good Sex: Minase & Imari finally have this at the end of the original Bible Black. It's one of the few consensual sex scenes in the entire series.
- Gorn: Edges into this at several moments especially Shiraki raping Minase right after she stabs him.
- Grand Theft Me: Imari gets taken over by Kitami. Somewhat inverted in that a part of Imari is still in there.
- Guide Dang It: A few, which determine which ending the player will get.
- The key in surviving Ito's revenge in both Lawful and Chaos Route is to either visitor her and doing nothing at the infirmary/not visiting her at all in the former and the opposite in the latter. Not doing as stated will result in her killing Minase half-way through the story.
- While saving/not saving Nonogusa has a clearer consequence in the Lawful Route, in which not doing so would result in her taking revenge on Minase, this has the opposite effect in the Chaos Route toward the end where the player will instead be killed by Takashiro.
- The particular option to reach the only good ending will only appear if the player complete at least one of the required endings, which is not stated anywhere in the game and is unlikely to be known unless you played the game multiple times/looked up the guide.
- Gun Porn: Eheheh...well, the thing is...
- Heel Face Turn: In the anime, Minase starts working with Takashiro when his cult abducts Imari to be sacrificed.
- Hello, Nurse!: This is pretty much Kitami's role in the original series.
- Yukiko as well. Not only is she incredibly hot, but she's actually studying to be a medical practitioner.
- The game version of Saeki, when she's in her school uniform, falls under this. Not so much in the mage robes, though.
- Hermaphrodite:
- Kitami can turn her clitoris into a fully functioning penis.
- Saeki also learns this trick in Bible Black Only, gaining two.
- Imari in the follow up anime. Justified, supposedly, by her being host to Kitami's spirit.
- Heroes Want Redheads: Takashiro
- Actually subverted by the end of the first series and the "true" ending of the game: Minase wants a brunette—Imari, specifically.
- In the second series however, the possessed Imari makes a comment about how Takashiro stole Minase from her.
- Seeing as it's probably Kitami talking and not Imari, that statement makes a great deal of sense. Takashiro is responsible for Minase's Heel Face Turn.
- Actually subverted by the end of the first series and the "true" ending of the game: Minase wants a brunette—Imari, specifically.
- H-Game POV Character: Starts as Type IV.
- Horrible Judge of Character: Imari on Kitami, and to a lesser extent Minase
- Saeki is this in the game, depending on your choices.
- Horny Devils
- Hot for Student: Kitami with Minase. Takashiro with Minase (multiple times). Toudou seduces her teacher. Yukiko gets very kinky with her senior medical teacher. And if all the various orgies were counted, this list would be gigantic. In the prequal Takashiro is seen taking money from a teacher in exchange for helping him seduce two students. And the list from the games isn't any shorter..
- Hot for Teacher: Happens a lot.
- Hot Witch: Of course.
- The Immodest Orgasm: Oh so much. In a bit of TV Tropes irony, this entry was once right before The Big O in the Anime list.
- It Got Worse: Think the first series ends on a bad note? It gets worse. Much worse.
- The second game arguably falls under this.
- "It's Not Rape If You Enjoyed It": Duh! ya think?
- Again, averted in the game. Kitami's got a rather potent aphrodisiac.
- I Read It for the Articles: The game is littered with random trivia about art and literature, among other things. Occult stuff is predominant, but there's a summary of Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique among other things. And you thought you don't learn anything from porn.
- Idiot Ball: Takashiro in Origins. She and her coven decide to play Break the Haughty by forcing Kozono Nami to fall in love with some random skanky guy who wants her. OK, fine. Takashiro then decides to release her from the spell and tell her that they caused it. Also fine; revenge complete. The problem comes when Takashiro agrees to teach this woman magic. It could be justified as extreme arrogance, as Takashiro is probably feeling pretty invincible at that point. But still: you're willingly teaching your worst enemy the tools necessary to take you out. How can that possibly be a good idea? And no, this doesn't end well (more specifically Nami usurps her, blasts her against a wall and has Takashiro's friends tie her up and lock her in a broom closet.)
- Nami immediately counters this with her own idiot ball. So your ritual calls for a Virgin Sacrifice. And you've picked out a suitable virgin: Kitami, someone who's pissed you off (from Nami's perspective). But it's a few hours before the ceremony; what do you do? If you're Nami, you apparently hand her over to a group of men and have them rape her. Oh, but you tell them not to do it in the vagina. And instead of supervising the rape, to make sure they do as they're told, you leave. I'm sure nothing will happen to this virginity that will cause the ritual to fail and get you killed by your presumed sacrifice.
- Kitami naturally gets this right. Pretty much the first thing she does once she finds a suitable Virgin Sacrifice is to ensure that she remain a virgin via a chastity belt.
- For what it's worth, Kitami herself says that her being sacrificed didn't work because she was Only Mostly Dead in the game.
- In Episode 2, Minase goes back down into the basement he originally got the book from, when who should come along but Kitami? She spins a yarn about how she gave her soul to a demon and invites him to do the same. Considering all the nasty crap he's witnessed up to this point, any sane man would've dropped the book and ran like hell. But I almost forgot that this is a hentai, and we still have a couple of episodes left, so... on with the ritual sex!
- If you try this in the game, Kitami will kill you in most routes.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Minase...maybe.
- Jesus Taboo: The original anime references Jesus, for obvious reasons this was changed to "Satan" in the dub, though this might just make it worse.
- Worse than a cult of naked chicks slaughtering virgins to summon demons in the name of Jesus?
- This could actually be a case of doing the research in part of the creators. There are literally billions of demons in hell. One or two could have the same name as Jesus, and what better name to trick impressionable school students? Fridge Brilliance here.
- It is pointed out that Jesus and the spells in the name of God are a trick since all the magic in the book is black magic and therefore evil.
- Kick the Dog: Brutally used in Origins. Takashiro kills a puppy who the teenage Kitami had become quite attached to and use it in a sacrifice. Also, see Nami's Idiot Ball above.
- Love Makes You Crazy: Shiraki, folowing Minase's bewitchment, acts much more possessing and mindless than her usual composed self. While the game version of her brainwashed self is more or less Minase's virtual slave and follows him every whim, the anime version turns into a Yandere after he refuses to protect her and lets Kitami's goons abuse her.
- Love Potion: Characters are repeatedly cursed against their will into wanting and enjoying sex.
- Minase uses a spell on Shiraki to get in her pants. The implications are very much explored, and it backfires horribly once she starts asking Was It All a Lie?. In one ending she ends up pregnant with Minase's child. Shiraki doesn't ever figure it out in the game; and those who do—Ito, for example—end up under Kitami's control.
- Love Triangle: Minase is caught in one with Imari & Shiraki.
- A Man Is Not a Virgin: The series actually has its fair share of male virgins as well as female, prior to their respective sex scenes. Some examples are Hiratani from Origins and several of the guys in Saeki & friends' scenes in Only.
- Multiple Endings: Twelve in the original game.
- Kurumi Imari - The true ending in the Lawful Route, though clearing a bad ending is required to unlock.
- Evil Never Dies - Occurs at the end of Chaos Route if Minase tries to seduce Imari early on. Sympathic towards Imari's secret crush on him, Minase sabotages Kitami's ritual at the last minute to save her.
- Deceiver - The successful end of Chaos Route by Minase helping Kitami switch bodies with Imari.
- Rika Shiraki - Occurs on the Lawful Route if Minase seduces Shiraki; Minase fails to escape from Saeki's apartment due to the unexpected arrival of the brainwashed Imari and gets taken as sex slave alongside Takashiro and later Shiraki.
- Reika Kitami - Happens upon choosing the Lawful Route, with Kitami killing Minase with an aphrodisiac if he stands firm instead of running away.
- Mika Ito - Happens in the Lawful Route if Minase accidentally outs himself in front of her early on. Death is not enough to satisfy her vengeance, so Ito kills him in a sexually humiliating manner.
- White Room - Happens in the Lawful Route when stopping Kitami from possessing Imari fails. With Takashiro killed in the process, Minase tries to avenge her and Imari, only to fail and end up institutionalized.
- On the Road - A variation of Mika Ito on Chaos Route, where she ambushes and kills Minase on the road with a knife instead. Had Minase outed himself early on, Kitami would have seduced her away from killing her servant.
- Art Room - Occurs in Lawful Route.
- Miyuki Nonogusa - Occurs on the Lawful Route if Minase took advantage of Nonogusa's situation, so she returns the favor.
- Knife - Could happen in the Lawful Route when Minase confronts Kitami to take back the Bible Black she stole. If he chooses to knife her, her black magic causes him to turn the knife back at him.
- Hiroko Takashiro - Take place in Chaos Route, where Takashiro kills Minase with an aphrodisiac for selling his soul to the devil and successfully escapes with Imari before the ritual could be carried out. Avoidable if Minase restricts having sex in the Art Room prior.
- Naughty Tentacles: The demons have these.
- No Sell: In the game, Minase is given the option to magically seduce Imari instead of Shiraki only to find out the very next day that the spell doesn't work on his childhood friend as she is already harboring a feeling for him.
- Of Corsets Sexy:
- Kitami wears an impressively short minidress beneath her lab coat.
- Saeki in New Testament.
- Only Six Faces:
- The girls are not only limited to a single face, they all have the same body figure, and CGs featuring more of them will clearly show that they all have the same heights. It's like they are all clones with different hair and accessories.
- The anime series mostly attempts to avert this, as the character designer seems to have done their best at making the women as distinguishable as possible from one another. Character models show that, at least for the named characters, they attempted giving each male and female different figures and body types, and all of them are different heights. This is not completely averted however, as certain characters do look quite a bit alike and un-named background characters are sometimes identical to others.
- Pigeonholed Voice Actor:
- Plot With Porn: More like porn with plot, considering how much Backstory is involved.
- The game manages to give you porn and plot at the same time, simply because Kitami enjoys explaining things during sex.
- Pragmatic Adaptation: The anime blended events from both Chaos and Lawful Route together in order to maximize the amount of sex scenes and Fanservice with some of the events from the game being cut to accommodate.
- Post Script Season: Everything post the original 6 episode series is this, as all of the main parts of the orignal game were already adapted.
- Psycho Lesbian: Nami Kozono from the Prequel who relentlessly sexually harasses the young Kitami. When Kitami finally lashes out and says no, she has her goons gang-raped her and uses her as a sacrifice to the devil.
- Rape as Backstory: Kitami. In fact this is the reason why the entire main series came to be.
- Takashiro as well. And hers might actually be considered worse considering she gets raped by a demon. Both however, had it pretty bad as both were virgins at the time.
- Rape Is Love: Mostly averted in the game. Saeki and her lot are the only ones to play this straight. There's an aphrodisiac used in every other case. Also, it's pretty clear in the film that a lot of it is non consensual.
- Schoolgirl Lesbians: Kozono Nami, The villain in the Prequel is one of these.
- She Is Not My Girlfriend: Minase tries desperately to convince Shiraki this in episode 2. Shiraki, meet edge of rooftop!
- The Smurfette Principle: Inverted here. Minase seems to be the only significant male character in the entire series.
- Spit Trail Kiss: If Minase chooses to work with Kitami, her pact with him starts with such a passionate kiss.
- Start of Darkness: Origins, for Kitami.
- STD Immunity
- Student Council President: Shiraki from the original, Nami from the Prequel, and Kiriya from the Sequel.
- The Atoner: Takashiro to an extent; she wishes to atone for unleashing the dark forces years ago.
- The Ingenue: Kitami in the Prequel and to a lesser extent, Imari in the original
- The Merch: There are Bible Black sex toys available at J-list
- Tome of Eldritch Lore: The titular bible.
- Tsundere: Imari is a excellent Type B example, complete with side ponytail and Zettai Ryouiki.
- Villain Protagonist: Takashiro was this at her very worst when she actually concieved the human sacrifice scheme
- Virgin Sacrifice: The other key plot point.
- Yandere: Shiraki's cute when she's "confessing" her love to Minase, but midway through she goes all ape-shit.
- Zettai Ryouiki: Pretty much every female has the grade A type of this.
