  • Before making a single edit, Tropedia EXPECTS our site policy and manual of style to be followed. Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so. Our policies can be reviewed here.
  • All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation.
  • All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Is David a Well-Intentioned Extremist who only shoots the dog for the sake of humanity? Or is he an unrepentant Knight Templar fantastic racist who only kills Chiropterans for the sake of revenge?
  • Crowning Music of Awesome: "Diva".
    • Saya's Victory, rightfully placed amongst the Greatest Battle Music Of All Times.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: People have a bad habit of giving Diva a lot more sympathy than she deserves, even if she has admittedly suffered enough to be considered The Woobie. There are people who even excuse her rape and murder of Riku and claim she was just playing with him!
  • Evil Is Sexy: Diva again!
  • Growing the Beard: When Saya grows her hair out. Possibly not the most accurate timing as that is subjective but things did seem to get more interesting around the time she was reintroduced with her hairstyle changed.
  • Ho Yay: Nathan and James, Moses and Karman, and Karl and Solomon in the anime, Riku and Charles and Kai and Joel in the manga, and Hagi and Nishi in the prequel manga.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Diva crosses it when she rapes Riku so that she can bear his child, and then kills him.
    • Amshel isn't much better, especially after learning he has a HUGE part on Diva becoming the monster that she is in the series.
  • The Woobie: Many, many characters, including several villains. It would actually be much quicker to list the characters who aren't Woobies, and you can do so on one hand.
    • Saya is probably at the top. Here's the rundown for what she goes through over the series; her adopted father gets mutated, forcing her to euthanize him to prevent him from turning into a Chripoteran and she is pulled into a battle she is in no way ready for against blood-sucking monsters. Then she discovers that the entire events of the series began when she, as a random and foolish act of kindness, released her Evil Twin Diva upon the world. Then she learns what she did in Vietnam and that, in some ways, she's Not So Different from Diva. Then, her little brother, Riku, who was turned into her chevalier not long before, gets raped and killed by Diva, finally pushing her off the Despair Event Horizon and turning her into a Death Seeker, with her wishing to end her life as soon as she kills Diva. It takes a lecture from Kai and a long-overdue (to put it very mildly) Love Confession from Hagi to snap her out of it. THEN, when it looks like her life is finally about to get happier, Amshel comes along and forces Hagi to stay behind and finish him off while Saya, Kai and Diva's children flee the collapsing building, which supposedly kills him. Thankfully, at the very end, it is shown that Hagi survived, and is waiting for Saya to wake up from her 30-year slumber, suggesting that the universe has decided to finally give the poor girl a break.
    • Hagi is a mixture of Stoic Woobie and Iron Woobie. He was sold to Amshel and Joel I for a loaf of bread, fell of a cliff, experienced the immensely painful process of Chevalier transformation, waits every three decades for Saya to wake up and what do they do after that? Fight off Chiropterans. He has been physically abused by pretty much every opponent he's ever faced. He's been through it all: Impaled, crushed beneath rubble, almost died of blood loss  when he was still human, took a blast of condensed energy, lost at least two appendages. Even all that abuse is nothing compared to the immense psychological trauma he's carried over for an entire century. Said trauma scarred him so much that he barely speaks. And yet, In spite of all this, he states in his fight with Amshel that he has no regrets whatsoever, just because he was able to meet Saya.
    • Iron Woobie: David. He has been through so much during his time as a soldier (he has the scars to prove it), but he never once complains and the only time his Dark and Troubled Past is ever brought up is when Lewis explains it to Kai.
    • Jerkass Woobie: Kai could be considered this in the beginning of the series; he's a bit of an Emo Teen but you can't really blame him considering he has deal with the death of his father and stress over taking care of his two siblings (though it's ultimately Saya who takes care of him). By the final quarter of the series, however, he's become more of an Iron Woobie thanks to Character Development.
      • Also, Diva. Yes, she's the Big Bad of the series. Yes, she raped and killed Riku and, YES, she tried to turn all humans into Chiropterans, but when you learn of all the traumatic abuse Amshel Goldsmith put her through and that all she ever wanted was a family (twisted as said desire was by how the girls' conception was, some can't help but feel a little sorry for her.
    • Woobie Species: The Schiff. They were created as nothing more than experiments, their creator James refuses to acknowledge them as living beings and they're slowly dying from a disease for which there is only one cure (Diva's blood). Oh, and only Lulu survives.
