The cast of Bungou Stray Dogs.

The Armed Detective Agency[]

A private detective agency consisting entirely of people with supernatural powers. Though not officially a government organization, the agency is still called in whenever the police or military are unable to deal with a supernatural threat.

  • Anti-Hero: Many of the Agency's employees can move into morally dark territory at times. Even the nicest members won't hesitate to kill anyone who poses a threat in cold blood.
  • Dysfunction Junction: Pretty much everyone in the Agency is some flavor of dysfunctional. The only ones who seem genuinely well-adjusted are Fukuzawa and Kenji.

Atsushi Nakajima[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Yūto Uemura (Japanese), Max Mittelman (English)

Cquote2

The main protagonist of the series, Atsushi is an orphan with severely low self-esteem issues and the ability of "Beast Beneath the Moonlight", which allows him to transform into a monstrously strong tiger able to regenerate from damage. Unfortunately, he has little control over his ability, and he was recruited into the agency after inadvertently wreaking havoc while transformed.

  • Adorkable: He's both extremely polite and very easily flustered. Not to mention being a massive Woobie.
  • Ambiguous Disorder: Atsushi demonstrates a lot of symptoms of PTSD and depression, but no diagnosis is outright stated.
  • The Atoner: Deconstructed. Atsushi doesn't actually have anything to atone for, but his abusive childhood has drilled it into his head that he's a Doom Magnet to the point he's genuinely started to believe it, and he's willing to even outright die if it means making up for the alleged misery he causes.
  • Audience Surrogate: As both the Naive Newcomer and the Only Sane Man, Atsushi's general curiosity about how the Agency operates and his utter confusion at his coworkers' antics neatly reflect the audience's feelings.
  • Bad Powers, Good People: Atsushi is an absolute sweetheart, but he has very little control over his tiger form and actually started off as a target of the Agency because of the havoc he caused while transformed. Of course, the worst he ever did was cause property damage and kill livestock, and it's subtly implied that the lack of control is caused by his immense self-loathing.
  • Beware the Nice Ones: Atsushi is one of the nicest guys you could meet; he's humble, kind, compassionate, and earnest. However, his tiger form is immensely strong and it's made explicit that Atsushi could kill a man with ease if he ever wished too while transformed. Fortunately for all involved, he's not interested in wanton slaughter, which of course does not mean he'll go easy on his opponents if he can't reason with them.
  • Butt Monkey: He's occasionally subject to humiliation for comedic effect. And, on a more dramatic note, he's very prone to receiving brutal physical injuries, though he's able to regenerate from them rather quickly.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: He was severely abused throughout his childhood by the orphanage staff, and eventually kicked out onto the streets when his tiger form became difficult to manage, though they never told him about his ability likely out of fear he would retaliate. Thus, he spent two weeks prior to the story homeless and starving, and deeply paranoid that the tiger that had ruined his life even further was hunting him down.
  • Deadpan Snarker: Downplayed. He's too nice to be openly snarky, but he does have his moments of it, generally when he's at his wit's end.
  • Death Seeker: Downplayed. He's not as open about it as Dazai and he seems unaware of it, but Atsushi comes off as passively suicidal at times and he's very willing to put his life at risk because he feels it's the only way to atone for being a Doom Magnet.
  • Doom Magnet: He's convinced that his sheer presence causes misery for everyone around him, and a lot of his heroism is his attempt to atone for his "sins". Much of this comes from his time at the orphanage, where the cruel headmaster and staff taught him from day one that he was worthless and nothing but a drain on society.
  • Dork Knight: He's capable of taking on extremely tough opponents and has escaped form certain doom through sheer willpower, but above all Atsushi is an absolute dork.
  • Fatal Flaw: Dazai and Akutagawa both call Atsushi out for wallowing in self-pity and feeling sorry for himself and thus being too passive to act in situations where he actually can make a difference. Part of Atsushi's character growth is letting go of his Dark And Troubled Past and becoming his own person.
  • Good Thing You Can Heal: As the weretiger, Atsushi has extraordinary regenerative capabilities, which is good because he is constantly getting beaten, sliced and attacked and having his leg cut off happens so often its almost a Running Gag.
  • Nice Guy: He's polite, compassionate, rarely has a bad word for anyone, and is an all-around sweetheart in general.
  • Not So Above It All: He's generally the Only Sane Man, but he's quick to join in on his coworkers' hijinx whenever money is involved. He's also rather gullible and can be rather easily suckered, and as Dazai notes, he's just as reckless with his life as the rest of the agents in spite of his protests to the contrary.
  • Oblivious To Love: He fails to understand that Lucy has a crush on him and being a Tsundere, she can't bring herself to spell it out.
  • Only Sane Man: He's one of the few even semi-normal members of the Agency, and he spends a lot of time being understandably confused by a lot of their quirks and more… out-there antics. Not that he doesn't have issues of his own, but he's definitely more grounded than everyone else.
  • Power Incontinence: He was unable to stop himself transforming into his Weretiger form, nor did he have any memory of doing so until he was taken in by the Agency and Fukuzawa's power allows Atsushi to control his ability.
  • Refused the Call: He initially refuses to join the Agency, because as he notes it's extremely dangerous work and he'd much rather take a minimum wage job. Dazai eventually gets him to join by pointing out that, since he has no viable skill sets or any friends or family to vouch for him as well as having been a wanted fugitive, it's highly unlikely that he'd be able to find another job and that the Agency really is his best option.
  • Self-Deprecation: Atsushi struggles with deep self-loathing, and he's often prone to putting himself at risk whenever he feels he's screwed up regardless of whether it's true or not.

Osamu Dazai[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Mamoru Miyano (Japanese), Kaji Tang (English)

Cquote2

Atsushi's very Eccentric Mentor and a former member of the Port Mafia who is obsessed with committing suicide - preferably with a beautiful woman by his side. He has the ability "No Longer Human", which allows him to nullify the powers of the people around him.

  • Ambiguous Disorder: There's definitely something wrong with Dazai. He's openly suicidal and even treats it as rather romantic, he has a disregard for human life, and he's seemingly unable to resist messing with people even when it's in his best interest not to.
  • Anti-Hero: Dazai's on the side of the law, but he's willing to use morally dubious tactics to get what he wants and he's not afraid to let innocent people die if it nets him what he wants.
  • Beneath The Mask: Despite Dazai's outgoing and teasing personality, he often disappears off alone and when he is by himself he's much more solemn and withdrawn and it's implied his extroverted attitude is an act he puts on at the Agency for the benefit of pushing his coworkers into doing their best.
  • Beware the Silly Ones: Dazai's a complete goofball, but he's a Sociopathic Hero who won't hesitate to let you die if it serves his goals.
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: Dazai is a Cloudcuckoolander who loves nothing more than to Troll people, especially Kunikida, but he's very good at his job and a legitimately skilled detective. It is deconstructed to a degree, as much of his quirks are a sign of something deeply wrong with him and he doesn't seem to ascribe to normal morality.
  • Chivalrous Pervert: He's always flirting with women, but nothing less than a gentleman about it. His success rate is not helped by the fact his number-one way of hitting one workmen is to offer to commit a double suicide with them, but that's Dazai for you.
  • Cloudcuckoolander: Dazai is, to put it simply, utterly bizarre, even disregarding his obsession with committing suicide.
  • Cursed With Awesome: His ability comes in very handy when fighting other people with gifts, since he can simply negate them to even the playing field, but when Dazai gets seriously injured, he's one of the very few people Yosano can't heal because he automatically negates her powers if she touches him. Fyodor takes advantage of this by having Dazai shot (but not killed) so he can continue turning the Agency and Port Mafia against each other while he's incapacitated.
  • Death Seeker: He's always seeking out new ways to commit suicide, which range from comically ineffective to downright absurd. It's ambiguous whether he's actually suicidal or just treating it as a hobby, especially since he eventually starts trying to use it as a way to hit on women by offering to commit a "double suicide" with them.
  • The Gadfly: Dazai takes great delight in toying with people, Kunikida, Atsushi and Chuuya being his favorite targets.
  • Get A Hold Of Yourself Man!: When Atsushi undergoes a Heroic BSOD over hurting Naomi and Kirako when under influence of Q's ability, Dazai slaps him in the face and tells him to stop pitying himself as it only leads to ruin.
  • Kick The Dog: Every time he interacts with Akutagawa, he seems to go out of his way to insult him, including telling him that Atsushi is a superior protégé to him in every way. Akutagawa responds by punching him in the face.
  • OOC Is Serious Business: When Dazai stops joking around and gets serious, you know the situation has gotten bad.
    • Dazai is normally very confident in his plans and isn't known for relying on others. When Odasaku is dying in his arms, Dazai can only beg him to tell him what he should do. Odasaku tells Dazai that if good and evil don't mean anything to him, he should be someone who protects others.
  • Reformed Criminal: He was a member of the Port Mafia before joining the Agency, which none of his coworkers are aware of.
  • Sociopathic Hero: He's on the side of the law, but Dazai is downright ruthless in how he sees justice done. He's more than willing to put his coworkers or civilians at risk for the sake of his plans, and he'll even let innocent people die if it'll help take down a bad guy. As he tells Kunikida, he views idealism as a road to fanaticism, and he'd much rather see justice done with as little moral qualms as possible.
  • Tall, Dark and Handsome: Dazai is repeatedly mentioned to be very good-looking, to the point that when trying to guess his previous job, one of Atsushi's guesses is a model. Dazai tells him that while that's incorrect, he's very flattered.
  • Trademark Favourite Food: He loves crab, we see empty tins of canned crab littering his apartment.

Doppo Kunikida[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Yoshima Hosoya (Japanese), Patrick Seitz (English)

Cquote2

Dazai's partner and his opposite in every way. Whereas Dazai is a Cloudcuckoolander and a massive Troll who enjoys messing with people, Kunikida is an aggressively strait-laced man who would very much prefer to keep things nice and orderly and lives by an insanely detailed schedule he keeps in his notebook, which contains his entire life plan. Kunikida's notebook Carrie’s another purpose as well; his ability, "Doppo's Poetry", allows him to create anything he writes down in his notebook so long as it's roughly the same size and he understands the object's function.

  • Badass Baritone: Both his Japanese and English voice actors give him a deep voice, and he's definitely a badass.
  • Big Good: While Fukuzawa is the leader of the Agency, Kunikida keeps it running day-to-day by handling finances, scheduling, and his various coworkers' eccentricities. Ranpo lays it out to Kunikida that this is precisely why Fyodor chose to try and break him first.
  • The Comically Serious: Downplayed. Dazai's antics can get him to lose it quite easily, but he reacts to pretty much everything else with an air of calm resignation.
  • Control Freak: Kunikida lives his life by his highly detailed schedule he keeps in his notebook, so he tends to lose it whenever it's messed with. So of course, Dazai does it all the time.
  • Deadpan Snarker: His go-to way of coping with how utterly bizarre his coworkers can get, especially Dazai.
  • Fights Like a Normal: Kunikida's power doesn't lend itself to combat situations, so he relies more on practical weapons and his own martial arts skills in a fight.
  • Hair-Trigger Temper: It's very easy to set Kunikida off into screaming fits by messing with his notebook, which is why Dazai does it all the time.
  • Heroic BSOD: When the unnamed little girl blows herself up right in front of him on Fyodor's orders, Kunikida is almost catatonic afterwards until Ranpo snaps him out of it.
  • It's All My Fault: Generally speaking, Kunikida tends to heap guilt onto himself, especially when innocent people die in a case he's involved with.
  • Jerk with a Heart of Gold: He's grumpy and stern at the best of times and not very tolerant of his coworkers or any disruptions to his schedule, but he's idealistic and moral to a fault and will do anything he can to protect innocent people.
  • Knight in Sour Armor: He's grumpy and comes off as rather cynical, but in reality he's deeply idealistic. As he himself puts it, he's an idealist at his core; he's just pragmatic so he can live up to those ideals as best he can.
  • Last Name Basis: Nobody calls him by his first name, everyone refers to him as Kunikida.
  • Only Sane Man: He generally tends to play this role; he's pretty much the only member of the Agency to try and out a stop to his coworkers zany and often counter-productive antics, and he's constantly having to try to stop Dazai from derailing investigations or business meetings with his various quirks and inept suicide attempts.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: Subverted with Dazai. The two work well together and have mutual respect, but Kunikida despises Dazai on a personal level and Dazai takes special joy in trolling him.
  • Younger Than He Looks: Given his deep voice, height and fussy, no-nonsense personality, it can be hard to believe that Kunikida is only twenty-two, four years younger than Ranpo.

Yukichi Fukuzawa[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Rikiya Koyama (Japanese), Jamieson Price (English)

Cquote2

The stoic, unflappable, and highly respected head of the agency. His ability, "All Men are Equal", allows him to suppress the abilities of his subordinates; as well, Fukuzawa is a world-class martial artist able to take out his opponents without even breaking a sweat.

  • Asskicking Equals Authority
  • Big Good: Of the Armed Detective Agency and as the series as a whole, as he's responsible for finding a home for several of the orphaned characters (Ranpo, Yosano, Dazai, Atsushi, Kyoka) and he's the reason Mori isn't running all of Yokohama with the Port Mafia.
  • Parental Substitute: He met Ranpo when the latter was an orphaned fourteen-year-old and, after a rocky beginning, ended up all but adopting him.
  • Silver Fox: His age has done nothing to diminish his looks.
  • The Stoic: He meets anything, from his employees' antics to being attacked by a gang of assassins with the same calm demeanor.

Ranpo Edogawa[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Hiroshi Kamiya (Japanese), Vic Mignona (Seasons 1-2), Landon McDonald (Season 3) (English)

Cquote2

An intelligent member of the agency highly respected for his incredible abilities of deduction, in spite of his rather childish attitude. Ranpo possesses the ability "Ultra Deduction", which allows him to immediately solve criminal investigations within seconds; at least, that's what Ran0o thinks. In reality, he has no ability; he's simply that skilled of a detective.

  • Ambiguous Disorder: Ranpo is a brilliant detective who can solve a crime simply by looking at the crime scene for a few seconds, but he's deeply childish and naive about everything outside of that, to the point he doesn't even know how to buy a train ticket. Atsushi initially suspects that it's a side effect of his ability, only to learn that Ranpo doesn't have one; he's just like this.
  • Badass Normal: The reason everyone respects him is because, unbeknownst to everyone but Ranpo, he has no special ability. His near-instant deductions and hyper-competence is all his own natural skill, and Kunikida notes that his frequent consulting with the police is a large part of what keeps the Agency afloat.
  • Bunny Ears Lawyer: He's so childish that Atsushi is genuinely surprised to learn he's actually twenty-six and he's very egotistical, but he's a genius-level detective who is amazingly good at his job in spite of the fact he doesn't have an ability.
  • Character Development: Ranpo starts out the series being reluctant to get involved with matters that don't immediately pertain to himself or the Agency and he has to be ordered into helping them find Atsushi when he's kidnapped by the Port Mafia. After Fukuzawa is incapacitated by Fyodor using Pushkin's ability, Ranpo takes it very hard and dedicates himself to finding a way to cure Fukuzawa before the Port Mafia show up to kill him to save Mori. After this Ranpo works as Mission Control for the agency and in general becomes much more proactive about protecting his friends.
  • Eyes Always Shut: He does open them every now and then, usually when he gets serious.
  • First Name Basis: He's the only one in the Agency who calls Yosano by her first name. Similarly, nobody calls him 'Edogawa'.
  • Man Child: He acts like a bratty, naive child, but he's actually in his mid twenties.
  • Sweet Tooth: Ranpo is always eating sweets and can be bribed into doing work with candy. He also never gets fat because he uses all that sugar to power that big brain of his.
  • Weak, But Skilled: Chuuya is reluctant to fight Ranpo since he doesn't look very strong, but Ranpo effortlessly defeats Chuuya by tricking him into attacking and absorbing him into one of Poe's novels.
  • World's Strongest Man: Ranpo is undisputedly the most intelligent character in the show, even above Dazai, and the Agency treat him with deference because of it and Ranpo considers it his duty to protect "the world's idiots" because of his vast intelligence. Notably the one time Ranpo makes a mistake (trusting Fukuchi because he's an old friend of Fukuzawa's), everything goes to hell for the Agency.

Akiko Yosano[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Yu Shimamura (Japanese), Erica Lindbeck (English)

Cquote2

The Agency's medic, well-known both for her competence and the fact that she is absolutely terrifying. Her ability, "Thou Shalt Not Die" allows her to heal anyone with a life-threatening injury; unfortunately, this means that in order to heal anyone coming under her care, she needs to inflict one on them in order to heal them if they aren't that severely injured already. Suffice it to say, most members of the Agency do their best to avoid being injured lest they end up in her care.

  • Action Girl: She can kick ass with the best of them, and even without her ability she's extremely dangerous in a fight.
  • All-Loving Hero: As a doctor, Akiko has a natural respect for all life and absolutely despises murderers for taking it away so casually.
  • Anti-Hero: She's a creepy Nightmare Fetishist who will severely injure her own patients for the sake of healing them and is disturbingly eager to get an opportunity to operate on someone. She's undoubtedly on the side of good, but damn if she isn't absolutely terrifying about it.
  • Chainsaw Good: Her preferred method of operating on her patients is to introduce them to the business end of a chainsaw.
  • Dark And Troubled Past: When Yosano was only eleven, Mori took her with him to the frontlines when fighting in a war forcing them to use soldiers instead of machinery. Yosano was forced to healing the injured soldiers over and over again to send them right back to the front. Unfortunately, she could heal their physical injuries but not the mental trauma that went with it, and because of her, the troops couldn't surrender because Yosano kept healing them. The soldiers eventually turned against her (one even trying to kill her) and blaming her for their anguish. When one soldier she'd grown especially close to hung himself rather than be resurrected and get hurt over and over, Yosano snapped and became a Broken Shell up until Fukuzawa and Ranpo showed up and offered her refuge working for the Agency.
  • Deadly Doctor: Subverted. She doesn't kill her patients and is fully dedicated to healing them, but her ability requires they be injured to the point of near death so that she can heal them. And she is absolutely not shy about doing so.
  • Healing Factor: She can cause both herself and her patients to heal perfectly from,for-threatening injuries, and life-threatening injuries alone. This has the unfortunate side effect of needing to injure her patients to the point of near death in order to heal them, which she will happily do, often via chainsaw.
  • Nightmare Fetishist: She is disturbingly eager to operate on her patients, which in her case requires that she injure them to the point of near death in order to heal them.

Kenji Miyazawa[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Hiroyuki Kagura (Japanese), Lucien Dodge (English)

Cquote2

A relentlessly chipper and friendly country mouse whose ability, "Undefeated by the Rain", gives him super strength when he's hungry.

Junichirou Tanizaki[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Toshiyuki Toyonaga (Japanese), Spike Spencer (English)

Cquote2

A friendly if somewhat awkward member of the Agency who, much like Atsushi, is a rookie still learning the ropes and is constantly in the company of his little sister Naomi. He possesses the ability "Light Snow", projects highly realistic illusions albeit within a small area; atoll, his ability is highly useful and makes him a dangerous combatant, especially since he can use his illusions to physically harm his opponents.

  • Beware the Nice Ones: He's a friendly, awkward guy who's fairly unassuming, but he's a very dangerous combatant and he won't hesitate to murder you if you hurt his sister.
  • Big Brother Instinct: If you hurt his sister, he will kill you. No exceptions.
  • Death Glare: He has such a potent one he terrified several experienced Port Mafia members, while tied up, all because they threatened Naomi.
  • Master of Illusion: His ability "Light Snow" allows him to create illusions that resemble a green screen when broken. While it doesn't sound threatening, Junichirou uses it to infiltrate the Port Mafia and comes extremely close to killing Mori, only being stopped because Kouyo intervened with her ability.
  • Nice Guy: He's an absolute sweetheart and one of the most friendly and approachable members of the Agency. His Establishing Character Moment is apologizing profusely to Atsushi for having pretended to be a Mad Bomber during his Secret Test of Character.

Kyouka Izumi[]

{{quote|Voiced by: Sumire Morohoshi (Japanese), Cherami Leigh (English)

A young orphan who was forced to operate as an assassin for the Port Mafia before being rescued by Atsushi. Kyouka has the ability "Demon Snow", which allows her to summon an unstoppable and highly lethal phantom swordsman to attack her opponents. Unfortunately, she has little control over this ability, and it can only be activated or controlled by instructions over a cell phone.

  • Badass Adorable: She's a cute, unassuming little girl who can easily murder you without even lifting a finger. Fortunately, she really wants to avoid killing if she can help it, though she's more than willing to throw down if you threaten her friends.
  • Empty Shell: Subverted. Throughout her first appearance, she blandly recites her name and her kill count, making her come off as nothing but an empty shell who simply follows orders. However, when it's revealed Akutagawa is trying to use her as a suicide bomber to blow up a train full of innocent people, she admits she's just sick of killing people and by this point just wants to die, and she attempts a Heroic Sacrifice by jumping out of the train. Fortunately, Atsushi safes her life.

Naomi Tanizaki[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Chiaki Omigawa (Japanese), Erica Lindbeck (English)

Cquote2

Junichirou's sister, a schoolgirl who works part-time as a clerk in the office. Seeing as how unlike the rest of the office she doesn't have an ability, she spends most of her time out of the field.

  • Big Brother Attraction: She has a massive crush on her big brother, and makes this very clear to anyone in the general vicinity regardless of how squicked out they get. Even Junichirou himself is blatantly uncomfortable with it. Possibly subverted as it has been implied that Naomi and Junichirou aren't actually related - they don't share any physical features, for a start.
  • No Sense of Personal Space: When it comes to Junichirou anyway, much to his horror.
  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She's the assertive Red to Kirako's more passive Blue.
  • Taking the Bullet: To save Junichirou, she throws herself in front of him when Higuchi tries to gun him down.

Kirako Haruno[]

{{quote|Voiced by: Mina (Japanese), Abby Trott (English)

Another office clerk who spends most of her time helping Fukuzawa and Kunikida with paperwork. She doesn't have an ability and never goes into the field, though she's always entirely unfazed when an emergency occurs at the office, if only because she's Seen It All.

  • Red Oni, Blue Oni: She's the meek Blue to Naomi's more confident Red.
  • Unfazed Everyman: She's an ordinary woman by all accounts and has no powers of her own, yet she's totally unfazed by her coworkers' antics and the occasional Port Mafia invasion.

Port Mafia[]

A local criminal organization that controls the Yokohama ports. The organization has a hand in most of the criminal activity around Tokyo, and has an ongoing rivalry with the Armed Detective Agency since the two tend to come into conflict.

Ryuunosuke Akutagawa[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Kensho Ono (Japanese), Brian Beacock (English)

Cquote2

A feared enforcer for the Port Mafia who has the ability "Rashomon", which allows him to turn his coat into a vicious living shadow that can rip apart anything, including space itself. His ability and the many murders he's committed have made him legendary amongst the underworld, and he's one of the only members of the Port Mafia that the Agency truly fears.

  • Ax Crazy: His solution to everything is to murder absolutely anyone in his way.
  • Dark And Troubled Past: Akutagawa grew up in the slums with his little sister where they had to fight every day just to get food and shelter, to the point Akutagawa was a Empty Shell. He then met Dazai, who promised to give him a reason to live and took him on as his protégé, but Dazai's methods included beating the shit out of Akutagawa whenever Akutagawa failed to live up to Dazai's expectations or disobeyed a command. Then Dazai quit the Port Mafia without a word to anyone, leaving Akutagawa feeling abandoned and betrayed as a result.
  • The Dreaded: Everyone is absolutely terrified of Akutagawa, and for good reason. Even Kunikida, who otherwise tends to regard the Port Mafia as an annoyance at best, is scared of him and he bluntly tells Atsushi that directly engaging him in a fight is suicide. The only one who is able to take him on in a remotely fair fight is a transformed Atsushi, and that's only because of his Healing Factor.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Atsushi very quickly becomes one of Akutagawa's very personal enemies because Akutagawa is enraged that Dazai respects Atsushi as a subordinates and acknowledges his strength without Atsushi even trying to earn it.
  • Hates Baths: Akutagawa hates bathing because without any clothes he can't use his ability, leaving him vulnerable. In a Drama CD, Chuuya has to order him to take a bath.
  • The Red Baron: He's known as the "Black Dog" of the Port Mafia.
  • The Social Darwinist: He believes that the world is separated into two categories: the strong, who can take whatever they want, and the weak, who are failures who deserve to die.
  • Your Days Are Numbered: It is heavily implied that Akutagawa does not have long to live owing to his sickly health.

Ichiyou Higuchi[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Asami Seto (Japanese), Carrie Keranen (English)

Cquote2

Akutagawa's ever-loyal right-hand woman. She doesn't actually have an ability, but more than makes up for it with firepower and a distinct lack of fear for the Agency.

  • Devoted To You: No matter how much Akutagawa mistreats or ignores Higuchi, she continues serving loyally under him anyway. To be fair, Akutagawa doesn't really know how to have healthy, positive relationships with people so the fact he did apologise to Higuchi for his behavior towards her is pretty huge.
  • Dual-Wielding: Sub-machine guns, of all things.
  • Only Sane Man: She's easily one of the most normal, level-headed members of the Port Mafia, except when it comes to her fangirling over Akutagawa.

Motojirou Kaji[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Wataru Hatano (Japanese), Brian Palermo (English)

Cquote2

A deeply unhinged terrorist bomber obsessed with death who uses lemon-shaped bombs as his primary weapon. Kaji has the ability "Lemon Death", which protects him from damage from his own bombs.

  • Ax Crazy: He treats death like a game, and murders people for the sheer fun of it.
  • Mad Bomber: He's very fond of blowing things up, and he's an expert bomb-maker who uses them as his primary weapon in combat.
  • Weaksauce Weakness: His ability protects him from the explosions of his own bombs, and nothing else. If he didn't make the bomb, he's essentially screwed, and since he uses his Bo,bs as his primary weapon it's his only advantage in a combat situation. The second he's run out of bombs and is forced to rely on other weapons, he's pretty much already lost.

Ryuuro Hirotsu[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Atsushi Ono (Japanese), Greg Chun (English)

Cquote2

The sharply dressed leader of the Black Lizards, the Port Mafia's notorious hit squad. He has the ability "Flying Camelia", which allows him to send objects flying with a powerful force.

  • Affably Evil: He's polite, cultured, and erudite, but he's a ruthless hitman with no compunctions about doing his job.

Gin Akutagawa[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Shiina Natsukawa (Japanese), Allegra Clark (English)

Cquote2

An ever silent member of the Black Lizards.

  • Samus Is A Girl: Higuchi was in utter shock when Dazai reveals that Gin is a girl and has a very cute-sounding voice on top of that.
  • Ship Tease: It's strongly implied she and Tachihara have feelings for each other.
  • The Quiet One: Gin rarely speaks, and prefers to let other people do the talking for the most part.

Michizou Tachihara[]

Cquote1

Voiced by: Yu Hayashi (Japanese), Ben Diskin (English)

Cquote2

A short-tempered and trigger-happy member of the Black Lizards.

  • Blood Knight: In contrast to the other Black Lizards, Tachihara is very eager to go out guns blazing and not at all shy about making this known.
  • It's Personal: When the Port Mafia are after the Armed Detective Agency, it turns out Tachihara has some very personal beef with Yosano. His brother was the soldier that gave her her signature hairclip and committed suicide rather than be healed by her again and sent out to fight a pointless war.
  • Out of Focus: He gets nowhere near as much focus as the rest of the Port Mafia, and serves the same role as any other mook. Then later on we find out why - Tachihara is the fifth member of the Hunting Dogs.
  • Ship Tease: It's heavily implied he and Gin have feelings for each other.

Oda Sakunosuke[]

Cquote1

Voice by Junichi Suwabe (Japanese) and David Vincent (English)

Cquote2

Dazai's previous mentor in the Port Mafia and a close friend of Sakaguchi Angou. Has the ability "Flawless."

  • Despair Event Horizon: After Mimic kills the children Oda was looking after, he completely loses the will to live. He even runs into Ranpo who warns him that if he continues on to his destination, he'll die. Odasaku's response? "Yeah. I know."
  • Five Second Foreshadowing: His ability 'Flawless' allows him to see a few minutes into the future.
  • In-Series Nickname: Dazai calls him "Odasaku" and that's how the fans also like to refer to him.
  • Mentor Occupational Hazard: He's one of the most down-to-earth people in the show and tries to reign in Dazai's more crazy impulses.
  • Small Role, Big Impact: Oda's only in the story for a very small amount of time, but his impact on Dazai was huge, to the point of being the reason Dazai chooses to fight for the good guys because Odasaku urged him to be a good person if good and evil were one and the same to him.

  • Happily Married: To his wife, Zelda.
  • I Fight For The Strongest Side: He cites this nearly word-for-word when Atsushi asks why he'd agree to helping out the Agency against the Hunting Dogs.
  • Phenotype Stereotype: The first American character that we meet and of course he's tall, loud and has blonde hair and green eyes.
  • Rich In Dollars, Poor In Sense: When he loses all his money, he has no idea how to manage it once he starts trying to get rich again. Louisa has to stop him from constantly buying things on sale and Fitzgerald comments this is restrained for him and that when he was wealthy he'd just buy the entire store!
  • Running Gag: He is constantly getting the names of the cast wrong.

  • Early Installment Weirdness: She's more sadistic when we first meet her and she also has braces, but after her initial appearance we never see her with them again.
  • Fiery Redhead
  • High Heel Face Turn: Initially she's one of Fitzgerald's minions but helps Atsushi escape and leaves the Guild, working as a waitress and becoming an ally of the Armed Detective Agency.

  • Dissonant Serenity: He looks upon Ace's hanging corpse with a completely calm expression, which greatly unnerves Karma.
  • Elegant Classical Musician: He's shown playing the cello while he interrogates Katsura.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Dazai, being one of the only characters in the shown Dazai is not able to outmanoeuvre and Dazai even willingly allows the Hunting Dogs to arrest him so he can get sent to the same prison as Fyodor just to keep an eye on him. Ranpo lampshades it by commenting going against Fyodor is like going against Dazai.
  • Manipulative Bastard: His debut appearance has him playing Ace like a fiddle the entire time. He does the same thing to Shibusawa in Dead Apple.
  • Would Hurt A Child: He purposefully manipulates a bunch of street kids into attacking Atsushi and Kunikida to slow them down and tricks a little girl into blowing herself up right in front of the latter, just to try and break Kunikida's spirit.
