Tropedia

  • Before making a single edit, Tropedia EXPECTS our site policy and manual of style to be followed. Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so. Our policies can be reviewed here.
  • All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation.
  • All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.

  • Designated Hero: In Harlock Saga, Tadashi Daiba, despite being one of the protagonists, willingly helps create a ring for the OVA's Big Bad, Alberich, despite both being warned not to by Maetel and not being even blackmailed into doing making the ring for him, which results in Alberich using the ring to destroy a planet, killing millions.
  • Evil Is Sexy: The Mazone.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Harlock Saga gets this treatment from fans, due to its Idiot Plot.
  • French Love Captain Harlock: Or, more precisely, "Albator".
  • Fridge Horror: There's a Running Gag that Emeraldas is the dangerous twin and Maetel the harmless one, even though Maetel is the one who blew up a planet because she was disgusted. Not only is it the people who know them best making those remarks, but the twins fully agree. You have to wonder what the hell happened to consider a woman who destroyed a planet as harmless by comparison to Emeraldas.
  • Macekre: Several times; most egregiously, Carl Macek himself combined one series with Queen Millennia to create Captain Harlock and the Queen of a Thousand Years.
  • Needs More Love
  • What an Idiot!: In Harlock Saga, Maetel meets Tadashi Daiba and warns him not to create a ring for a certain man who plans on using the ring for malicious purposes.

You'd Expect: Tadashi to listen to Maetel's warning and not create the ring for that person, who also happens to be the OVA's Big Bad, Alberich.

Instead: When Alberich finally meets Daiba, Daiba initially refuses to create the ring for him, but, for whatever reason, Daiba changes his mind and agrees to make the ring for Alberich, completely disregarding Maetel's warning.

The Result: Alberich "repays" Daiba for his co-operation by shooting him in the chest (though Daiba survives because he was wearing a bullet proof vest underneath his shirt), and Alberich uses said ring to destroy several planets, murdering millions.

Even Worse: Alberich didn't even blackmail or coerce Daiba into making the ring for him. When Daiba initially refuses, Alberich just shrugs it off, saying he will look for someone else to make the ring for him, and apparently that was enough convince Daiba into saying yes. Imagine someone being that weak-willed. Not helping matters is that Daiba is one of the protagonists.

  • The Woobie: Mayu in the first series. The television show takes a perverse pleasure in torturing the seven year old girl in increasingly horrible ways. She's never actually abused, but has her pet bird eaten by a hawk. Gets attacked by wolves (!?). She even is forced to clean a church by herself with water dragged from a nearby stream.
