An Adventure Module is a pre-written campaign for use in a Role Playing Game. In contrast to a Homebrew Campaign, an Adventure Module has a plot, monsters, and treasure all ready for the Dungeon Master to use.
Modules often come with an expected Character Level written on the cover, so that the difficulty level matches the ability of the player characters. Well, usually. Or you can have a module like Tomb of Horrors, which is designed to more-or-less Total Party Kill the players constantly.
Modules may be suited to a specific published game setting, even being offered as part of the official metaplot for that setting. Others are designed to go in the Standard Fantasy Setting, and can even serve as a nice side quest in a homebrew.
While these sorts of adventures are much less work for the DM and have nice pre-assembled plots, they also lead to a more limited sandbox for players. At worst, it can lead to rampant Railroading.
