Chronos is a series of short stories (dubbed as "Episodes") by Ctra K.
In 1988, in Vilnius, Lithuania, Russian/Soviet/Merchant scientist Dmitri Kuznetsov invented the Kuznetsov device, a machine that facilitates the creation of different dimensions and flows of time, and as a result, travel through time and space.
As he utilises the machine's capability, however, it becomes increasingly clear that the history of the world he lived in and understood has become increasingly unrecognisable, and the travellers he picked up along the way are similarly displaced.
After his sudden and premature death, the remaining time travellers band together to form the Time Travellers' Union (SLK), an organisation dedicated to fixing the mistakes of the past (and present, and future) and to prevent the device from ever being used again. But just as their aims are complete, a defector in their ranks takes to naming himself King Chronos, hides himself in the labyrinthine structures of the time flows the SLK knows of, and effectively selling opportunities for various, previously ignorant individuals to take advantage of the technology, for good or ill.
At the nadir of their efforts, the SLK makes one last attempt at destroying time travel before its invention - apparently the one impossible temporal paradox. As the mission once again fails improbably, one more traveller is dragged into the mire - and this time, events become even more complex...
This work provides examples of:[]
- Alternate Timeline: fairly inevitable.
- Another Dimension: a combination of this and a large-scale computer simulation is what creates the Vilnius in which the SLK operates.
- Applied Phlebotinum: the robots, the femtoengineering, the perception filters. Justified somewhat in that some of it is from the protagonist's futures, and some, perhaps, from humanity's future.
- Doing in the Wizard: one traveller attempts this when travelling back to 1st Century Judea.
- Fake American: TRADER, quite literally a fake American.
- Fun with Acronyms: Temporal Reader And Derived Extrapolation Robot (T.R.A.D.E.R.)
- Our Time Machine Is Different
- Ridiculously-Human Robots: TRADER.
- Ripple-Effect-Proof Memory: justified, as the travellers are often outside of the timeline when the "ripple" occurs.
- Stable Time Loop: occurs notably in one Episode, and it's stable and it isn't, depending on the position in time from which it is viewed.
- Terminator Twosome: although the SLK doesn't always send just one operative.
