Daizenshuu EX. We cover anything and everything Dragon Ball in hopes of enlightening... and a little bit of entertaining. |
Daizenshuu EX is a major Dragon Ball fansite. It started as Vegetto EX's Home Page in 1998. The website has hosted a weekly Podcast since late 2005 that has run on a weekly schedule for over 250 episodes.
The hosts:
- Mike (Vegetto EX), the main host.
- Meri, the wife and Trunks fangirl.
- Julian, the guy in Japan.
Guest hosts include:
- Andrew Deluxe, another friend who has only seen bits of the series.
- Corey, a friend from Virginia.
- Heath (Hujio), from Kanzentai
- Jake (Herms), from Kanzentai
- Jeff, only familiar with the Cell Games era of the anime in his first appearances but was later brought on to go through the manga from beginning to end.
On April 1, 2012, the site and podcast went through a merger with fellow fansite and frequent collaborator Kanzentai, and was rebranded as Kanzenshuu.
The website can be found here and the podcast page is here.
- Adaptation Displacement: One of the podcast's taglines was "There's a site too?"
- April Fools' Day: Episode 71 starts out as a normal episode until they get to the main topic. Then things get weird.
- Ascended Extra: Meri was technically just a guest host in episode 2.
- In a more straight case, Hujio became a more regular host in the post-Kai era.
- Author Appeal: Unrepentantly. The Japanese version and Ocean dub over the Funimation dub. AMVs over fanart and fanfiction. The arcade games over the straight-to-console releases.
- Berserk Button: Call Mr. Satan by the H-word and Mike will throw you off the show.
- Bilingual Bonus: Sound clips from the series will always be from the Japanese version. Sometimes it's to give an example of the Japanese seiyuu's voicework... but not always.
- Cloudcuckoolander: Mike has shades of this at times.
Mike: Ooh. A Scouter. I'm going to put it on again. |
- Department of Redundancy Department: The animanga is always called "redundantly redundant". It's the manga of the anime of the manga!
- Ensemble Darkhorse: Pretty much the only reason anyone remembers Appule is because of Mike's inexplicable fondness of the character. Mike has since decided that Appule is no longer obscure enough and has started championing Freeza Soldier A.
- Evil Twin: Vegirot EX. (He has a red scouter.)
- Fan Dumb: A regular peeve of Mike's. It was even a segment at one point. Though Mike used to be part of it back in the day.
- Fan Girl: Meri can still turn back into a sixteen year-old for Trunks.
- Fan Vid: Mike and Meri are both into creating AMVs. Episode 49 resulted in a Namekian Godfather parody courtesy of Julian.
- Five-Man Band:
- The Hero: Mike
- The Lancer: Heath
- The Smart Guy: Julian
- The Chick: Meri
- Team Pet: Tara
- The Sixth Ranger: Jeff
- Gratuitous Japanese: Lampshaded. The closing words are very bland when they're done in English.
- Hilarious Outtakes
- I Need a Freaking Drink: Jeff, on agreeing to continue into GT.
- Instrumental Theme Tune: It's the Dragon Ball Z recap music. Original (1-199) and Buu arc (200+).
- It Is Pronounced "Tro-PAY": Japanese pronunciations over dub pronunciations. Though Krillin is acceptable as it's been noted many times that Kuririn is hard to pronounce.
- Live Episode: They've done a couple at conventions.
- MST3K Mantra: If it ever seems like someone is taking things too seriously, Mike reminds the viewer that Toiryama is ultimately a writer of poop jokes.
- Never Say "Die": Episode 66 features a comparison between lines that Saban made Funimation change to this effect after the first few episodes of the original 1996 dub had already been broadcast.
- Parlor Games: Two episodes featured rounds of Twenty Questions.
- Promoted Fanboy: Kaiserneko (of Dragon Ball Abridged fame) who has done a couple of news segments. They've also interviewed Steve Simmons, who provides the subtitles for Funimation.
- Recycled Script: The Kintoki special goes into how much Toriyama does this.
- Remaster: A remastered version of the podcast was announced in an audio press release during episode 63. In widescreen! It was a satire of the Orange Bricks.
- Running Gag: Many.
- Schedule Slip: Not so much the podcast itself, but the monthly "Manga Review of Awesomeness" has been pushed back more often than the Viz Big releases.
- In the end, it took 56 months to review 42 volumes.
- The Rival: Invoked with Heath (given Kanzentai's similar focus on comprehensive coverage of the franchise), though any rivalry there may have been was a friendly one. His title on the forum is "Number One Rival", though the recent merger makes him more of a co-webmaster with Mike (if not the main one, given his responsibility for much of the technical aspects).
- The Smurfette Principle: Meri is the only regular female host and most of the guests are male too.
- Squick: Julian's natural state of being around Mike in the earlier episodes.
- Subbing Versus Dubbing: They try to be neutral but are still very much on the subbing side.
- This Trope Is Bleep: Unicorn!
- Top Ten List: Meri's Top 5 lists.
- When I Was Your Age: Parodied whenever the hosts start talking about the days when they bought low-quality VHS fansubs from the local fleamarket.
