Deadpool Official Poster

Deadpool is a 2016 superhero black comedy film in the X-Men Cinematic Universe, with Ryan Reynolds returning as Wade Wilson/Deadpool. It is the first R-rated film in the franchise. It was a critical and financial success at the box office, with the film getting a Golden Globe nomination for Best Comedy Film. It received two sequels: one in 2018 with Reynolds returning, and a 2024 one named Deadpool & Wolverine where, as the title says, Hugh Jackman retakes his iconic Wolverine role to be Reynolds' Deuteragonist.

The plot is rather simple yet entertaining, depicting the life and almost un-life of a discharged military man, now mercenary named Wade Wilson. He leads quite the life taking jobs here and there with help of his best freiend Weasel (TJ Miller), then he hooks up wih a very hot escort lady named Vanessa (Morena Baccarin)... and then he's told that he has terminal cancer. As Wade and Vanessa desperately search for a cure, he's approached by a mysterious recruiter (Jed Rees) who tells him there IS a possible treatment and convinces him to go try it - and then he ends up tortured, forced to mutate, and horribly disfigured by the Mad Scientist Francis Freeman aka Ajax (Ed Skrein) and his Dark Action Girl assistant Christine aka Angel Dust (Gina Carano). Once he manages to fight his way out, Wade builds himself an identity as the mercenary Deadpool, HELL BENT on getting back at Francis for the horrors inflicted on him. . .

Tropes used in Deadpool (film) include:
  • Action Girl: Ellie aka Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
  • Actor Allusion: Deadpool sure likes making jabs to Green Lantern. "Please don't make my super suit green or animated!"
  • Adaptation Species Change: In the comics, Deadpoool was a human who had Wolverine's healing factor spliced into him. Here, he's a mutant whose natural healing powers have been dormant most of his life.
  • Adaptational Heroism: Comic!Deadpool was probably only an Anti-Villain at his worst and this one is still a Heroic Comedic Sociopath but he has a lot more standards in how he operates, treats his side cast as Vitriolic Best Buds, truly loves Vanessa and reserves his more gruesome acts for those who truly deserve it.
  • Adaptational Wimp: Downplayed with Vanessa, who's a human instead of a mutant here but is quite the Action Survivor Plucky Girl.
  • Big Bad: Francis Freeman/Ajax.
  • Bloodier and Gorier: The film is more violent than the previous X-Men films.
  • Brief Accent Imitation: Deadpool imitated Hugh Jackman's Australian accent when talking about Wolverine.
    • Wade asks Ajax is his name Basil Fawlty as he does a British accent.
  • The Cameo: Stan Lee, as the manager of the strip club where Vanessa works.
  • Cluster F-Bomb: Over 70 F-bombs were used in this film, mostly from the Merc with a Mouth.
  • Dark Action Girl: Christine aka Angel Dust.
  • Denser and Wackier: The film is much more hilarious than the previous X-Men films.
  • Fan Disservice: Wade is played by the very hunky Ryan Reynolds, and then he gets his trademark scars all over his face and body... through absolutely brutal experimentation and Cold-Blooded Torture from Ajax and his people. Which is followed by a just as brutal fight between a naked and now fully scarred Wade and Ajax, and finishes with Wade losing and being Impaled with Extreme Prejudice.
  • Flipping the Bird: Deadpool's detached hand gives Colossus the finger.
  • Groin Attack: Deadpool attempts one on Colossus. Attempts.
  • How We Got Here: The film uses a non-linear narrative to show how Wade became Deadpool.
  • Montages: Wade and Vanessa have sex throughout the months except for Lent.
    • Wade tracks down Ajax's crew while getting his suit upgraded.
  • The Nicknamer: Deadpool likes making nicknames for everybody. He likes calling Negasonic Teenage Warhead "Sinead" and Colossus "Silver Balls".
  • No Fourth Wall: The fourth wall is completely demolished with Wade pointing out a fourth wall break inside a fourth wall break.
  • Oh Crap: Deadpool's reaction that he left all of his guns behind.
  • Odd Friendship: Wade and Cunningham, another mutant who's also being used as a guinea pig by Ajax and Co. After Wade's first rampage and his horrifying fight with Ajax, he sees a dying Cunningham not too far from him.
    • Also Wade and Peter aka Colossus, and eventually Ellie aka Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
  • Pop-Cultured Badass: Deadpool sure likes cracking jokes about pop culture.
  • Plucky Girl: Vanessa, oh Vanessa.
  • Reality Ensues: Wade tries to kill three Mooks with one bullet. Only two of them die. After passing through the first two, the bullet doesn't have enough forward momentum to kill the third.
    • Wade loses his first fight against Francis quite badly. Happens when you're oxygen deprived.
  • Roaring Rampage of Revenge: Basically, Wade wants two things. One, to have Francis fix his face. Two, to MAKE HIM FUCKING PAY.
  • Serkis Folk: Colossus is made by motion capture.
  • The Stinger: Deadpool does a parody of Ferris Bueller's Day Off by telling the audience to go home. He later gives them an idea of what to expect for Deadpool 2.
  • Superman Stays Out of Gotham: As Deadpool lampshades with the conspicuous absence of the X-Men beyond Colossus and Negasonic Teenage Warhead. It's almost as though the studio couldn't afford another X-Man.
  • Talking Is a Free Action: Averted when Deadpool shoots Francis as Colossus monologues.
  • Take That: Deadpool likes making potshots to Wolverine, Origins and Green Lantern.
  • Toxic Friend Influence: Deadpool to the taxi driver Dopinder.
  • Truer to the Text: The film is far more true to the comics compared to X-Men Origins: Wolverine with Deadpool being the Merc with a Mouth, strong language, graphic violence and a comic accurate suit.
