The Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan[]
- One Amazing Chan and the Chan Clan author explains the absence of Mr. Chan's wife as being that she died giving birth to Scooter, her youngest.
Avatar: The Last Airbender[]
- Ursa dies giving birth to Azula in the Avatar: The Last Airbender alternate reality fic What It Is To Burn. In this reality, Azula is The Unfavorite due to Ozai's hatred of her for "killing her mother" while Zuko is his favorite.
- A now-deleted Legend of Korra fic has it happening to Korra, with her newborn child becoming the next Avatar.
- All Fall Down has Katara die of severe blood loss after a difficult labor with Tenzin. Interestingly, the chapter in which it happens is from Katara's own point of view; due to her experience with helping deliver children, she knows what's happening to her medically (failure to clot due to exhaustion) and that there's nothing the midwives can do to save her.
Final Fantasy[]
- One Final Fantasy X fic had Yuna die giving birth to her and Tidus's daughter.
Fire Emblem[]
This trope is ridiculously popular in Fire Emblem fandom:
- A lost Blazing Blade fic has Ninian and Florina succumb to this, with their husbands Eliwood and Hector watching on helplessly.
- "Female Robin dies in childbirth and her husband angsts over it" was so popular in Awakening fandom that this blog has a tag for it.
- It even happens to Robin's mother in one AU fic.
- Panne falls victim to this as the corollary of her Chickification in a Lost Forever comic depicting the canon Bad Future. Technically speaking she would've been fine in childbirth itself, but she stupidly let her Taguel instincts go free and ran off from the Ylissean castle to give birth in the forest, then was shot dead by two hunters who mistook her for a wild animal. She used her last bits of strength to finish delivering baby Yarne and ask the hunters to take the unharmed newborn to his father, Henry.
- A Fates fic has this happen to Camilla, of all characters. It's explained away by Keaton being the father of her child and the idea that birthing a Wolfskin baby would kill a human woman, but considering Camilla's body shape and overall physical strength, it's still pretty implausible.
- A good number of Fire Emblem: Three Houses fics with Female Byleth becoming pregnant use the possibility of this as a dramatic plot point due to the fate of her mother, Sitri, and her body being half artificial construct. Some fics actually do have her succumb, but others milk the drama of the fear by just narrowly having her survive.
- Implied to happen to Lysithea in this fic; the author's notes state that she goes through with a pregnancy knowing it'll kill her, and there's a time skip between her being pregnant and Claude spending time with their children as he visits Ordelia territory. It doesn't go into detail, though, and it's made clear that this is an AU of their ending where Claude was never able to find a cure for her double Crests, which canonically shortened her lifespan.
- A kink meme prompt revolves around Ingrid dying in childbirth with a little girl who turns out to bear a Crest, causing Sylvain all manner of angst and guilt and being unable to love the kid while antagonistic NPCs say at least Ingrid "did her duty as a woman". Another fic has Ingrid succumb to this while birthing twins. Because someone as strong and healthy as Ingrid is the go-to woman for this sort of thing.
Kill la Kill[]
- Without Her, as the title suggests, is about dealing with the aftermath of this. Satsuki Kiryuin passed away shortly after her daughter, Mika, was born.
RWBY[]
- The Jaune/Cardin fic "I'll Go" subjects Pyrrha Nikos to this offscreen to justify Jaune being a single father and his eventual hookup with Cardin. Considering how casually the narrative mentions it, this also doubles as Stuffed Into the Fridge and Disposable Woman.
Voltron[]
- This Voltron: Legendary Defender fic focusing on the reality where Zarkon never became corrupted and was a good father to Lotor has this as the reason his wife/Lotor's mother Honerva is no longer around.
- Back to Death by Childbirth
