Main Characters[]
Akira Fudo/Devilman/Amon/Violence Jack[]
Voiced by: Ryoichi Tanaka (TV), Sho Hayami (OVA), Shinji Takeda (Amon), Kouki Uchiyama and Satoshi Yamazaki (Crybaby), Shintaro Asanuma (Cyborg 009 vs. Devilman)
Associated tropes:
- Anti-Hero: Type I--> Type V (Vol I) --> Type III
- Back From the Dead: As Violence Jack.
- Blood Knight:
- One-Man Army
- Super-Powered Evil Side: Amon
- Walking Shirtless Scene: As Devilman.
Ryo Asuka/Satan[]
Voiced by: Yuu Mizushima (OVA)
Associated tropes:
- Badass Longcoat: And it's pretty damn well animated in the OVAs.
- Bishonen
- Blue Eyes
- Crazy Jealous Guy
- Hermaphrodite
- Light Is Not Good
- Love Makes You Crazy
- Satan
Miki Makimura[]
Voiced by: Sumie Sakai (TV), Rihoko Yoshida (TV pilot), Jun Kounomaki (OVA), Atsuko Enomoto (Amon), Megumi Han (Devilman Crybaby), Saori Hayami (Cyborg 009 vs. Devilman)
Associated tropes:
- Action Girl: Upgraded to one in the NES game. Though she's no slouch in the original manga either.
- Alliterative Name
- An Arm and a Leg: It wasn't enough that someone had to tear open her backside with a trench knife, her attackers completely cut her to pieces and burned the pieces of her body on pikes. When Akira sees her head lifeless on top of a pike, he snaps and incinerates her killers.
- Break the Cutie: In the manga, she was last seen alive so utterly broken and screaming in despair upon seeing her little brother's tear-soaked severed head being held by someone she considered a neighbor as the rest of the mob surround her.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: In the TV series, she becomes this on occasion, especially whenever Lala's around.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: No matter which version of Devilman you watch (except Toei Animation's in which she lives), this inevitably happens to her. Best she gets? Decapitated with a katana after finding the chopped up remains of her kid brother, then your corpse chopped up and put on display. Second up, shot in the leg, seeing your friend's murdered corpse, having your back cut wide open, then your corpse chopped up and put on display. Worst? Having your back cut wide open, and still being very much alive but too injured to fight back as you are stabbed repeatedly in front of your best friend.
- Cute Witch: In Grimoire, she likes to wear a pointed witch's hat and a dark cape to evoke this image.
- Dead Guy on Display: The mob beheads her and tear her body apart, and then stuck her head and limbs on pikes to parade them around.
- Kill the Cutie: In the worst way possible! One of the nicer girls in the story is slated for a shocking murder caused by a witch hunt when she is unable to flee (And in Crybaby, unable "pass the baton" to Akira), setting up Akira to become a Woobie, Destroyer of Worlds.
- Love Interest: To Akira
- Off With Her Head: This is how she dies. At least in the OVA Amon: Apocalypse of Devilman, it shows the mob holding her down and cutting off her head while she was very much alive.
- Plucky Girl: The only way top stop her when she has a goal in her mind would be killing her. Sadly, that's exactly what happens. Unless you're watching the '70s TV series, in which she's still alive at the end.
- Sukeban: Implied to be one, at least in the original work (in the TV series, she's more of a normal teenage girl, albeit one with a hot temper). She's well-known for her open-handed slaps, even earning the nickname "Miki the Hands" in the manga.
- Tsundere: Especially in the '70s TV series, in which Akira is often the recipient of said open-handed slaps when he gets out of hand. She'll also go dere-dere on him if she shows an attraction to other girls.
Demons[]
Maegawa[]
Associated tropes:
Jinmen[]
Associated tropes:
- And I Must Scream: Anyone who falls victim to him are damned to an eternity as a sentient tile in his shell.
- Expy: An almost identical demon appears in Strange Days; the only evidence that it's not Jinmen himself is that he gets killed and that Jinmen was long dead at this point.
- Evil Gloating:
- Insane Troll Logic: He claims to have the moral high ground against Devilman because he keeps his victims alive even after he's consumed them.
- Turtle Power:
- Would Hurt a Child
Agwel[]
Associated tropes:
Ghelmer[]
Associated tropes:
Sirene[]
Voiced by: Kyoko Satomi (TV), Yoshiko Sakakibara (OVA)
Associated tropes:
- Dark Action Girl
- You Sexy Beast/ Ugly Cute: Akira claims that logically, he should be horrified by the sight of Sirene. However, Akira seems to appreciate the beauty of Sirene's death smile. Maybe that's his devil side talking.
- Woman in White: Um, sort of.
Kaim[]
Associated tropes:
- A Good Way to Die: He's willing to sacrifice himself if it'll let his love interest Sirene take Devilman down with her.
Zan[]
Associated tropes:
Psycho Jenny[]
Associated tropes:
Lala[]
Voiced by: Kazuko Sawada (TV)
Associated tropes:
- Abhorrent Admirer: Akira/Devilman clearly can't stand her. Lala doesn't care and pursues him anyway.
- Canon Foreigner: Lala is in the 1972 TV series only, and does not appear in the manga or in any other anime adaptation.
- Dumb Blonde: OH SO MUCH.
- The Rival: She's Miki's nemesis, for a time. Lala enjoys teasing and trolling Miki in particular.
- Sarcasm Blind: Again, OH SO MUCH.
Zenon[]
Associated tropes:
- Satan: Well he is not Satan but his two forms resemble two depictions of Satan The Divine Comedy Version (being a demon with 3 faces) and The Dragon of Revelation
