Voltron: Legendary Defender practically redefines this trope. Time to go grab a snack, this will take a while:
- Keith/Lance shippers are not kind to Shiro (Keith's other most popular partner) or Acxa and Allura (because they're girls and Het Is Ew). Extreme Klance fans were so obsessed with proving their ship's superiority that they would tell other fans to die for their ship! Heck, they've even issued threats to the creators and harassed the voice actors themselves in the name of Klance. It's little wonder the ship has the worst reputation in the fandom, to the point where the ones who do ship it without going to extremes and know how to be civil to other shippers are embarrassed to be associated with it.
- The subset of Klance fans who really hate Allurance have been known to brush off the latter relationship as just a footnote, declaring it non-canon due to Allura sacrificing herself to fix the broken realities and claiming that without her there, Lance is free to "move on" with Keith, who also ended the series single. Other fans claim that being with Allura "ruined Lance's character" by making him more humble and mature, accusing the show of turning him into "just Allura's boyfriend." Yet many of these shippers were happy enough to pretend Lance and Keith's lives revolved around each other. To this day, they still claim Klance "won" and that Lance's declaration of loving Allura forever is bad because "he's young and deserves to move on"-as if not only is it a bad thing to fall in a forever kind of love at his age, but Allura is dead and buried forever, as opposed to simply ascended for a while and strongly hinted to be coming back as per the Lions flying off to get her and Word of God's statement that she will return some day!
- Allura herself is demonized as a slut, or accused of using Lance as a rebound due to them getting together after Allura broke it off with Lotor. They conveniently forget that a good deal of time passed between the sixth and eighth seasons, and that Allura had obviously used that time to heal from her heartbreak and truly open her heart to Lance. Then again, that nasty scarlet woman did have the cheek to love more than one man in her life, how dare she.
- Keith/Shiro was a more or less chill shipping group for a while, with the "worst" of fans being over-eager and obsessive about the possibility of it being canon. Then season 7 revealed Shiro's ex-boyfriend Adam and gave Keith ship tease with Acxa...and the meltdowns started. Adam was deemed an abusive, insensitive asshole for not wanting the terminally ill Shiro to risk his health by going to Kerberos, and Acxa's possible feelings for Keith were belittled with fans passive-aggressively claiming she "wasn't a threat" because Keith was so obviously gay (but only if he fell for Shiro, of course).
- Sheith shippers who bash both Adam and Curtis (see below) basically believe only Keith is worthy of Shiro's love because Keith has gone above and beyond for his sake. As if Keith was only saving and helping Shiro to win his heart, and not because he truly cares for him.
- Some Sheith shippers began to push back against the Klance fans' behavior by trying to paint Lance as a horrible person and Klance as "abusive." While Lance did have moments of being quite the jerkass to Keith, if you listened to some Sheith shippers Lance went out of his way to bully Keith just for breathing too loudly and tried to turn the rest of the team against him just for the fun of it!
- Some insecure Sheith fans have recently gone so far as to see Pidge as a threat due to her being Shiro's other closest relationship on the team. Never mind that their relationship is purely platonic, with both seeing the other as a surrogate sibling, not to mention the fact that he's ten years older than her so they weren't going to become a canon pair anyway.
- Shiro himself is either passively dismissed (at best) or downright loathed (at worst) by rabid Keith fans who shipped Sheith only because they saw Shiro as a prize to be won by poor woobie Keith who suffered so much, saved Shiro multiple times, and loved him more than anyone else ever could. Fans outright accuse Shiro of abandoning Keith in the last season for not being attached at the hip to him and then marrying Curtis, even going so far as to write or demand fics where Shiro must grovel at Keith's feet begging his forgiveness!
- Basically, after spending years being "victimized", the Keith/Shiro fans became EXACTLY the same kind of "bad fan" they complained about. With added hypocrisy coming from them shouting against anyone threatening their ship while refusing to see the rotten apples on their side.
- One the one-year anniversary of the finale, Sheith shippers dove headfirst into delusional denial, basically striking the epilogue from the record and pretending their shipper dreams came true and how December 14 would always be Sheith's Wedding Anniversary.
- Lotor/Allura shippers hate Lance. When Allura started to develop feelings for him after he matured as a person, Lotura fans refused to accept this and constantly insisted Lance was still the same immature flirt he was in the early seasons. They claim he "forced" and "sexually harassed" Allura into a relationship with him while pretending Lotor was so supportive of Allura and never lied to and used her. Some fans even tried to deny Allura loved Lance at all, claiming she was so miserable with him that she "died" at the end just to escape him and be with Lotor again in the afterlife!
- Other Lotura fans who don't go as far as to call Lance a sexual predator still think he's not good for Allura because only Lotor can understand how much Allura has suffered and lost while Lance has led a happy privileged life of family love and nice things. Some fics have even suggested she would break up with Lance based on this, or cheat on him with Lotor. Never mind that in canon, Lance proves to be the sensitive and supportive beacon of light when Allura needs it the most, and Allura is very appreciative of this fact.
- Shiro/Allura shippers took their anger out on Keith when the reveal of Shiro's sexuality sank their ship. They blamed Keith for being too close to Shiro, taking away any screen time he could have with Allura, and accused him of "kneecapping" Shiro into a useless damsel while Allura "empowered" him.
- Lance gets a bum rap from this group, too, with his good points being ignored in favor of magnifying his flaws to make Shiro look like the better choice for Allura. Right down to one fic series even flat-out saying that Allura only ended up "dying" at the end of the series because she chose to date Lance instead of Shiro-and having Shiro correct this by romancing her!
- Some Shiro/Allura shippers were so possessive of their ship that they attacked the writers for "yeeting Shiro being gay into their faces" by announcing it so late in the game, after they'd spent six seasons building headcanons and compiling "evidence" that Shiro and Allura were meant to be and would be the Official Couple.
- James Griffin gets this from Sheith and Klance shippers too, because James bullied Keith when they were teenagers. Never mind that James grew up and became a better person, and that Keith wasn't that kind to James back then either.
- Shiro's eventual canon husband Curtis probably gets this the worst of all characters, for having the sheer audacity to become Shiro's Second Love at the end instead of the fan-preferred Keith. Fans go so far as to refuse to call the man by his name, maliciously misnaming him "Curtains" or "Rando," and basically Un-Person him, calling him a plot device or a PR stunt. Revenge Fics where he's an evil monster or gets gruesomely killed, or Shiro kicks him aside without a second thought because he could never love a stupid secondary character, flooded AO3 and social media for over a year after the finale aired.
- While not as extreme as other shippers, Pidge/Lance fans went from "chill side group" to "OMG Plance is so endgame!" after season 7 showed a few close moments between the two (notably, Lance freaking out when Zethrid and Ezor threatened to torture Pidge). However, by this time it was clear Lance was completely in love with Allura and that she was starting to return his feelings, and few later Pidge showed her support of their potential hook-up. This didn't stop some fans from insisting that their ship was going to be endgame anyway; consequently, this also led to a lot of negativity towards Allura and the Allurance ship. Allura's fate in the finale made it easy for them to erase Lance's love for her by having him "move on" with Pidge... even when Lance has pretty much said Allura will always be his One True Love and Pidge is more or less a Celibate Heroine who, while approving of other people's romances and having a bit of Ship Tease with Hunk, had life goals that revolved around her work and her family rather than netting herself a guy or a girl.
- A very tiny Vocal Minority of Shiro/Curtis and Shiro/Adam fans do not like Keith, decrying him as a "skinny ass white boy" and insisting Shiro could only be attracted to Ambiguously Brown men - even accusing Sheith shippers of racism! This is rather distasteful, as it implies that Shiro is shallow enough to fetishize his lovers for their skin tones instead of loving them for who they are.
