The Pirates

Captain Walter Herindale

Walter tries very hard to be a pirate, and with a little more practice he’ll be pillaging and looting with the best of them. Now, if he can only forget all that pesky magical engineering training.

• Angel Winged Pirate: He’s a fairly good planner and knows how to keep the crew orderly, but he’s loaded with goofiness.
• Eyepatch of Power: Before the dimension jumping.
• Mad Scientist: He invented the engine the pirates use for their ship. It allows the ship to fly, but must be run while drunk.
• Ooh, Me Accent's Slipping / Talk Like a Pirate: This is often lampshaded.
• Gadgeteer Genius: has a degree in Magitek engineering and the only one that knows how to repair the Cool Ship without Stuff Blowing Up.

“Oh that’s fine, go ahead. It’ll just kill YOU.”

• Good Morning, Crono: in the High School AU arc.
• The Gunslinger
• Pirates Who Don't Do Anything: Averted. He does piracy, but he's just not good at it.
• Sky Pirate: First just Walter, then the rest of the crew.
• Who's on First?: Walter is the Costello to Tiren’s Abbott.
• Winged Humanoid: He comes from a race of winged people. The wings start out cute and ineffectual, but later capable of retracting and flight.

Tiren

Life has taught Tiren that often the most straight forward approaches yield the best results. That just happens to involve a lot of punching, or drinking. Tiren often finds herself acting as the brawn to the rest of the group’s lack of brain.

• Action Girl: In the first ten comics or so she takes down a Kraken single handedly. She only improves from there.
• Anguished Declaration of Love: she made it with Love (craftian horror).
• Bottle Fairy
• Catgirl / Half-Human Hybrid: Word of God has released work stating she has a human mother. The mother in question has been mentioned, but not shown in the comic itself.
• Determinator: no prison will hold her for long, and the jailors will be a lost cause.
• Extended Disarming: See hyperspace arsenal below. Marty is shocked when he "searches" her.
• Hyperspace Arsenal: Through intense training Tiren has learned to hide an innumerable amount of weapons on her person, regardless of what she happens to be wearing.

Walter: Lass, ya don’t have pockets. Where’d ya keep ‘em? (dope slap) Tiren: Shhh… Ninja secret!

• Instant Awesome, Just Add Ninja
• Noodle Incident: "Shut up you damned pirate! I'm not going to just sit here and be sold into slavery again."
• What Did I Do Last Night?: The series starts OFF with Tiren wondering that. Walter found her as a stowaway while she was sleeping. It happens a few more times in the story. (Hey, they're pirates. They get drunk)
• White Haired Pretty Gel

Elator “Elly” Cernocis

Elator is skittish, squeamish, and easily shocked. This mind set does leave him oddly capable when working under pressure, mostly because of the constant state of blind panic he’s under. He also disavows all knowledge of that infernal raccoon.

• Bedmate Reveal / Sleep Cute: with the raccoon. Cue girlish screams.
• The Chick: Very much the Heart of the Pirates.
• The Comically Serious: He can be hilarious, mostly due to raccoon and pirate antics he has little to do with.
• Cry Cute: after getting punished by Walter.
• Dojikko: he trips so adorably.
• Dude Looks Like a Lady: To the point that the artist had to state Elly was a man when showing him to some students.
• Estrogen Brigade Bait
• Girlish Pigtails / Long Hair Is Feminine: Tiren braided his hair this way with cursed hairties, which causes much of Elator's issues with Marty
• Hidden Depths: he manages to defuse at least two mutinies due to rum and politics.
  • Or seen as learning how to play his strengths or be a Guile Hero.
• Non-Action Guy: Not for lack of trying and the raccoon keeps getting in the way.
• Our Elves Are Better: Subverted, he's clumsy, average intelligence, wimpy, cowardly, and beautiful by elven standards.
• Pretty Freeloaders: Until Walter caught on and made him lookout.
• Unwanted Harem: Mary, Marty, HSUA Tria, and Raque. He thinks they’re icky.
• Why Did It Have To Be Raccoons: Does this remind you of anything?

Salindorani “Sal” Tuzmenalozapinus

Cards, dice, and even completely unrelated random real world events tend to be in her favor. The result is she is the most knowledgable of the group, though she specializes in probability and telling the difference between random events and chaos.

• Awesome By Analysis: Sal does NOT see the future. Her expertise is analyzing what she already has to figure out the problems.
• Born Lucky: Sal is the future high priestess of the god of Randomness, things tend to go her way.
• Dangerously Genre Savvy: Years of cliché kidnapping tend to do that.
• Only Sane Woman Only person who comes up with a practical idea on figuring out who is Elly and who is The King Oh, and she wasn't aware of what was going on before they told her.
• Designated Victim / Distressed Damsel: So common she treats kidnapping and rescuing like waiting for the bus.
• Overly Long Name: Fitting for the Future High Priestess of Zelotalinixia Ixalinlexa AKA Phred
• Religion Is Magic: Averted.

Leeroy Perkins

Sal's best friend and rival. He's second in command of temple security and second best in predictions... next to Sal.

• Can't Catch Up: It seems no matter how good Leeroy gets, the best he can be is Number Two to Sal.
• Church Militant: Lieutenant of the temple’s security for years. Reassigned to protect Sal, and act as the crew’s second mate.
• Dual-Wielding: He fights with a pair of daggers.
• Leeroy Jenkins: Namesake. He doesn't really charge into fights, though he does get overeager. Think of how he handled the hostage crisis.
• Unlucky Childhood Friend: He just wants to be special and beat Sal at cards.
• White-Haired Pretty Boy

The Raccoon

Elly is also unnaturally attractive to raccoons, or at least, a particular raccoon.

• Bedmate Reveal / Sleep Cute: with Elly. Cue girlish screams.
• Came Back Wrong: if you believe the raccoon and Raque are one-in-the-same. Others with this theory believe it's Came Back Sexy.
• The Glomp: she will always land on the face.
• Team Pet
• Small Annoying Creature: "Elly, get rid of that raccoon!" "I'm trying!!"
• Spanner in the Works: if it appears during a dramatic moment, expect things to get embarrassingly derailed.

The Imperial Guard

General Roseus Izor

The most brilliant mind of our generation... is working for an idiot.

• Can't Hold His Liquor: Tiren and Walter have spent the last few days drinking and only have an alcohol blush. Izor throws up on Mary and passes out

Mary Spirkoy

• Informed Attribute: She’s smart. It’s just difficult to tell from the way she talks, and acts, and thinks.
• In the Name of the Moon: "...we will band together and use the power of our friendship to..." *BAM!*
• Magical Girl: Mary’s original outfit is suspiciously Sailor Senshi-esque.
• Mary Sue / Meaningful Name: deliberately a spoof.
• New Powers as the Plot Demands: Both sisters. Mostly Mary though.
• Smash Sisters: Mary acts as a Mezzer/Buffer to Sue.
• Rose-Haired Girl
• Twin Telepathy: Somewhat taken advantage of when she becomes the mole.

Sue Spirkoy

Mary's more centered twin sister and functionally Izor's lieutenant.

• Different As Night and Day: she is a stark contrast to her sister in both personality and looks.

Gary Stu

The elder of the Stu brothers.

• Allergic to Love: does not like crowds. Does not like being swarmed by women.

• Promotion to Parent: Gary disciplines and nags Marty much like a parent. Their backstory art implies he took the role during the fight with Nonspecific Evil Mage #157675, as Gary is exercising the powers inherent thereof.

Marty Stu

The younger of the Stu Brothers.

• BFS: Big Freaking Sword/Axe/Hammer/Thing-that-kills.
• Boisterous Bruiser: He has flirted with both Tiren and Elly while fighting them.

• Hyperspace Arsenal: His weapons are summoned.
• Sexy Man, Instant Harem: happens to both Stus, but Marty basks in it.
• Word of Gay: Namely that Marty is straight. He's just absolutely sure that Elly is a girl.

The Dragon

The dragon probably came from certain parties deep seated desire for violence.

Emperor Kreedor

The human symbol of the Kreedor Empire.

• A God I Am: thinks sacrificing Sal will achieve him this.
• Big Bad
• Conservation of Competence: Idiot Ball hog.

Izor: Look, the man still thinks eating his broccoli will give him super strength. We’re not exactly dealing with a paragon of intelligence.

• Disproportionate Retribution: Kreedor's hissy fits involve Izor sacking another country.

Private Charles

Charles is a meek royal guard that the pirates befriended at chokehold in Kreedor's castle.

• No Sense of Direction - He was supposed to escort the prisoners to the dungeon. He gave them a grand tour instead.
• Poke the Poodle - Tiren steals his last sandwich.
• Punch Clock Villain - He follows his orders, just as Izor said. Look at his pic.
• Rule 63: Look at Charles. Now look at Sal. Only Six Faces?

Sakura

The Little Miss Perfect that falls head over heels for Walter in the High School arc.

• Butt Monkey - she really didn't deserve that nasty black eye.
• Cat Fight / Oh Crap - after realizing she pissed off Tiren and that Walter is the only thing holding back her wrath.
• Feminine Women Can Cook - which leads to Tiren trying to outbake her.
• Foregone Conclusion / Romantic False Lead - Sakura ultimately loses HSAU Walter to HSAU Tiren, but the real Walter and Tiren resolve nothing.
• Genre Blind - she could not tell that Tiren had some feelings for Walter, or that Mary and Sue wanted her dead. Culminating into the moment killer below.
• Moment Killer - giving Walter chocolate during Tiren's blatant attempt to spit it out.
• Through His Stomach - she loves to cook for people, especially Walter.

Raqu’falicoona “Raque”

She may singlehandedly cause the world to fall apart by trying to fulfill a sex fantasy. And she is terrifying doing it.

• Aren't You Going to Ravish Me?: Raque tries to invoke it. She calls it "Ravage" and it fails horribly
• Beneath the Mask: She originally looks kinda cute then we get moments like this.
• Bedmate Reveal: happens before the seduction/rape attempts.
• Gambit Pileup: of lies. It's like she's playing Russian Roulette. Against herself. With an automatic.
• Laughing Mad: imagine Kefka mixed with hyenas on PCP.
• Indy Ploy: it's not just crazy enough to work, she's just crazy enough to work.
• Replacement Goldfish: Elly’s resemblance to the king may have sparked her interest in him.
• Shock and Awe
• Victim Falls For Rapist/Double Standard Rape (Female on Male): Played straight and averted when Raque tries to invoke this on Elly. The readers are left feeling deliberately uncomfortable.
• Yandere

Queen "Queenie" Marl'vadr'via

The High Queen of the Elfin Kingdom is quite calm and reasoning with her guests.

• Conspiracy Theorist: At first she believes the main cast to be minor troublemakers, but once her husband steps out for a bit the troublemaker theory escalates.
• God Save Us From the Queen: She tells Elly she is going to torture him because the king disappeared for a few hours.
• The Woman Wearing the Queenly Mask: She puts on a good face before her subjects until...
• It Got Worse: See the torture issue? Yeah... It REALLY got worse
• Sanity Slippage: She goes from a compassionate queen to someone not out of place in Mortal Kombat

Temple of Phred

• The Almighty Janitor's Closet: served as a divining pool to guide the heroes.
• The Casino
• Random Number God
• What Do You Mean Its Not Symbolic: it is a place of worship after all.

Kreedor Empire

• Bad Job, Worse Uniform: the military uniform looks remarkably like a nun's habit.
• Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy: there is one. Imperial soldiers are trained in combat aptitude, physical fitness, tactics and more. We are never shown the quality of said training, so it's difficult to tell whether the incompetence is do to poor training or morale (see below).
• Lawful Stupid: half of the Redshirt Army are this.
• Punch Clock Villain: the other half of the Mooks are doing it for college money.

"Are you nuts? The catgirl just killed like twenty guys!"

Elven Royal Court

• And I Must Scream:
  • The king is aware of the queen and Raque's mental issues.
  • Raque might also qualify given her current position versus her desired position.
• Insistent Terminology: Elfs are a completely different race from elves.
• Petting Zoo People: The kingdom is loaded with bunny girls, dalmatian guys, and raccoon sociopaths.
• Punctuation Shaker /TheUnpronounceable: King Elan'vi'dor? Queen Marl'vadr'via? Handmaiden Raqu’falicoona?
• Prince and Pauper: the king pulls this on an unwitting Elly.
• Royally Screwed-Up: The king wants to ditch. Whether its ditching the kingdom or his wife is hard to say. The queen might be on drugs. She at least puts on a good front.
• Unfazed Everyman: The kingdom itself, as it attracts dimensional hoppers. They even make a festival out of it. The king seems relieved that this time they only got a bunch of fools.
