Earth Defense Force 2025 is a 2013 game.
Seven years after the last nest of giant insects was destroyed in Arizona, the giant arthropods have returned and it's the mission of the EDF to take care of them. Though no one is sure of how they have survived....
Developed by Sandlot and published by D3Publisher.
Not to be confused with the Jaleco Shoot'Em Up Earth Defense Force.
This game provides examples of:
- Aliens Are Bastards: The Ravagers, further emphasized by their invisibility, that makes them look cold and distant.
- Alien Invasion: Of the All-Out Attack variety. And that's without a drop of exaggeration: humanoid mechas, giant ships to literally cover Earth's sky and gives the humanity's army no rest, and at last, dragons.
- Amazon Brigade: The Wing Divers, a special forces unit equipped with jet packs to fly, are composed solely of females.
- Attack of the 50 Foot Whatever: Insects and arachnids in this case. You begin fighting ants.Giant ants, of course.
- Audible Sharpness: The projectiles that the flying insects launch on their targets are both sharp as visibly audible, sounding like two sharp blades being rubbed against each other.
- Big Creepy-Crawlies: Ants and wasps.
- Bug War: Though they're not the only problems, as the Ravagers have well more advanced weapons than berserk arthropods.
- Collision Damage: The spiders' nets, for some reason, actually damages you, to the point that they use it as weapon, launching threads towards the player.
- Continuity Nod:
- Crapsack World: Invoked by one soldier, believing that the level of effort that the Ravagers put on conquering Earth must be because their home planet must be horrible in some way.
- Crusading Widower: Implied by one soldier who screams "I was happy when my wife was alive!"
- Deflector Shields:But of course the aliens have that! Missiles and a giant special cannon are ineffective against it.
- Determinator: By the last mission, the player's squad is the only one who is still resisting to the Ravagers. Things have gotten really bad.
- Die, Chair, Die!: You can destroy buildings using your weapons.
- Earth Is a Battlefield: There's no cool outer space battles here. Battles are fought at ground-level.
- Excuse Plot: The Ravagers have no reasoning for their behaviour, and it's a pure riddle of why they should use giant arthropods as part of their army. Or dragons by the way.
- Failed a Spot Check: A random soldier yelling "Dammit, I forgot the bullets!"
- Fake Ultimate Hero: Invoked by one soldier towards one of the members of the Mission Control, who begins to talk about the hero who saved the Earth eight years ago, apparently by the umpteenth time. As we know, the soldier is very wrong.
- Faux Action Girls:The game seems to be playing it for laughs though. The Wing Divers are supposed to have an advantage over the giant insects because they can't fly, and everyone around you wait for their rescue in mission 3 like they are their "saviours". They don't come and in mission 4 you have to rescue them because the giant insects have captured the flying girls...in very visible giant spider nets.
- Frickin' Laser Beams: The Ravagers have several weapons equipped with these.
- From Bad to Worse: The Earth Eaters weapons have already apparently helped the Ravagers in wiping out half of Earth's population when the Ravagers then reveal their newest weapon: dragons. Flying reptiles able to fly and launch fire balls. Yes, dragons.
- Giant Spiders: But of course, along with giant spider webs.
- Hand Wave: Despite being clearly arachnids, the spiders are stated to be "spider-like bugs", that don't makes a minimal sense if you know biology. The only possible reason for this kind of weirdness is that the developers thought that "giant insects" sounded better than "giant arthropods".
- Humongous Mecha: The Ravagers use several of these.
- Kill Sat: The Satellite Blaster. As he on the side of our heroes, however, it's obviously not a very effective weapon and is only fired once before breaking.
- King Mook: Two examples:
- The Queen of The Flying Giant Insects. She is stated to be the common ancestor of all the individuals in the group.
- A giant dragon in Mission 80. Not only he is bigger than other individuals of his species, but also purple.
- Legendary in the Sequel: Storm 1 became this, to the point one soldier even affirms that his story was exaggerated to make it a legend!
- The Mothership: Ten of them in fact. It is said that is ten times the amount of the last time that the Ravagers came to Earth.
- Our Dragons Are Different: No, we're not kidding. The Ravagers have dragons on their ranks. They look like western dragons but their fire balls are stated to be made of plasma.
- Playing With Fire: The Ravager's dragons launch balls of plasma on the Earth's army..
- Teleporters and Transporters: The aliens use teleportation as their FTL way of travel. Very sharp, you could say.
- Tempting Fate: Your allies mention from time to time about the giant insects not being able to fly and that this fact helps mankind in their conflict with them. Giant insects that can indeed fly appear mid-game, and they can launch sharp, fast and giant projectiles from air on top of it.
- Villain Forgot to Level Grind: Completely averted. The Ravagers not only come up with a bigger army but also new weapons that they reveal as the war continues.
