Eerie Cuties is a webcomic created and drawn by Gisèle Lagacé which started on started on June 1, 2009 and follows the adventures of Layla and Nina Delacroix, two vampire sisters, at Charybdis Heights. So far they have met a French teacher with a possessed arm, a young succubus, a Catboy, a Werewolf and a masked janitor. As with her previous works, the comic is a mix of slice-of-life and sitcom set within a school atmosphere, most of the jokes being typical of a series set in high school, but in a supernatural one.
It's co-written by both Gisèle Lagacé and Dave Zero1, with colors done by Miguel Marques in the first volume. With the shift to full page black & white manga style, inks (and other inputs) by Shouri.
The Hellrune Coven got a Spin-Off strip, Magick Chicks. After her transfer to the succubi-only school (Tartarus Academy), Chloe got her own spin-off too - Dangerously Chloe.
Now has a character page.
Eerie Cuties provides examples of the following tropes:[]
- Abhorrent Admirer: Blair to pretty much every female and Nina's doppleganger to Kade.
- Absurdly Youthful Mother: Nina and Layla's mother, Maria does not look like someone who could have had 13 children. Justified in that she's a vampire.
- Accidental Kiss: Nina, when she falls on Kade (long story). She's upset about it, as it was her first.
- And now she has a crush on him, so it's cool.
- A-Cup Angst:
- Even though Chloe acknowledged that her looks were OK for human standards she was really self conscious about her body/breasts as a Succubus. It didn't last long though. Layla also showed some concern over her own breasts after Chloe's * ahem* sudden growth, although it may be related to Envy rather than self consciousness.
- And now Chloe wants her former, smaller breast size back. I guess "Be careful what you wish for?"
- She has since found a more comfortable size thanks to the Doompanties' magic allowing her to alter them.
- Brooke as well.
- About Layla's envy...
- Nina shows signs of this beginning to develop after this page.
- Alcohol Hic: Nina, after drinking some (chocolate-flavored) Baileys. Chloe too.
- All-Ghouls School
- All Girls Like Ponies: Nina is turned into a boy when she's hit by a gender-changing orb; when she changes back into a girl, she says: "Hey! I like ponies again!"
- Almost Kiss: Brooke and Layla... then Layla ruins the moment.
- Alpha Bitch:
- Melissa Hellrune and her Girl Posse. When they were transferred, there was some struggle for the place of local Queen Bee.
- Chloe has thrown her hat into the ring after wearing the Doom Panties.
- Amazingly Embarrassing Parents: Nina thinks of her mom like this sometimes. Layla... might concur.
- Amplifier Artifact: For a succubus. Guess how it looks...
- Arbitrary Skepticism: Melissa Hellrune and her friends laugh at people who believe in a cursed mirror...despite attending a school for various mythical beings and being witches themselves.
- Arranged Marriage: Layla's father chose a future spouse for her when she was an infant. Layla only found out about this when she was 16. Suffice to say, she wasn't happy about it.
- Until she saw the would-be groom, anyway.
- Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: "...Also, she had a kitty. Its name was Mr. Boodles."
- Art Shift: Well more like format shift. From colored newspaper like strips to more b&w manga like pages to allow more room for storytelling. The former has been collected in a volume set and now on sale for purchase.
- Artifact of Doom: The Orb of Tiresias becomes this after bonding with Blair's perverted mind and starts turning all guys and girls into Blair's feminine ideal: vapid valley girls. The range of effect seems to be spreading too. Before falling victim to its effects herself, Professor Twigitt mentions that if this continues, all human life on Earth will become extinct in a generation or two.
- The succubus Doom Panties, which bring out Chloe's Super-Powered Evil Side.
- Ascended Extra: Cess and Laura appeared as background characters, and Cess as the girl caught making out with Kade, later they moved up to queen-bee wannabees.
- The ocelot girl ("close enough!") whom Layla "shanghaied" for a dance returned. Tabitha plays "to nab a boy using the sexy bi-chick trick" again, with Brooke, this time without overcomplicating it.
- Attention Deficit... Ooh, Shiny! Nina is easily distracted by flowers, butterflies or Ace.
- Author Appeal: You can't look at the arc "Big Girls Don't Cry" and not think this.
- Back From the Dead: It looks like this happens to Tiffany after Layla bites her. However, she actually never died: as it turns out, that she was stabbed by an astral sword which causes the victim's spirit to leave their body for a brief time and doesn't harm the body at all.
- Barbie Doll Anatomy: Tiffany Winters' ghost.
- Barely-There Swimwear: Layla's string bikini. Goes from barely there to gone, much to Kade's delight.
- Be Careful What You Wish For: We were introduced to flat chested Chloe, but now she wants to be that way again.
- Bi the Way: Brooke Lynn. Long suspected, now confirmed. Although she hasn't quite figured it out herself at the time...
Brooke: At school, my face got all red when I saw Kade half-naked in bicycle shorts. |
- Kissing Layla seems to have made her realize that she's attracted to her. She's an emotional wreck and confused out of her mind as a result and it probably doesn't help that the entire school probably knows now after Blair uploaded footage of it to his youtube. Later she mentioned her crush on Layla when she thought no one (except Blair) hears.
- Bifauxnen: Brooke Lynn.
Nin |
- Seems to happen often enough to her.
- Hinted at, when a drunk Chloe snuggles up to Brooke in lieu of a boy.
- Dialed up quite a bit here.
- Big Breasts, Big Deal: Chloe belongs to Type 2 (Resentment); when she hears about the gender-changing orb, she runs to find it, and become an A-cup again (she misunderstood Nina, and thinks that the orb's only effect is decreasing breast size).
- Big Sister Instinct: Layla doesn't like it when you mess with Nina. "YOU. MADE. MY. LITTLE. SISTER. CRY!
- Big No: Layla's reaction to Blair uploading the footage of her and Brooke to his YouTube account.
- Blind Without'Em: Chloe, normally. Alchohol apparently changes this.
- Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The local Girl Posse; Melissa (blonde), Jacqui (brunette) and Cerise (redheaded).
- Bottle Fairy:
- Chloe. "Who knew drinking was so wonnnderful!" - it caused her to shift from Moe into full on Horny Devil mode - her eyes fix themselves, she takes on a more seductive stance, and she immediately starts seducing the nearest available people.
- Nina drinks hard when called a big girl and told it has chocolate inside. Brooke is a semi-example, considering how much she wanted the bottle once she saw the brand.
- Brain Bleach: Last link of Amazingly Embarrassing Parents makes Layla look like she needed some. In fact, Chloe and Brooke probably did, too.
- Breast Expansion:
- This is part of succubus puberty. As in 3 cup-sizes in 3 seconds...
- Gender Bender Orb + Blair and his wish for girls equals this.
- Chloe can also do this to any succubi she creates.
- Brick Joke: Remember when Layla said that she didn't want the planned kiss between her and Brooke ending up on Blair's youtube account? Take a wager what happened a couple days later... Given the circumstances it also doubles as Tempting Fate.
- At the School Dance, Girl!Ace wishes that the curse could be broken with a kiss, like in a fairy tale. Brooke decides it's worth a shot... but nothing happens. Turns out that Brooke was just the wrong sex.
- Buffy-Speak: Nina on what she wants to do on a date: "Date stuff... fun datey-type stuff... that date people do on dates for fun and-"
- Burning with Anger: Anger causes Laura's powers to manifest.
- Butt Monkey: Ace. His life has pretty much become a living hell ever since he met Nina. Though, it seems, that since he recovered from the gender bending incident, things are starting to turn around a bit and he may have gained a girlfriend in Brooke.
- Buxom Is Better: After puberty hit Chloe, she became a lot more popular among boys.
- Call Back: Kade probably finds Ace's butt pretty cute now.
- Captain Ersatz: Melissa looks a lot like Ai Ebihara.
- Catgirl:
- Kade is a Cat Boy. Who for a while was a Cat Girl.
- One of Layla's "dates" to the dance is an ocelot girl. Later appeared with Brooke and was introduced as Tabitha.
- Cat Fight:
- Layla and Brooke get into one, with Brooke using Blair as a weapon, much to Blair's delight.
- Layla and Brooke start another one in the bathroom of the Delacroix house, after Layla tries to force Brooke into a makeover.
- Cats Are Mean: Mr. Boodles.
- Cat Smile:
- Nina in the prologue.
- Kade, for obvious reasons.
- Catholic School Girls Rule: Or Private School girls at any rate.
- Censor Steam: Darn PG-13 comics...
- Chew Toy:
- Blair, sometimes literally.
- And poor werewolf-puppy Ace. He just doesn't fare well when Nina is around. Even moreso since the Gender Bender.
- Chick Magnet: Admirers. Kade has many.
- Ace after his recovery from the Gender Bender incident. Even the Alpha Bitch who dismissed him in the past is attracted to him now.
- Chivalrous Pervert: Blair would like you to think he is, but he doesn't quite succeed. As of Chapter 9, he clearly isn't trying anymore.
- Clingy Jealous Girl: Layla here and even earlier with her sister here.
- Clothing Damage: Well, you can't have a good Cat Fight without it...
- Cloudcuckoolander: Nina.
- Her time in Magick Chicks is making it more clear that Tiffany may be one.
- Contrived Coincidence: An astral sword? Really?
- Cool and Unusual Punishment: The gym coach chains Layla to an anchor so she can't cheat on the 100m dash.
- Layla invented a very good comeback when power-drunk Chloe began hitting on Dio.
- Coming Out Story: Brooke is in the middle of her own Played for Laughs one.
- Creepy Doll: Nina has a doll by the name of Blair who is possessed by the spirit of a man. Creepy because it's a girl doll and all the expression are rather girly, but it's a guy in that shell of plastic. That and he's prepared to stake Nina if she develops a taste for blood. Blair can be funny, though, to the audience and the characters he's not harassing at the moment.
- While not enough is shown to confirm or disprove it, fan speculation is that the principal might be a creepy Japanese doll.
- Crossover: With Paranormal Mystery Squad, explaining how Steph got her skull hairpin. It was a present from Layla.
- This, of course has make fans start to theorise the possibility of being canon.
- Cross-Popping Veins: Lampshaded by Layla in the prologue.
- Curtains Match the Window: Several including Brooke, Chloe, Cessily, and Cerise.
- Cute Ghost Girl: Tiffany was this for a while. Bonus points for it being an Out-of-Clothes Experience.
- Cute Little Fangs: Nina in general. Layla here.
- Cessily seems to have some.
- Cute Monster Girl:
- The only reason that the whole cast doesn't count is that some are cute monster boys.
- Ace as a guy has hairy hands due to not quite being done with puberty. Girl!Ace doesn't, due to werewolf girls maturing faster than boys. (... But really because it wouldn't be cute on her.)
- Deadly Prank: Yeah, never tie together the shoes of someone holding a sword. She got better.
- Deathbringer the Adorable: Kujo.
- Defrosting Ice Queen: Hanging out with Tiffany gives Layla a chance to be seen outside of her usual defensive persona, which is pretty universally considered a good thing by the audience. Naturally, none of the regular cast have gotten to see this side of her yet.
- Department of Redundancy Department: Tiffany Winters, the local slayer.
Tiffany: Mother, Father, I, Tiffany Winters, swear that I, Tiffany Winters, will make you proud. |
- Different for Girls: Played with. Poor Ace hasn't yet figured out that some things are really not so different for girls.
- Distracted by My Own Sexy: Ace gets distracted by her own sexy after a makeover in this strip.
|
- Brooke is a victim of this when she wears Ace's old uniform. Too bad that mirror is in the middle of the boy's locker room.
- Distracted by the Sexy:
- The Ninaganger sure reacted strongly to a wet Kade in bike shorts.
- The reaction Ace's father had back when Ace had to write that report during vampire history month.
Ace's Father: (Snatches Ace's textbook away) Vampires!? Is that what they're teaching you at this school!? How dare they - Who's this? |
- Double Standard: It's open to argument whether it's a double standard in play in the arc Big Girls Don't Cry, or whether it's simply that Kade is more interested in Layla than she is in him.
- Based on his time near Layla, Kade would probably prefer it was just Layla, but she's sort of a Tsundere with her affection. She knows he's hers and doesn't feel threatened by other girls. The rare exceptions Layla has are... bad for him.
- Invoked in universe by Cerise's reaction to Jacqui getting upset at Layla for 'using Kade' right after seeing him exit a broom closet with Cess.
- Dumb Blonde: Blair's idea of the perfect girl includes this.
- Laura... isn't all that bright.
- Ear Ache: See Full Name Ultimatum
- Easily Forgiven: Chloe for the things she did under the influence of the Doom Panties, at least by Nina and Brooke.
- Elemental Powers
- An Ice Person: Snow fairy Cessily.
- Playing with Fire: A fair portion of the school. Including ifrit Laura here and here.
- Embarrassing Nickname: Nina insists on calling Ace "Puppy".
- Everything's Better with Chocolate: Nina was born on Easter, and thus, craves for chocolate like regular vampires crave for blood.
- Evil Hand: The French teacher Arman Purvis suffers one of these. It seems to be the arm of an evil hairdresser.
- Evil Laugh: The mirror monster laughs when pranking. It's a very unthreatening example.
- Evil Twin: The chapter "See No Evil" has Nina being trapped in a mirror and having her doppelganger do "very evil things."
- Expressive Accessory: Layla wears a skull hair clip that mirrors her moods.
- Expy: Tiffany Winters>Buffy Summers?
- Face Heel Turn: Chloe with the Doompanties.
- Face Palm: Here and any case of Nina embarrassing Layla. She's also made Ace head-desk at least once.
- Now Chloe has had one after "converting" Laura and Cessily to her side.
- Fan Service:
- I am sure that Blair was not the only one happy at this point, not to mention Chloe's shirt getting ripped earlier.
- There's the scene with Layla in a bikini...
- Ghost Tiffany isn't bad either.
- Kade in bike shorts. And not a lot else...
- Fan Service Pack: A male example. When Ace finally gets transformed back into a boy, he's taller and more filled out than he used to be, (and no furry hands to boot!).
- Fantasy Kitchen Sink
- Feather Boa Constrictor: Brooke nearly always wears her pet snake, Seth, around her neck. Unlike usual examples of the trope, he's about the size of a typical garden snake.
- Fetish Fuel Station Attendant: Chloe is a Moe, Meganekko Horny Devil with A-Cup Angst before her growth spurt that's a blonde, Innocent Fanservice Girl with freckles and a predisposition for getting sexy with minimal drinking. Gender need not apply. She's got a minor Yamato Nadeshiko streak when not drunk. And she was too sexy already to be affected by the Orb.
- Five-Man Band:
- The Hero: Nina
- The Lancer: Layla
- The Big Guy: Ace
- The Smart Guy: Brooke
- The Chick: Chloe Once she gets the Doompanties, though, she becomes the Brainwashed and Crazy Big Bad. of the "Doompanties" arc.
- Fluffy the Terrible: Mr. Boodles, an adorable fluffy cat whose vampire powers let him kill things much larger than himself with what seems like very little effort.
- Fog Feet
- Jim Beard Sprynter, the Ghost Pirate.
- Tiffany Winters while in astral form.
- Foreshadowing: PoorLayla walked into that one.
- For the Evulz: The mirror monster.
- Formally-Named Pet: Mr. Boodles.
- Four-Temperament Ensemble:
- Sanguine (blood): Nina
- Choleric (yellow bile): Layla
- Melancholic (black bile): Chloe
- Phlegmatic (phlegm): Brooke
- Freaky Friday Flip: Layla and Nina.
- Friendly Enemy: Tiffany really really means to be hunting Layla, but her airheaded Les Yay seems to be interfering.
- Friendly Neighborhood Vampire: Especially Nina, who prefers chocolate over blood, but the rest of her family also qualifies since none of their human victims are seriously harmed.
- Full Name Ultimatum: Layla Alucardia Delacroix!
- Fully Fed Very Well On The Dark Side: Cess and Laura after using Ash to fully fill up on power.
- Fundraiser Carnival: The setting for the Kissing Booth bonus story in the print edition.
- Funny Background Event: There have been others, but I think panel 1 here takes the prize.
- Fur Against Fang: Although there does seem to be an in-universe rivalry between vampires and werewolves, Nina doesn't seem to care about it, nor her family: Layla is equally rude to everyone, Maria is equally flirty with everyone. Nina has a very personal theory about the feud.
- Gag Penis: Blair's imagined male Chloe.
- Gender Bender: Thanks to a magical orb that can change sexes. Hilarity ensues when Blair gets his hands on it.
- Attractive Bent Gender: Happens to a lot of guys in the arc "Big Girls Don't Cry", Case in point: panel 2. And in that same strip, even Kade admits to thinking this. The attractive part at least, since he doesn't know about the other part. There are probably some female fans that could say Nina (or would it be Nino, now?) fits this trope as well.
- Jacqui actually casts a spell to invoke this.It works.
- A subversion of this trope turns out to be the way to destroy/counteract the Artifact of Doom.
- Mostly.
- Stupid sexy fem Ace!
- Brooke in Ace's old uniform. In a Wholesome Crossdresser sort of way. To Ace.
- First Law of Gender Bending: Because he (or she) was out of range of the orb when it reverted those affected by it,Ace is still a girl, even after The Orb of Tiresias changed everyone else back. Lasted about a year, real time, until it got transferred to Kade.
- Second Law of Gender Bending: There have been a few scenes to suggest that, while still interested in becoming a boy again, Ace may have enjoyed being a girl more that she let on. See Distracted by My Own Sexy above and Not So Different below.
- Third Law of Gender Bending: Played completely straight by Nina, Ace and Kade post gender-swap. After all, it was not just "turn into girls" but bimbofication curse to begin with.
"I don't wanna be a girl! I liked being a boy!... And my clothes don't fiiiiiiiiit!" |
- The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Played with by Professor Twigitt: Ace's new heterosexual attraction to boys? Genetic, apparently. Ace's equally new desire to go shopping for cute clothes? "I've never had those urges. That's just you."
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Apparently, the orb of Tiresias doesn't actually change anyone's hair, so when it's done its work there's a few guys with very girly hair and a lot of girls with very boyish hair.
- Genki Girl: Nina.
- Genre Blindness: For being a Slayer, Tiffany has little idea of how one becomes a vampire. Or what she does in general (like what sort of a sword she grabbed).
- Genre Savvy: Though not in the way that could help.
Tiffany: Vengeance shall be mine! Wait... Not "vengeance"... What's the one heroes get? Oh right. Justice shall be done! |
- Ghost Pirate: Jim Beard Sprynter, the gym coach.
- Gilligan Cut: "No! My hair! I won't change! I won't change! I won't--" *cue cheer leading*
- If you want the original, it's in the extras page. just go to the part about "The strip of October 8th, 2010"
- Girl-On-Girl Is Hot: When the orb turns people into Blair's ideal woman, it doesn't take them long to start to make out with each other.
- It also doesn't take long for people to complain and get that part removed. Though it should be noted that they weren't complaining about the girl on girl. They just didn't like that it happened because of mind control
- Gilligan Cut, above, has a link to the original version.
- Used hilariously in the print volume's bonus story, Kissing Booth.
- Invoked, as the logical result of this having happened a few seconds later...
- Mrs. Delacroix describing her 'phase' sounds pretty hot. That little number was provoked with this moment of girl-on-girl.
- Layla must just have that effect on people...
- Girl Posse: Melissa's coven, Jacqui and Cerise.
- Girlish Pigtails: Brooke wore her hair like that when she was a little girl, as shown in flashbacks.
- Girls Have Cooties: Here, Boys Have Cooties - when Nina first meets Ace, he's in wolf form; she hugs him, then, when he changes into a boy, she slaps him for giving her cooties.
- The Glomp: Nina's modus operandi. Blair could be counted as well, albeit for different reasons.
- Glowing Eyes of Doom: Accentuated Nina's Slasher Smile nicely, though that could have just been Ace's imagination going wild.
- Goofy Print Underwear: Chloe
- Grand Theft Me: Nina switches her body with Layla's in order to get, a) Layla's boobs, and b) Kade.
- G-Rated Drug: Succubus blood is this to vampires.
- Hand or Object Underwear: Needed if your temper tantrum involves bursting into flames, and your outfit isn't fireproof.
- Have I Mentioned That I Am Heterosexual Today: Layla, justified by her being Mistaken for Gay.
- Have I Mentioned I Am Sexually Active Today?: A guest strip features Cess and Laura boasting about all the sex they had with their boyfriends. Layla says she can decide which one is telling the truth by tasting their blood, because "virgin blood tastes especially sweet". When she reveals that she lied about that, the girls both break down crying, admitting that they don't even have boyfriends.
- Heh, Heh, You Said "X": When Brooke and Chloe talk about Diodore:
Brooke: I saw you checking out his butt! |
- Hidden Depths: Brooke's issues with sexuality and Layla's capacity to be understanding. To Brooke of all people!
- There suddenly seems to be a lot more to Blair, Nina, or (probably) both.
- If Layla stuck like this indefinitely, he'd really need that thing. She can be mean and devious when she doesn't have such a good reason.
- There suddenly seems to be a lot more to Blair, Nina, or (probably) both.
- Horned Humanoid: Our resident Horny Devil, Chloe, is a horned devil as well.
- Horny Devils: In the form of an insecure, freckled, Moe Meganekko teenage succubus.
- Hot for Student: Arman appearently has a thing for Layla.
- Hot Mom:
- Mrs. Maria Delacroix. She has had 13 kids. Doesn't look like it.
- Adora Love, Chloe's mother.
- Human Shield: Cerise pushes Melissa into the gender-changing beam, to prevent it from hitting her.
Cerise: Sorry! Panicked! <thought ballon: Better you than me.> |
- Idiot Ball:
- Tiffany whenever she drops the Smart Ball. For example, forgetting vampires and sun don't mix right after helping solve the Evil Twin issue. She blames it on blood loss.
- The Orb of Tiresias becomes a literal Idiot Ball when Blair uses it to turn everybody into empty-headed bimbos.
- I Kiss Your Hand: Diodore does it for Layla.
- Imagine Spot: Tiffany has one before confronting her parents.
- I'm Not Pretty: When introduced, Chloe considered herself okay by normal standards, but not pretty enough by succubus standards. Even after her growth spurt, she called herself "quite plain", despite having a legion of admirers.
- Improbably-Female Cast: There's only two main characters of note who are male, and one of them was turned into a girl. And then switched genders with the other guy.
- Incorruptible Pure Pureness: Chloe, while under the influce of the Doom Panties, seems to see Nina as this to the point where even considering using her corrupting magic on her Chloe physically ill. That said, there are hints that Chloe's impression is not as accurate as anybody would like.
- Inherently Funny Words: "Begonias" according to DaveZero.
- Innocent Inaccurate: Nina's report on an ancient vampire queen.
- Innocent Innuendo: Nina is too innocent for her own good.
Nina: D'you kiss the snake too? |
- Also:
- Insistent Terminology: Ace? Werewolf? Puppy. Nina's stubborn like that. Even when their genders were reversed.
- Instant Humiliation - Just Add YouTube: Though the amount of actual humiliation has let to be determained.
- Instant Waking Skills: Brooke demonstrates these when Layla tries to drink from her (though it's possible that she faked sleep).
- I See London: Nina's Mirror Monster pantses Chloe during gym class.
- Is There a Doctor In the House?: When Chloe thinks she's attacked by a snake, Nina shouts: "Is there a herpetologist in the house?"
- It Got Worse: Pretty much a rule for Chapter 9.
- It Makes Sense in Context: Don't bother trying to explain a storyline to someone who's never read the comic. You'll just sound stupid.
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: Layla has many flaws and can be rather selfish, but she also has some moments of actual kindness and she truly cares for her sister.
- Kick the Dog: Then again...
- Kiss of the Vampire:
- Tiffany seems to enjoy it.
- So does Chloe. Post-alcohol.
- Yep, this trope is in full effect.
- Killer Rabbit: Mr. Boodles in general, Kujo (a Bichon Frise) , to Blair.
- Kryptonite Is Everywhere: When Tiffany thinks she became a vampire, here.
- Ladykiller in Love: "Sure thing, Layla!" Ouch, Kade
- Lame Comeback:
Ace: That doesn't make sense. |
- Lap Pillow: Gender-swapped Ace holds Kade's head in her lap after Layla knocked him out. Though Kade's other eye is opened when we see it...
- Large Ham:
- Tiffany Winters' monologues.
- Layla Loves Blondes Her boyfriend Kade Whiteclaw. Some random victims: here here and even: Tiffany Winters, Melissa Hellrune, Chloe, Laura and a guest artist
- Last-Second Word Swap:
Cess: Wouldn't it be neat if we became the school's new alpha females? |
- Lizard Folk: The twin bullies, Lax and Jux.
- Long-Haired Pretty Boy: Kade.
- Look Behind You!: Brooke distracting Chloe: Is that a shirtless Robert Pattinson poster behind you?
- Love Is in the Air: Another part of succubus puberty.
- Love Letter Lunacy: Ace delivers a note to Kade from Nina. Naturally, Kade thinks it's from him.
- Mad Scientist: She's kidding. Right?
- Magic Pants: Ace, the werewolf, seems to be able to slide out of his clothes, leaving them intact (and him naked afterward). Brooke Lynn averts this trope in that she loses her panties, but somehow she retained her footwear when she reverted. Considering that said undies ended up in Blair's plastic fingers, that aversion is probably to provide for the Rule of Funny.
- Probably she just slipped her footwear back on quickly and forgot about her panties. Bare feet are a lot more immediately noticeable than bare . . . ahem.
- Ace's shirt does rip the first time we see him transform, but it looks more like he did it himself in a fit of passion.
- The Magnificent: King Lupus the Wolfhearted.
- Malicious Slander: Layla is in trouble, if the previous page is any indication.
- Subverted. The plan was to make her less popular.
- Massive Numbered Siblings: Maria Delacroix stated that she raised 13 kids. However, we only see Layla and Nina.
- Meaningful Name: Throughout.
- Chloe Love (Succubus). Her mother's name is Adora. Other succubi appeared in Dangerously Chloe, whose last names include Devotion (guess what) and Rapture (sort of fits, too).
- Kade Whiteclaw (cat boy)
- Ace Wolfhart (werewolf)
- Melissa Hellrune (witch)
- Layla Alucardia Delacroix (vampire).
- The Delacroix's family name is also meaningful in an ironic way: it translates to 'of the cross'.
- Evil Hand Arman Purvis, with the evil Arm.
- Jim Beard Sprynter, who is a pirate and coaches track.
- Tiffany Winters acts, looks like, and does the same job as another girl whose last name is a season.
- You won't convince me Blair, the possessed doll, isn't named after Linda Blair of The Exorcist fame.
- All we need now is to discover that Brooke Lynn is from New York and we'll have pretty much all the main cast (though it's possible that her first name is a more subtle than usual pun, given that Melusine are traditionally supposed to be river creatures).
- Miss Futakuchi, the history teacher, based on the Japanese Futakuchi-onna myths.
- Meganekko: Chloe
- The Mind Is a Plaything of the Body: Ace is still a girl and is not liking it. S/he sarcastically suggests to Brooke that maybe they could turn him/her back to a boy if they kiss. They try, it doesn't work, and Ace realizes something rather shocking... Ace felt absolutely nothing when kissing Brooke, which makes him/her realize that s/he might be gay. Or straight, since Ace is a girl now.
- Both Nina and Layla discovered this thanks to the Freaky Friday Flip Nina caused, Nina had to deal with blood cravings while inside Layla's body and Layla found herself wanting chocolate inside of Nina's body.
- Mirror Monster: The entire "See No Evil" chapter.
- Mismatched Eyes: Kade has a blue right eye and a yellow left eye.
- Mistaken for Gay: Layla after kissing Brooke.
- Modesty Towel: Appears several times after shower scenes.
- Moment Killer: Layla here with Brooke.
- Later, when they actually kiss, the moment is ruined by Nina.
- Mood Whiplash: Oh look, Nina's doppelganger is trying to be evil, but the best she can come up with are childish pranks, isn't she so cute? Oh look, that Tiffany girl is dead now.
- Most Definitely Not a Villain: Nina-in-Layla's-Body. "I'm Layla! And I'm being bossy!"
- Ms. Fanservice: Chloe Love, though Layla seems to be trying to compete.
- Mundane Utility: As seen here, just a perk of vampire friends...
- My Instincts Are Showing:
- Kade's reaction to Ace is an example.
- Brooke invoked it quite intentionally.
- Nina as a chocolate-loving vampire has her instincts rather... haywire.
- Brooke and Skittles. Methinks that mouse was trying to avoid those instincts.
- Crackers vs. Kade scene.
- Naked People Are Funny: The reactions make the joke better quick.
- Names to Run Away From Really Fast: Melissa Hellrune — although she's mostly an Alpha Bitch with her eye on social advancement than anything else. Even so, the Orb was something she brought and had the potential to end all life on Earth, and she's only a student witch!
- Nerd Glasses: Arman Purvis
- The Nicknamer: Layla. She calls Brooke "Serpentor", Chloe "Baroness", or "Blondie", and Ace "dog" or "Mutt". Of course, the last was well after her little sister dubbed him "Puppy!"
- No Except Yes: Layla acts like she was dumped, but is adamant about having done the dumping.
- Not So Different:
- Female Ace is sorta glad that he/she doesn't have to compete with other men about who has the "biggest". This said to flat chested Brooke. The focus may change, but Bigger Is Better regardless.
- Layla and Tiffany's love of Valcross.
- Not What It Looks Like:
- Layla tries to use the excuse (for a non-sexual situation) with limited success.
- And there was a prefectly non-sexual reason the morning after Mama Delacroix caught her nekkid with Layla, Brooke was complaining about a bite on her inner thigh...
- This is not the kind of necking that it appears to be.
- Layla and Brooke try this when Nina catches them making out. Unfortunately, their excuses are conflicting.
- Odd-Shaped Panel
- Oh Crap: Brooke can see where this is going...
- Oh My Gods: A few times.
- Chloe says "Oh, sweet Lilith..." when she thinks she's being attacked by Seth (Lilith is a succubus-like being in Jewish mythology).
- Layla says things like "For Dracula's sake" and "in the Impaler's name".
- Older Than They Look: Or act. Nina is 14.
- As a point of comparison, in a flashback we see Brooke (who is the same age) acting in a manner similar to Nina's everyday behavior — on her sixth birthday. Brooke even called Nina kiddo once. And covered her ears as Mrs. Delacroix reminisced about her "phase" with Chloe's mother.
- Mrs. Delacroix, thanks to being a vampire.
- Only a Flesh Wound: Here.
- Open-Minded Parent:
- Ace's father always wanted a daughter.
- Mrs. Delacroix and "phases" the girls go through. Thanks Mom!
- Our Vampires Are Different:
- They can be born of vampire parents and grow up, they can see themselves in mirrors and Nina was born on Easter, and thus feeds on chocolate. No word yet on how/if they turn people though.
- Tiffany thought she got turned from a bite, but this was quickly disproved.
- Also, vampires can apparently feed on any living being with blood. Succubus blood tastes truly amazing, and melusine blood, besides being cold or room-temperature, tastes "exotic".
- Our Werewolves Are Different: And, apparently, can have furry hands until after puberty.
- Out-of-Clothes Experience: When a would-be vampire hunter stabs herself accidentally, she takes this form as a ghost. Naturally, blue Barbie Doll Anatomy is used.
- Panty Thief: Blair.
- Pie in the Face: Nina's doppelganger to Kade.
- Pillow Fight: Layla and Brooke get into one at Nina's slumber party.
- Planet Eris: Monsters, ghosts, vampires, werewolves, Snake People... everyday part of life.
- Playing Possum: Kade uses a meta-example for more time in (female) Ace's lap.
- Pointy Ears: Chloe, Cessily
- Poke the Poodle: The mirror version of Nina can't do much more evil than children's pranks and a pie to Kade's face. And the one time her Doppelganger does (accidentally) succeed in doing something genuinely evil she's overwhelmed with remorse seconds later.
- Power Glows: When Blair gets frustrated with the slow transformation rate of the Orb of Tiresias, he starts this with the shout of "ARRR! I want more girls NOW!" Accompanied by Sucking-In Lines and Power Floats.
Blair: GIRLS! Not DISCO! |
- Power Perversion Potential: The Orb of Tiresias was full of it, and witchcraft in general likely applies.
- Practice Kiss: This almost happens in this strip. And now its actually happened. Now only time will tell if it goes anywhere.
- Prehensile Hair: Miss Futakuchi, the history teacher, based on the Japanese Futakuchi-onna myths.
- Princess Phase: When Nina gets drunk, she declares herself to be a princess.
- Punny Name: Special mention goes to Arman Purvis (read the comic and you'll get it), but the best is taken by the vampire family with the French surname meaning "of the Cross"! Not to mention Brooke Lynn.
- Puppy Dog Eyes: Nina, Ace even calls her out for it.
- Ace, quite appropriately.
- Pyrrhic Villainy: The aftermath the "Operation: Breakup" fiasco cost the Hellrune Coven their status as the "Queen Bees" of Charybdis Heights and all the benefits going with said status after the headmistress sends them to Artemis Academy. (And the headmistress thought expelling the Coven was letting them off TOO EASY.) And Mel sees that Kade got gender-bent (and she has to protect Ash from Kade), though it does give her a momentary Imagine Spot where she sees herself as his girlfriend IF she can undo the Orb of Tiresias' magic.
- Really Gets Around: Considering he walked up to his girlfriend, covered in the lipstick from the girl he just made out with, Kade may apply.
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Eugene Delacroix. According to Nina he's older than the French romantic painter of that name, who was born in 1798.
- Rebus Bubble: Nina's reaction to Ace transforming the first time. Can be seen in Magic Pants. And Nina seeing Ace here.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Ifrit Laura and snow fairy Cessily seem to be operating in this manner.
- Reluctant Monster: Brooke seems to dislike her monster form, and is a vegetarian, despite being carnivorus by nature.
- Retcon: The last panel of the page posted on the 8th October originally featured the aged up Nina and the blondified Brooke kissing. Due to complaints on the forums the panel was changed two days later.
- Orwellian Retcon: Near the end of Brooke's introduction, a line by Blair about her lost underwear was altered by the writers who felt it pushed the PG-13 border to far.
- Reptiles Are Abhorrent: Subverted with Brooke, but played straight with the lizard twins Lax and Jux, the school bullies... Though as far as said bullies are concerned played straight with Brooke; see My Instincts Are Showing for details.
- Required Spinoff Crossover: A character, rather than a group. Our local slayer attends the school focused on in Magick Chicks and has shown up.
- We now have a proper crossover. Layla has shown up in Magick Chicks during a story arc focusing on Tiffany, while Mellisa and Faith crossover into Eerie Cuties during a story line wherre Kade calls Mellisa for a date.
- Revenge
- Sacred First Kiss: Nina was temporarily sad about it.
- Say It with Hearts: "I LOVE YOU" "Is it day yet?" "I'll come with you!" Y'know what, Nina and Blair. That should suffice. Mostly. Ugh. Those being sweet.
- Saying Sound Effects Out Loud: "Yoink!"
- Scaled Up: Completely subverted when Brooke, one of the good guys, transformed into a giant serpent(oid)/Gorgon to scare a pair of bullies. Although she seems to be embarrassed of this form. Brooke is a Melusine, a race apparently based on a nymph who apparently was cursed to turn into part snake occasionally and, due to it being a curse rather than a natural facet, got a promise from her human husband never to peek on her at those times. When he did, she forgave him (her own curse was gained when she tried to punish her father for a similar transgression against her mother...mother was not amused with the disrespect she showed her father) until he called her a "serpent" in public at which point she turned into a dragon, left him some parting gift and flew away.
- Scary Shiny Glasses: Nina in this strip, even though she isn't wearing glasses.
- Schoolgirl Lesbians:
- Mrs. Delcroix says that she and Chloe's mom were this.
- Confirmed as of 1/26/2011. And now she assumes that Brooke and Layla are now too.
- Nina would agree...
- Sealed Evil in a Can: The Doom Panties which Chloe's mother said were meant to be for her but her body isn't ready for them yet. Putting then on prematurely makes Chloe a tad evil.
- Sealed Evil in a Teddy Bear - Blair. Once, he actually disguises himself as a teddy bear.
- Selective Obliviousness: Melissa and Jacqui's reactions to Layla being justifiably annoyed with Kade. Noticed by Cerise in Double Standard.
- She Cleans Up Nicely - Layla wasn't ugly to begin with, but when Chloe gets done doing a very brief makeover... wow.
- Shipper on Deck: Look like the other students are quite supportive of the idea of Layla and Brooke. ...At least the other girls are.
- Shirtless Scene: They happen.
- Shout-Out:
- The Delacroix's dog is called Kujo, a reference to Stephen King's Cujo.
- The gender-changing orb is called the "Orb of Tiresias". Tiresias is a famous seer from Greek mythology, who among some other misadventures once was transformed into a woman for seven years.
- The words in Jacqui's spell "Alavar Darsana Valorum" are the names of minor Star Wars characters.
- The appearances of the witches could be a shoutout to the three girls from The Craft.
- And the three witches could be a shoutout to the famous witches in Macbeth.
- Blair's head spinning around in his first appearance is probably a shoutout to Linda Blair's famous scene of the same sort in The Exorcist.
- Does Blair referencing Linda Blair's thing make Blair's name a Punny Name?
- Jeffrey the school janitor wears a hockey mask like Jason Voorhees (but he's a lot nicer than Jason).
- Layla adressed Chloe and Brooke as Baroness and Serpentor.
- Layla's middle name is Alucardia, a feminine form of Alucard, which is Dracula backwards (used several times in vampire fiction as an alias for vampires).
- Student names in Miss Futakuchi's class: Chaney, Karloff, Barker and King.
- In this page, We are introuduced to Layla's childhood friend, Diodore Renoir, who asks her to call him Dio. Hmmm...A vampire called Dio? Where have we seen this before?
- That could just be a coincidence, right? Until this strip when we find out that her dog Kujo's nickname is "Jojo".
- There is also the part where Nina says Ebil which is a word used by Zorbak
- Professor Wilhelmina Twigitt may have something to do with Ms.Frizzle from The Magic School Bus
- Shower Scene: Several, and catering to the Estrogen Brigade as well as the typical Fan Service. Though it is PG-13 level.
- Show Within a Show: Recently it was revealed that Eerie Cuties (and likely Magick Chicks as well) exist as a comic (and possibly other mediums) within the Ménage à 3 universe.
- Shrinking Violet: Chloe, especially early on; Brooke, due to sexual identity issues.
- Skunk Stripe: Mrs. Delacroix has it.
- Slap Slap Kiss: Kade seems to like when Layla shows claws.
- Slasher Smile: Nina, of all people.
- Slippery Swimsuit: A wave knocks off Layla's bikini top.
- Slumber Party: Nina invites Chloe and Brooke to one.
- Small Reference Pools: Surprisingly averted, in terms of monsters and mythology. We have your standard vampires, werewolves, succubi, etc, but then we have more obscure creatures, like the melusine and the just plain creepy Futakuchi-onna.
- Snake People: Brooke is a Melusine.
- Sneeze of Doom: Chloe unleashes one. Hilarity Ensues.
- Something Else Also Rises: Kade's cat ears pop out when he sees Layla topless.
- Spanner in the Works: Blair, twice. His stealing the Orb Of Tiresias turns "Operation: Break Up" into a full-fledged fiasco, and he foils Chloe when Layla tells him the Doompanties are the rarest panties in the universe.
- Spit Take
- Squirrels in My Pants: Brooke's pet snake Seth once slipped in Chloe's clothes after she startled him. He then came out of her cleavage, surrounded by Heart Symbols.
- Sssssnaketalk: Brooke's monster form.
- Stalker with a Crush: Tiffany is pursuing Layla, allegedly with the intent to stake her and get revenge for her earlier humiliation. It becomes increasingly obvious that Tiffany has a crush on Layla, which is really starting to get in the way of the vampire hunting.
- The Starscream: Suddenly, Cerise pushing Melissa into a blast from the Orb of Tiresias makes a bit more sense.
- Stereo Fibbing: Layla and Brooke trying to explain to Nina why they were kissing.
- Stylistic Suck: Nina's history essay.
- Sugar and Ice Personality:
- Sweet Tooth: Nina appearently eats nothing but chocolate.
- Taking the Bullet: Nina does it for Ace when Blair tries to use the gender-changing orb on him. And then Blair still manages to hit Ace when he's not looking.
- Talk Like a Pirate: Jim Beard Sprynter, the Ghost Pirate gym coach.
- Tears of Blood: Nina says that "virgins shed tears of blood" during the rule of the vampire queen.
- Teens Are Flawed: Pretty much the entire cast shows flaws all around (since the story exploits them for Rule of Funny), some more than others.
- Tempting Fate: See Brick joke above.
- Terrible Trios / THREE-Bad Band: There are two Terrible Trios who have at least two members who have or share two Five-Bad Band roles.
- Configuration 1: The Hellrune Coven (until they are spun off into Magick Chicks after the "Orb of Tiresias" fiasco):
- The Big Bad: Melissa
- The Dragon: Cerise
- The Brute: Jacqui, in a "useful-but-brainless" way.
- The Evil Genius: Melissa had the initial plan, then Jacqui had her glamours.
- The Dark Chick: Cerise, again
- Configuration 2: The "War Games" Trio
- The Big Bad: Cessily
- The Dragon: Laura
- The Brute: Laura, again
- The Evil Genius: Cessily, again
- The Dark Chick: Chloe, who was also an Unwitting Pawn as Cessily and Laura wanted to become the Alpha Bitches once the Hellrune Coven are gone.
- Configuration 3: The Succubi Trio during "The Doompanties" arc
- The Big Bad: Chloe once she wears the Doompanties and Layla uses her mind control to cause Chloe to humiliate herself in front of Dio; this speeds Chloe's Sliding Down the Slippery Slope as she becomes determined to strip Layla of EVERYTHING she has after it.
- The Dragon: Cessily.
- The Brute: Laura and Cessily share this, especially with Ash around.
- The Evil Genius: Chloe, though initially, Cessily wanted to use an exploding bra
- The Dark Chick: Laura
- Configuration 1: The Hellrune Coven (until they are spun off into Magick Chicks after the "Orb of Tiresias" fiasco):
- Tertiary Sexual Characteristics: Eyelashes.
- Testosterone Poisoning: Ash, in his Crossover Cameo from Magick Chicks. After the girls "feed" off of his energy, though, he only managed to just get off "needing half a dozen Angus Burgers" instead of dying.
- Third Person Person: Tiffany, when she is in 'slayer' mode.
- This Is Gonna Suck:
- Brooke almost saved Ace.
- And then that is Subverted when Layla got the makeover. Followed by Ace getting a makeover anyway.
- Throw the Dog a Bone: Girl!Ace and Brooke's burgeoning friendship and sweet chemistry together have shades of this.
- *facepalm*
- And now that Ace is a boy again, it looks as though he's going to act on it.
- Too Much Information: Chloe, Layla and Brooke feel that way about Mrs. Delacroix revealing her history with Chloe's mother. Brooke even covers Nina's ears.
- Later, Adora herself, mentioning extra possibilities for "fun grown-up games". Did we ever see such round eyes on Chloe?
- Trademark Favorite Food: Chocolate to Nina. It's all she eats.
- Troubled Fetal Position: Ace, after spotting Nina once too many.
- Tsundere: Layla
- Unwanted Harem: Layla ends up going to the dance with a bunch of girls.
- Valley Girl: The orb, bonded with Blair's mind, turns everyone into Valley Girls.
- Blonde, make-out fighting valley girls with commonly open shirts and new assets that obey Blair's every wish. And, when Nina joins them, she grew.
- Van Helsing Hate Crimes: Tiffany wants to slay the vampires and other monsters in the school, because she doesn't know that they're harmless.
- Except for this one...
- Vein-O-Vision: After Layla bit Chloe, she started seeing her like this. Though, Layla was starving at the time.
- Visible Silence: Layla, Brooke, and Chloe's reaction to Mrs. Delacroix describing her 'phase' to the girls.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: If Brooke and Layla can be considered friends, this is probably the sort.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: The characters with a monster form seem to be able to use traits of the form without fully transforming.
- Adult succubi have the rare age-shifting power, and can change their age to whatever they think they need to be.
Adora: You can be a 40-year old MILF, an adorable 9-year old, or a 25-year old grad student with perky C-cups. |
- Vomit Discretion Shot: When Nina throws up after drinking for the first time.
- Wardrobe Malfunction: Deliberately invoked by Chloe as a bait for Blair.
- What Do You Mean It's Not Heinous?: When the evil spirit of the mirror steals Nina's body to unleash her evil on the world. However, seeing as it's Nina she's in, all she can manage are lame practical jokes.
- When the Planets Align: A vampire born on the first Sunday after the first full moon after the vernal equinox (popularly known as Easter) does not drink blood.
- However, the above explanation is not necessary true, as some characters (including the aforementioned vampire) have complained that it make no sense and there is hint that there is more to it.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy: Kade
- Wholesome Crossdresser: Looking good in that uniform.
- With Friends Like These...:
- With Great Power Comes Great Insanity: Chloe got a little power-drunk when her succubus powers were enhanced.
- Yandere: Layla is violent when she's unhappy romantically.
- Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe: A minor example: "Oh my beloved Chloe... wherefore art thou?"
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Nina's hair is purple and Brooke's is green. Cessily has blue hair, and powers to match.
- Word of God is that Cerise was going to have hair that changed color on a regular basis due to a spell she cast, but it never got used before the strip went black and white and may be a lost trait.
- Zettai Ryouiki: The uniforms for Charybdis Heights have this at Class-C.
- Zombie Apocalypse: Okay, they are not zombies, but boys under the influence of an overdose of Succubus pheromones, but that doesn't stop them from invoking every Zombie Apocalypse trope in the book.
