A spinoff from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic, Equestria Girls, also referred to as EG, forms part of "Generation 4" the My Little Pony franchise, alongside its parent series and Pony Life.

A High School AU, Equestria Girls is a canon Alternate Universe to the mainline Friendship is Magic series, focusing on human counterparts of the Mane 6, referred to as the "Humane 6" by the fans, attending Canterlot High School as they deal with Equestrian magic leaking into their universe.

Starting sometime between FiM‍'‍s third and fourth seasons, the first Equestria Girls movie opened on Sunset Shimmer, Celestia's student before Twilight since turned to evil, stealing Twilight's Element of Magic, fleeing through a magic portal to another realm. With a cosmic deadline fast approaching that will make the portal inaccessible for two years, Twilight and Spike follow her through, being turned into a human and a dog respectively. Meeting up with human versions of their friends, the two manage to get the Element back and prompt a Heel Face Turn from Sunset who decides to stay and help the human world.

From thereon out, the saga largely follows Sunset Shimmer and her attempts to navigate the human world and make amends, having to deal with high school drama, more Equestrian rogues and a curious human girl named Twilight Sparkle...

Equestria Girls was placed on hiatus in November of 2019, following Holidays Unwrapped. Though Word of God has said that this is not a Grand Finale, no further plans for EG have been announced following My Little Pony: A New Generation, the start of Generation 5.

Tropes used in Equestria Girls include:
  • A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far Far Away: Per Word of God, wherever in the Multiverse the show takes places, it's not on any version of Earth.
  • Alternate Self: The Humane 6 to the Mane 6. They're not quite the same people, Human!Rainbow Dash is a tad more selfish and competitive for example, but they're close enough. Though Sunset's native counterpart in the human world goes conspicuously unmentioned.
  • Adaptational Heroism:
    • Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon never bully anyone.
    • Camp Everfree is a mundane and peaceful summer camp, as opposed to the "dark and scary" Everfree Forest
    • Human Luna is fully heroic and never became Nightmare Moon.
  • Adaptational Villainy:
    • Human Filty Rich is the secondary villain of Legend of Everfree.
    • Human Twilight eventually becomes a demon called Midnight Sparkle (and she is eventually turned back to normal), something that never happened to Pony Twilight.
    • Crystal Prep is full of bullying students and an emotionally-abusive principal, as opposed to the peaceful and prosperous Crystal Empire.
  • Alternate Universe: The Spin-Off takes place in one, one where all the characters are human.
  • Baleful Polymorph: Coming into the other reality turns the people of Equestria into a likeness of their counterpart, costing them their magic powers.
  • Barrier Warrior: The Geode of Generosity gives this to Human Rarity.
  • Battle of the Bands: Rainbow Rocks.
  • Decomposite Character:
    • While there is a Luna and a Celestia, it's Human Twilight who becomes Midnight Sparkle, the local equivalent of Nightmare Moon, with Sunset Shimmer becoming increasingly Celestia-like in her confrontation of Midnight Sparkle.
    • While there is a native Twilight, and the Pony Twilight is a semi-recurring character, most of the things Pony Twilight is known for (her role as leader of the Human Seven, her Adorkable moments, her tendency to act without thinking and letting her emotions get the better of her) go to Sunset Shimmer.
  • Enthralling Siren: The main villains of Rainbow Rocks.
  • Groundhog Day Loop: Sunset's Backstage Pass
  • Heel-Face Turn: Most villains, with Principal Cinch and the Sirens being the only notable exceptions.
  • Human-Focused Adaptation
  • Humanity Ensues: Passing through the portal turns one into what they would look life if they were born in that universe. Ponies become human (and vice versa) while dragons become dogs.
  • Merchandise-Driven
  • Mind Over Matter: The Geode of Magic gives Human Twilight telekinesis, and the Geode of Empathy gives Sunset Shimmer telepathy.
  • No Antagonist: Spring Breakdown is the only movie with this trope.
  • The Power of Rock: Rainbow Rocks.
  • Reality Ensues: As Principal Cinch and the Shadowbolts discover the very hard way, trying to use an energy source you just find out it exists is, at best, a disaster waiting to happen.
  • Remember the New Guy?: There was no hint in any of FiM‍'‍s first three seasons that Princess Celestia had had a student before Twilight Sparkle.
  • Speaks Fluent Animal/The Beast Master: The Geode of Kindness gives this to Human Fluttershy.
  • Super Speed: The Geode of Loyalty gives this to Human Rainbow Dash.
  • Super Strength: The Geode of Honesty gives this to Human Applejack.
  • One-Winged Angel: Most villains go through this, the notable exception being Wallflower Blush and Post-Crush.
