As the series progresses, the Fairy Tail guild sees a number of new recruits (beware, spoilers abound).
Juvia Lockser[]
Magic/Weapons: Water Magic, Unison Raid
Guild Mark: Above left thigh (blue)
Juvia is the former Water Magic specialist of Phantom Lord's Element 4 who can use her powers to turn her entire body into liquid, and to create and manipulate water as she chooses. She grew up alone and unloved as a child since she always brought rain wherever she went. Upon meeting Gray Fullbuster during the war with Fairy Tail, she falls madly in love with him and joins his guild to pursue his affections following Phantom Lord's demise. Though her efforts are often ignored at best and rejected at worst, she slowly but surely becomes one of Gray's dearest companions.
Voiced by: Mai Nakahara (Japanese) and Brina Palencia (English) |
Juvia is the former Water Magic specialist of Phantom Lord's Element 4 who can use her powers to turn her entire body into liquid, and to create and manipulate water as she chooses. She grew up alone and unloved as a child since she always brought rain wherever she went. Upon meeting Gray Fullbuster during the war with Fairy Tail, she falls madly in love with him and joins his guild to pursue his affections following Phantom Lord's demise. Though her efforts are often ignored at best and rejected at worst, she slowly but surely becomes one of Gray's dearest companions.
Abhorrent Admirer: To Gray. While she is a very attractive young woman, Juvia's forward behavior does more to repel than attract him to her. She slowly grows out of this trope once Gray's feelings for her begin to show later in the series.
Accent Adaptation: The Tagalog and Animax English dubs give her a French accent.
Action Girl
Affectionate Nickname: In the original dub, Juvia refers to Gray with the honorific, "sama", expressing her deep admiration for him. In the dub version, she usually refers to him by several nicknames including "darling," "my love," and "my beloved."
All Love Is Unrequited: Her affections for Gray are largely ignored, first because he is Oblivious to Love, and later because her damnedest efforts to change that become annoying.
It's gradually subverted by the end of the Tartaros arc, however, when he thanks and apologizes to her for being forced to kill the necromancer who was controlling his dead father. After that, they begin living together comfortably and are driven to a mutual (attempted) Heroic Suicide in the Alvarez Empire arc when compelled to fight each other. By the beginning of the 100 Year Quest, Gray admits to loving her.
Always with You: She sacrifices herself to save Gray, using her magic to give him a blood transfusion, stating that she'll live on inside of him. It's not very comforting for Gray, who doesn't realize that Juvia pulled through with Wendy's help.
Anime Hair: Her introductory hairstyle has her hair curled into rings around the back of her head. Her later hairstyles drop this entirely.
Antagonist Abilities: Although her magic power is limited to a category of uniquely elemental magic, Juvia (especially when she was introduced as an enemy) differs greatly from the rest of other Water magic practitioners such as Mirajane, Aquarius or God Serena because, although apparently she seems to be missing of their ability to flood a whole battlefield with water, at the beginning she had a vast set of water spells that differed from each other both for their abilities and for the purposes for which she used them. This gave her a huge advantage against other mages who using ordinary magics like hers, to the point that she could even compensate for the natural weakness of her element against other elements such as ice by boiling the water to the point that she could hold her step and even almost overwhelm Gray during their combat. It's a lot of fun if we consider that after her Heel–Face Turn, she becomes a living reversal of the trope because all the opponents she will face have been able to easily curb her skills.
Awesomeness by Analysis: She is shown to have fairly keen analytical skills. For instance, when Gray makes a decoy of himself in the darkness to throw off Simon in the Tower of Heaven arc, she realizes that Simon must have known he was attacking a fake since he can see in the dark, deducing that he never meant to harm Gray.
Badass Adorable: Despite her badassery, she's a big, lovable softy when it comes to Gray... unless other girls are around.
Battle Couple: With Gray, who notes that they both work extremely well together due to how their magic compliment each other. This becomes more noticeable after the second Time Skip.
Battle in the Rain: Invoked during her battle with Gray in the Phantom Lord arc due to her Power Incontinence causing it to rain wherever she goes. She also has one with Merudy on Sirius Island.
Because You Were Nice to Me: Juvia joins the Phantom Lord guild because Jose overlooks the rain constantly around her. On a more positive note, this is also what leads her to reaffirm her love for Gray (in the anime, at least) after he accidentally insulted the rain she brought, only to save her from falling to her Disney Villain Death after beating her.
Berserk Button: You'll be very sorry if you even think of harming her beloved Gray.
Blue Eyes
Blue Is Heroic: She still keeps her blue-colored clothing after her Heel–Face Turn.
Brainwashed and Crazy: She suffers it during the arc of the Tower of Heaven where she is transformed not only mentally but also physically into a more vulgar and shameless version of herself by Vidaldus Taka (to the delight of Gerard who perceives the combat) and is dangerously incited against Lucy. Fortunately for both, Juvia's heart manages to communicate with that of Lucy, allowing her to rebel and free herself from the dark magic of the enemy.
Broken Bird: As a child, she was constantly ridiculed by other children and rejected by the men in her life because she couldn't stop making it rain everywhere. When Gray unintentionally comments on the rain when she tries to confess, it triggers such painful memories that she snaps and tries to kill him.
Can't Act Perverted Toward a Love Interest: Inverted. Juvia is very shy about getting undressed, even among other girls, but has almost no inhibitions around Gray, even stripping in public whenever he does.
Catchphrase: "Drip, drip, drop." Though she stops using it as the show progresses, reflecting her growth.
Character Development: she slowly becomes much more social with her guildmates, and by the time the grand magic arc begins, she is able to speak to Gray without gushing all over him
Character Tic: Juvia will cup her chin with her hands whenever she is experiencing intense emotions, both happy and sad. She also has a habit of clasping her hands together for the same purpose.
Clingy Jealous Girl: Flies into a rage when she first thinks Gray is in love with Lucy and subsequently attaches herself to Gray whenever Lucy shows up. Still, as far a jealousy goes, it's much more good-natured than the norm Clingy Jealous Girl standard. Lucy being one of her best friends and there isn't a truth to Lucy trying to steal Gray away from Juvia don't help matters, either.
Clothing Damage: her clothes get torn up during her fight with Merudy, as well as during the Grand magic games and the Alvarez arc.
Cloudcuckoolander: She's prone to childlike romantic fantasies the very moment her thoughts turn to Gray, or anyone who might try to take him for themselves.
Combination Attack: Among all the characters, Juvia is the one that tends more to join forces with others to overcome all the obstacles that arise to her.
Combat Pragmatist: Although not shown often, Juvia is someone who has no problems fighting dirty. In her fight with Merudy, she used the water around her to use attacks that Merudy couldn't block due to the amount of water, then followed it up with another attack before she could recover. Later in her battle with Keyes, she allowed herself to be absorbed by his attacks so she could destroy him from the inside.
Contralto of Danger: Brina Palencia's voice for Juvia is quite a bit deeper than Mai Nakahara's.
Covert Pervert: In one of her word-twisting moments, she mixes up "heated battle" with "heated grappling" and proceeds to take her clothes off.
Creepy Loner Girl: When she's introduced, Juvia is a gloomy, borderline emotionless young woman who was never able to make friends because she unintentionally made it rain wherever she went. Then she falls for Gray at first sight and is defeated by him, which causes her to immediately defrost into a love-struck maiden and she becomes more sociable after joining Gray's guild. She still can come off as creepy thanks to her Stalker with a Crush antics, though.
Creepy Monotone: Her normal manner of speaking before meeting Gray.
Crush Filter: This is how she sees Gray whenever she starts to fantasize about him.
Cue the Sun: upon seeing the sun for the first time after her battle with Gray, Juvia takes it as a sign that she is finally freed from her past life being a rain woman.
Dark Chick: When she's first introduced, she perfectly embodies this trope as she is part of the 6 most powerful and dangerous members of Phantom Lord and among them she's the only woman, which makes her a counterpart both to Erza (the strongest woman in the Fairy Tail guild) and Lucy (The Chick).
Dark Is Not Evil: She is pale-skinned, often wears dark clothes, and starts out as a member of an enemy guild. However, she's a real sweetheart once you get to know her, provided you keep your thoughts off of her darling Gray.
A Day in the Limelight: The 413 Omake/Episode 220 focuses entirely on Juvia as she celebrates the 413th day since she met and fell in love with Gray.
Death Glare: She gives these to anyone she thinks is interested in Gray.
Defeat Means Friendship: She starts out as a member of Fairy Tail's biggest rival guild when the series begins, but her defeat at Gray's hands leads her to join his guild just to be with him.
Defecting for Love: Downplayed. In the aftermath of her duel with Gray Fullbuster, she sets out to join the Fairy Tail guild so she may pursue her feelings for (read, "stalk") him. In this case, however, Phantom Lord was being dissolved by the time she started following him, leaving her with nowhere else to go.
Defrosting Ice Queen: When we first meet Juvia, she doesn't show any emotion aside from her stoic, calm demeanor. After her duel with Gray, however, her emotions open up considerably.
Despair Event Horizon: When Natsu and his friends meet her again after Fairy Tail disbands, Juvia's still grieving Gray's six-month disappearance to the point that she makes rain pour down on the village she's staying in.
Desperately Craves Affection: Having spent most of adolescence being rejected by men, she dedicates much of her time trying to win Gray's affection, and becomes very upset whenever he doesn't show any interest in her.
Determinator: When Gray orders her to do something, not even a completely useless wounded leg will prevent Juvia from drag herself in a disquieting way in pursuit of a little girl and reaching her.
Disney Villain Death: A subverted example occurs in the anime, where Juvia falls from the sky to her impending death at the conclusion of her battle with Gray. Fortunately, he saves her just in time.
Distracted by the Sexy: Her attraction to Gray made it hard for her to fight him when they first met, especially after his stripping habit kicked in. This was also the case the Grand Magic Games.
Dogged Nice Girl: She is absolutely persistent in her efforts to get Gray to like her. Most of them backfire spectacularly, but it only makes her try harder.
Easily Forgiven:
In the aftermath of the guild war with Phantom Lord, the Fairy Tail members quickly accept Juvia the moment she joins. While her list of crimes against the guild and its members are admittedly far smaller than Gajeel's, she did kidnap Lucy for Phantom Lord and attempted to kill Gray when he's fighting her to stop Abyss Break's activation.
Granted, after joining Fairy Tail and during the Thunder Legion's revolt, when Freed locks her and Cana in magical cage match where only the one left standing may leave, Juvia opts to destroy one of Laxus' Thunder Palace lacrimas instead, shocking herself into incapacity, so as not be forced on onto take up arms against her comrade, and freeing Cana at the same time. It's likely this self-sacrificial act which cemented her standing as a true member of Fairy Tail in her guildmates eyes, past transgressions be damned.
Eating the Eye Candy: Juvia enjoys ogling at Gray, especially when he unconsciously strips.
Elemental Shapeshifter: Her entire body is made of water, and she can assume numerous different forms.
Emotional Powers: Her magic power is derived from her emotional state, increasing exponentially whenever she experiences a burning passion for Gray. It also borders on Empathic Environment, causing it to rain heavily when she suffers from extreme depression or distress.
Emotionless Girl: This trope is played straight during her first appearance. Then Gray stepped into the picture, and the Blush Stickers appeared, and this character trait was all but abandoned.
Everyone Has Standards: For obvious reasons, she is the only one in the guild who doesn't seem to mind Gray's stripping habit. Despife this, even she has had to point out to that his stripping habit at times. During the second Time Skip when the two lived together, Juvia had grown tired of having to constantly pick up Gray's clothes whenever he stripped during training.
Expository Hairstyle Change: Following the aftermath of Phantom Lord's guild war with Fairy Tail, she cuts her hair short to signify her more cheerful demeanor. However, she instantly grows her hair back in despondence when she discovers that the Gray in Edolas was in love with her own Edolas counterpart, who had the same hairstyle as she did before. By the end of the Grand Magic Games, she lets her hair down completely when she decides to be more open with her love for Gray.
Evil Costume Switch: when she was brainwashed into becoming succubus by Vidaldus, she was dressed in a very revealing rock and roll outfit.
Flanderization: In early manga appearances, her affections for Gray and imagined rivalry with Lucy are much more reserved than they are shown in the anime version, where she experiences Character Exaggeration and starts Chewing the Scenery whenever either subject is brought up. The anime also sees her being much quicker to assume that other women (and some men) might be romantic rivals, whereas her original rivalry with Lucy stems from a misinterpretation over how he'd risk his life for her.
The Force Is Strong with This One: When Merudy threatens Gray in the Sirius Island arc, Juvia begins to easily overwhelm her with powerful water attacks and shows such strength that Erza—officially recognized as the strongest woman of Fairy Tail—reevaluated her initial combat abilities from when she had easily defeated her. Even Merudy, who had ranked her thirteenth among the most important members of Fairy Tail to kill, realizes that the more Juvia lets herself go completely to her emotions, the more her magic power increases.
Forgot About Her Powers: At first, though her magical power only revolved around the element of water, she had a high arsenal of rather versatile spells. However, as the manga progresses, in the fights she begins to always use the same attack spells such as Water Slicer and Water Nebula, despite she could easily use her Water Lock, a spell that creates an enormous water bubble that can drown her opponents.
Her Water Slicer seems much weaker than it does at the beginning; at its first use, Juvia herself explained and demonstrated that the water of this spell is so pressurized that it can cut hard elements such as stone and rocks. However, starting from the fight against Merudy onwards, Water Slicer is only used only as a means to easily sweep away the enemy (despite technically, considering its original characteristics, the enemies should be killed instantly).
Many times she also seems to forget to change her body into water while fighting to avoid physical damage. However, this may be justified that even if she does use it, Mashima would invent various methods to allow her opponent to damage her anyway, as evidenced by the the Sirius Island and Alvarez Empire arc.
Friendless Background: She didn't have any friends as a child due to the rain that followed her wherever she went.
The Glomp: Juvia naturally does this to Gray. This habit proved problematic for her during the Grand Magic Games.
Good Costume Switch: After Phantom Lord's demise, Juvia sheds the teru teru bozu doll and completely changes her outfit.
Gratuitous Spanish: her name comes from "Illuvia" the Spanish word for rain.
Gray Rain of Depression: She used to cause this unconsciously with her magic, and was ridiculed as a result. She causes this again over the second time skip, alone and heartbroken after Gray disappeared for six months.
Heel–Face Turn: It starts when she falls in love with Gray and becomes solidified when she joins Fairy Tail around the time of Phantom Lord's demise.
Heroic Sacrifice: She pulls one off for Cana when they are forced to battle each other in the Fantasia arc by attacking the Thunder Palace lacrima above them and electrocuting herself to prove that she really loves everyone in Fairy Tail, not that Cana needed convincing. It doesn't kill Juvia, though.
Heroic Suicide: She commits suicide when she and Gray are trapped and forced to fight due to Spriggan 12 Invel's magic, both in order to prevent herself from killing him and sparing him the agony of killing her. When she realizes Gray did the same thing, she uses the last of her life to perform a blood transfusion magic to save him. Despite her apparent demise, she pulls through with Wendy and Carla's help.
Hopeless Suitor: She wants so desperately for Gray to love her, but he just doesn't seem to like her in that way.
Hypocritical Humor: Juvia is madly in love with Gray and sees Lucy as a rival, despite the latter's constant protests. Lyon is madly in love with her and Sherria views Juvia as a rival, despite her constant protests.
Iconic Outfit: Throughout the series, Juvia often takes a liking to wearing blue-colored clothes as well as a Nice Hat.
Imaginary Love Triangle: She misinterprets something Gray's Declaration of Protection towards Lucy to mean he is in love with her, and thus believes her to be a rival in love. This eventually spirals out of control until she believes that she's in a Love Dodecahedron.
Imagined Innuendo: During their first battle, Juvia first mistook Gray's stripping as a sign of sexual intent, which she understandably thought was moving too fast.
Innocent Cohabitation: Gray and Juvia start living and training together over the second Time Skip after Fairy Tail disbands. However, the "innocent" part was heavily enforced by Gray.
Innocent Fanservice Girl: She picks up Gray's stripping habit after the second Time Skip, though she's not as unconscious about it.
Kill It with Water: She manages to kill Keyes by secretly inserting herself inside his body through her Water Body and then returning to human form in order to definitively stem his Intangibility.
Lady of Black Magic: Whenever she's not drooling over Gray, Juvia is very calm, poised in the heat of battle and ready to unleash destructive waves of water against her adversaries.
Large Ham: Prone to Chewing the Scenery whenever Gray is involved.
Let's Get Dangerous!: Whenever Gray's life is in danger, Juvia will almost certainly and instantly get her head out of the clouds in her rage and protect him, resulting in her opponent being curb stomped without prejudice.
Letting Her Hair Down: By the time of the Grand Magic Games, Juvia decides to let her hair hang down for good to show her ongoing love for Gray.
Lonely Doll Girl: Juvia had no friends as a child because it would always rain when she was around. As a result, she wears a teru teru bozu doll on her collar which, in Japanese folklore, is supposed to stop or prevent the rain. In a bit of Fridge Horror, this makes the scene in the anime where she's crying while mass producing these all the more Harsher in Hindsight in-universe.
Love at First Sight: Doubling as a Love at First Punch, Juvia falls for Gray almost immediately when they face off against each other in the Phantom Lord arc. It really doesn't help matters that his habit of disrobing kicks in almost as soon as their fight begins.
Love Hungry: Juvia is obsessed with winning Gray's affection, constantly daydreaming of him professing his feelings for her, being intimate with her, and even them getting married.
Love Makes You Dumb: Although she is one of the most intelligent characters of Fairy Tail, ever since the adaptation of the anime, she is more often than not exploited for comedic gags regarding her love for Gray.
Love Redeems: While she was nowhere near as evil as the other Element 4, it was her affection for Gray that made her want to join Fairy Tail.
Mad Love: Even after Gray flat out tells her he's not interested in her, Juvia fails to catch the message. Gray cares more for her than some instances of this trope, though.
Making a Splash: Her magic gives her the power to produce and control water, turn her body into water to avoid damage from most standard attacks, enclose her enemies in spheres of water to drown them, produce highly pressurized blades of water that can cut through the steel, and increase her body temperature to boiling levels when she falls prey to fiery emotions. She also learns Water Make similar to Gray, which she uses to transfuse her blood with Gray after they both mortally injure themselves.
Maybe Ever After: While it is never explicitly stated that they ever become an official couple, her near death in the Alvarez Empire arc causes Gray to realize his own love for Juvia, and their last scene shared together implies that Gray is even willing to bed her.
Meaningful Name: The name "Juvia" comes from the Spanish word lluvia, meaning "rain".
Mood-Swinger: She can snap from calm or cheerful to a towering temper or a malevolent vindictiveness and back again with speed, given her rain powers.
My Significance Sense Is Tingling: Or as she calls it, her Gray Radar. Juvia seems to have a sixth sense when it comes to Gray, as she gets a strange feeling whenever something is happening to Gray or if he has been at a certain area. This is most notable in the Dragon Cry movie, as she is able to detect Gray's presence in the city.
Mysterious Past: Despite being one of the most important good characters of the manga after Team Natsu, Juvia is little in-depth as a single character outside of her love for Gray and her childhood, to the point that, compared to less important figures of her as Ultear, Minerva, Rogue, Cana, Visca, Mystogun or Flare, we know very little about her past: does she really possess the ability to use aquatic magic from her birth? From whom did she inherit or learn? Who were they and what happened to her parents? All questions that almost certainly will never find an answer in depth or sensible.
Naked in Mink: Though it's rarely brought up, the manga artwork seems to indicate that Juvia doesn't wear anything other than her underwear beneath her coats, with some artwork hinting she doesn't even bother with that much.
Near-Death Experience: In the Alvarez Empire arc, Juvia commits suicide to stop her from fighting against Gray thanks to Spriggan 12 Invel's magic and uses blood transfusion magic on him. Fortunately, Wendy is able to heal her just in time.
Nice Hat: Her first outfit included a big Russian-style hat. She always shown wearing some kind of hat to go with her clothes.
Nigh-Invulnerability: She's immune to physical damage and certain spells when her body is turned into water.
Occular Gusher: she is able to flood the guildhall with her tears when she is deeply emotional over Gray.
Oh, Crap!: Juvia has a moment of slack-jawed horror the moment Gray uses his Ice Geyser on her.
Operation: Jealousy: In Dragon Cry, Juvia thinks about doing this to Gray by going with Gajeel on a job, but her fantasizes begin to shift out of control, making her back out of the idea.
Ojou: Her first look, which consisted of a young Russian woman's clothing from the 1940s, her posture and her unusually gracefully decorated and detailed pink umbrella made her look like this during her first appearances, but after joining Fairy Tail she almost lost completely this feature.
Perky Goth: Her gloomy facade is easily broken after her first appearance, showing herself to be perky and the complete opposite to her usual personality. This is especially prominent when she's around Gray.
Platonic Life-Partners: While they don't share a lot of scenes together, Juvia describes her relationship with Gajeel to be like this, as two have known each other when they were members of Phantom Lord.
Please Don't Leave Me: She gets easily upset whenever Gray leaves without telling her, especially when he's with Lucy or other female characters.
The Power of Blood: By the Alvarez Empire arc, she masters the art of Water Make to transfuse her own blood with Gray, just to ensure she will live on as a part of him in case she dies.
The Power of Love: Erza notes in the Sirius Island arc that Juvia achieves her full power while motivated by intense feelings of love for Gray.
Pretty in Mink: Most of her outfits are distinctly Russian-styled getups.
Power Incontinence: Juvia said that ever since her birth, her magic had always caused it to rain persistently around her, to the point that before meeting Gray, she had never seen a blue sky before. This is because her powers are highly emotion-based, and her feelings of depression and isolation over driving others away with the rain have only given her even less control over it. Being abandoned by Gray in X792 only makes it go From Bad to Worse by triggering a perennial flood on an entire village (to the point to be even renamed as The Rain Village), though it clears right up when Gray finally returns.
Progressively Prettier: While she was never necessarily ugly, she has a rather drab and gloomy face in her earliest appearances in the manga. Nowadays, she is at least as cute as the other Fairy Tail girls, and was even ranked 3rd in the Miss Fairy Tail contest.
Property of Love: “If anyone’s cuddling with my beloved Gray, it’s going to me.”
Proper Lady: When she's not being a Large Ham or Clingy Jealous Girl, she's rather demure and composed. She is also the only girl whose feminine skill is shown the most often in Fairy Tail: she sews her own teru teru bozu doll as a child, she makes Gray a lovely bento with a heart in the center, she bakes bread that has her face and Gray's face on them, she knits Gray a scarf, and her room is filled with Gray merchandise that is most likely handmade as well.
Punch-Clock Villain: In the Phantom Lord arc. Unlike many of the other Phantom Lord members who are evil bastards, she is just a regular wizard doing her job for a legal guild, which just happens to be catching Lucy and later defending against Fairy Tail's attack. Once the guild disbands, she's quick to get along with the other members, unlike Gajeel.
Redemption Demotion: Her rank in Phantom Lord is the equivalent of Fairy Tail's S-Class, but gets a literal demotion like Gajeel when she joins Fairy Tail, and has to take the annual exam to achieve the S-Class rank.
Rejection Affection: Despite her many attempts to get his attention, Juvia's romantic gestures are largely ignored by Gray.
Romantic Spoonfeeding: In the Penalty Game episode, she believes that Gray might have gotten a fever and offers to spoonfeed him some shaved ice. She gets a little overexcited and shoves the spoon down his throat, much to his chagrin.
Samaritan Relationship Starter: In the anime, at least, she is deeply touched when Gray saves her from her Disney Villain Death following the conclusion of their duel.
Satellite Character: Aside from her affection to Gray, very little has been done to explore her character.
Scars Are Forever: At the end of Fairy Tail, she is left with a scar on her abdomen from where she impaled herself in the Alvarez Empire arc, in the same location Gray did with himself.
Self-Proclaimed Love Interest: She tries to make this clear to anyone who might show a potential romantic interest in Gray.
She's Got Legs: By X791, she seems to have taken a liking to showing off her left leg, which sports her Blue Fairy Tail stamp on her hip.
Shipper on Deck: Her mental Love Dodecahedron shows she's been keeping track of all the possible pairings with people that could possibly point back to her or Gray. Her Shipping Goggles can actually make her hallucinate the couples being together intimately.
Shoot the Dog: In the Tartaros arc, Juvia is forced to kill the Necromancer Keyes knowing that Silver, Gray's undead father, will only stay around with his son for as long as Keyes lives. If she hadn't, Keyes would've activated the Face bomb using the undead Council chairman. When the deed is done, she feels she's no longer worthy of Gray's love.
Shower Shy: Juvia is actually very shy about her body, vocally expressing great reluctance to showering or bathing with the other girls. That said, she has no shame in stripping down if Gray is around.
Single-Target Sexuality: Gray is the only man she has in her sights, which she has openly vocalized to several characters, especially whenever other men are involved or other girls accuse her of going after other guys.
Chelia: I won't let you steal Lyon with your wild side!
Juvia: I told you, I only have eyes for Gray!
Flashbacks reveal that she once went out with Bora, but he shot her down since he kept making it rain.
Sixth Ranger: She is this to Team Natsu during the Tower of Heaven arc.
Smitten Teenage Girl: To Gray. While they are both close in age, Juvia's lonely past has made her very unsociable when she was introduced, and as a result she can be quite naive and immature at times.
Spell My Name with an "S": The Funimation dub spells her surname as "Loxar".
Squishy Wizard: Compared to the rest of the main Fairy Tail fighters, Juvia compensates for her magic's high offensive power with low resistance to damage from enemy attacks that are able to bypass the defenses of her water body.
Stalking Is Funny If It Is Female After Male: A lot of Juvia's romantic gestures towards Gray would not seem funny if the gender roles were reversed.
Stalker with a Crush: This is Played for Laughs when it comes to Gray, following him wherever he goes after Phantom Lord disbands. Her apartment is even one big Stalker Shrine filled with items and dolls themed around Gray, right down to her Gray-shaped shower loofah and a towel with a picture of Gray along with the words "Gray-Sama Love" on it.
Sugar-and-Ice Personality: Juvia has shades of this during her earliest appearances. Normally a broken and emotionless girl, her iciness literally melts the moment Gray enters her life. She thus begins alternating between her usual gloominess and gushing over him the moment she so much as hears his name (heaven forbid the one who mentions him is another girl and/or wants him dead), until her warmer personality gradually takes over.
Takes One to Kill One: Apart from very few exceptions such as Merudy's Maguilty Sense and Laxus's Lightning magic, only Juvia's own magic is capable of injuring her own body. This is demonstrated when she breaks her own leg in the Sirius Island arc, and when she impales herself with a blade of water in the Alvarez Empire arc.
There Is Only One Bed: Averted. When they were both living together, Gray and Juvia did have separate beds. This, however, did not stop Juvia from sneaking into Gray's bed while he was sleeping. He would always kick her out and tell her to sleep in her own bed, but that didn't stop her from trying.
Thinks Like a Romance Novel: When it comes to her fantasies about being with Gray.
Third-Person Person: She refers to herself by her name practically all the time to demonstrate her immaturity, though there are very rare instances where she uses the pronoun "atashi", such as when she sees Gray strip for the first time. It's dropped entirely in the Funimation dub, though not without reason as the dubbers felt it made her sound arrogant rather than childish.
Through His Stomach: One of the few ways she tries to get Gray to notice her, to varying results.
Token Good Teammate: Of Phantom Lord, as she is not cruel or vicious to the members of Fairy Tail and only fights against them because she was ordered to.
Took a Level in Cheerfulness: She goes from a gloomy Emotionless Girl during her Phantom Lord membership to a cheerful Fairy Tail wizard over time after losing her battle with Gray.
Trauma Button: After Gray unintentionally comments on her downpours during their battle, she freezes up and flies into a extraordinary rage to the point where she uses Sierra in an effort to kill Gray.
True Blue Femininity: She has blue hair and usually wears dark blue clothing, and is reserved and ladylike when not hammy or jealous.
Underestimating Badassery: Often times on the receiving end of this, with her demeanor causing her opponents to underestimate her abilities and will to fight. However, shown the willpower and skills to combat stronger enemies time and again, especially when she perceives that Gray is in any sort of danger, which makes her almost unbeatable.
The Unfettered: No matter how many times Gray bluntly turns her down, Juvia refuses to take a hint and continues in her attempt to win his affections.
Unstoppable Rage: Her fury, typically unleashed by the any sort of threats made towards Gray, easily allows her to overcome any obstacle she'd normally be unable to overcome.
Violently Protective Girlfriend: She completely snaps each and every moment she senses Gray is in danger, or worse, is the target of another woman's affections.
Villainous Breakdown: She goes through two of these in the Phantom Lord arc. First, she snaps after thinking Gray is in love with Lucy, resulting in her launching a flurry of water attacks. Then, when Gray unintentionally comments on her downpours, Juvia ends up blasting Gray with hot water and using Sierra to try and kill him.
Vitriolic Best Buds: She ends up befriending her presumed rival in love Lucy in the Tower of Heaven arc, enabling them to perform a Unison Raid on Vidaldus. She continues to view Lucy as her rival, though.
Weak, but Skilled: Juvia isn't physically powerful and resistant when compared to Natsu, Erza, Gray, Wendy, Laxus and Gajeel, but her ability to turn herself into water to avoid harm comes in handy.
Weather Manipulation: Her Water magic is so strong that every time she loses control or her emotions take over, Juvia makes it rain wherever she goes and even the sunniest of the days darkens in her presence.
Will They or Won't They?: By the time of the Alvarez Empire arc, Juvia's feelings for Gray finally start to get reciprocated, to the point where Gray promises to give her a straight answer. The finale all but says outright that Gray is at least willing to be intimate with her, blushing and vaguely saying that Juvia's body "belongs to him".
Wingding Eyes: The Heart-shaped kind. Naturally, she has these whenever she is around Gray.
Women Prefer Strong Men:
Juvia: Oh, Gray, my love, I wish you'd carry me, too!
Worf Had the Flu: During her first exam for S-rank promotion, she is confronted and literally slaughtered with Lisanna by Erza quite easily thanks to Erza utilizing her Sea Empress Armor to nullify Juvia's water magic and Erza being naturally much physically stronger than either girl, causing her to be disqualified. Later, when she and Erza fight with Merudy, she is initially put down by the enemy once again managing to get around her Water Body, but when the latter explicitly threatens the safety and health of Gray, Juvia stands up and begins to slaughter her with powerful water attacks to the shock and the astonishment not only of Merudy but also of Erza herself, showing that Juvia's full potential only comes out when she's completely and utterly emotionally invested.
Yandere: She's a rather toned-down example. Despite words to the contrary, she's never willing to hurt Lucy or anyone else who shows affection for Gray. Threaten or harm Gray, on the other hand, and she will make every effort to reduce you to a crawling and bleeding being.
Yaoi Fangirl: She gets grumpy when Gray talks with other girls, but occasionally she has fantasies of Gray being swayed by guys such as Lyon, resulting in a Nosebleed.
You Gotta Have Blue Hair: She has blue hair to match her water theme.
Gajeel Redfox[]
Magic/Weapons: Iron Dragon Slayer
Guild Stamp: On top right shoulder (black)
The Iron Dragon Slayer, also known as "Black Steel Gajeel." He was raised by the dragon Metalicana, who taught him the power to transform any part of his body into metal. He starts out as a member of Phantom Lord and Jose's right-hand man, but joins Fairy Tail after his old guild disbands. However, it takes a long time for the guild to accept him since he is responsible for destroying their old guildhall and injuring Team Shadow Gear while a member of Phantom Lord. He is also a Double Agent spying on the dark guild Raven Tail for Fairy Tail.
Voiced by: Wataru Hatano (Japanese) and David Wald (English) |
- Anime Hair: Probably the worst offender on this page. It almost makes him an Expy of Raditz!
- Anti-Hero: Type III.
- Arc Villain: In the Fairy Academy omake/OVA.
- The Atoner: Ever since he joined the guild.
- Back-to-Back Badasses: With Levy.
- Badass: Definitely. See Crazy Awesome.
- BFS: Karma Demon Iron God Sword.
- Big Damn Heroes: Sent by Mystogan to help save the guild, at which point he turned Erza and Gray back to normal. And then they pulled their own with Lucy. He also saved Natsu twice during their battle against Laxus, and was willing to put aside their differences to fight. He also saved Levy from certain death at the hands of Grimoire Heart.
- Blade Below the Shoulder: A standard attack for him. In the anime, he takes it up to Chainsaw Good.
- Blood Knight: He has a bit too much fun knocking people around, especially in the Phantom Lord arc.
- Breath Weapon: Par for the course for Dragon Slayers; his shoots metal shrapnel.
- Chewing the Scenery: His song "Best Friend"
- Chrome Champion: His Iron Dragon Scales
- Clingy Jealous Guy: Gets like that sometimes about Pantherlily, his cat.
- Covert Pervert: If his team wins the Magic Games, they can ask the losing team to do anything for the winning team for a day. Gajeel's plan? Lucy in a Bunny Girl outfit, dancing for him while he plays the guitar.
- Defeat Means Friendship
- Delinquents: In the OVA.
- Determinator: Almost as big an example as Natsu.
- Double Agent: Against Raven Tail, under Makarov's orders. He's really on Fairy Tail's side.
- The Dragon: Originally introduced as Master Jose's right hand man in Phantom Lord.
- Easily Forgiven: Despite the stunts he pulls during the Phantom Lord arc, he quickly becomes a member of Fairy Tail. Apart from some initial unease at how he doesn't really fit in, he is accepted fairly quickly. But it turns out to be a subversion. Makarov doesn't forgive him at all, but invited him because without proper guidance he would just get even worse.
- Evil Counterpart: Originally introduced as Natsu's.
- Evil Laugh: Gajeel's laugh is freaky. Interestingly enough, it stays creepy after he becomes one of the good guys.
- Expy: many have claimed him to be This Generation's Vegeta.
- Extra Ore Dinary: As the Iron Dragon Slayer, he has some of the same abilities that Natsu does, and many that he doesn't.
- Fangs Are Evil: All Dragon Slayers have them, but Gajeel comes closest to playing it straight due to his Jerkass and Sociopathic Hero nature.
- Heel Face Revolving Door: Subverted; Gajeel has only switched sides once, despite numerous hints of otherwise.
- The Hero: On Fairy Tail's B Team in the Tournament Arc.
- Heroic Willpower: He gets stabbed in the arm and keeps fighting. By stabbed in the arm, I mean from the middle of his palm to the end of his shoulder.
- Toned down in the anime, but still there: he manages to turn his arm into an iron pole before the sword pierces it, and you still see it crack to the point that it almost breaks, and it's obviously painful for him.
- Hollywood Tone Deaf
- Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: Him and Levy. He's tall enough that he can use her head as an elbow rest.
- Image Song: "Metallic Kiss"
- I'm Taking Him Home With Me: Towards Pantherlily.
- Jerkass
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: After his Heel Face Turn and subsequent Character Development.
- Kick the Dog: In his Phantom Lord days, he attacked Shadow Gear, Lucy, and even his own teammates if they got in the way of his attacks. Not quite Moral Event Horizon, because he never used lethal force.
- Kindhearted Cat Lover: Yes, really. Though, it may be just because it's Pantherlily.
- Kung Fu Wizard
- Lightning Bruiser: He's impressively fast for someone who's literally Made of Iron and hits like a tank.
- Made of Diamond: This is the proper trope, despite the fact that he has a technique that makes him quite literally Made of Iron.
- Opposites Attract: With Levy. It is currently debatable if his feelings for her are romantic or not, but he definitely has a soft spot for her.
- Manly Tears
- Tears of Joy: Anytime he reunites with Pantherlily.
- Only Sane Man: At times.
- Parental Abandonment: Metalicana just disappeared one day, like every other dragon.
- Power Perversion Potential: A bit. Besides being able to turn his arms and legs into swords and his skin into scales, Gajeel can make giant iron rods and various metal bindings. He has used the latter ability on Jet, Droy, Levy, Lucy, and Mirajane.
- Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Same reason as Natsu.
- Red Baron: In Phantom Lord, he was known as "Black Steel" Gajeel.
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: They were originally green.
- Reverse Mole: Ivan thinks that he's using Gajeel to spy on Fairy Tail for him, but it turns out he's a Double Agent spying on him for Fairy Tail.
- Rival Turned Evil: Inverted. He starts out as Natsu's Evil Counterpart and is currently his rival.
- Shapeshifter Weapon
- Ship Tease: With Levy!
- Sixth Ranger: If Wendy is becoming the Tagalong Kid to Team Natsu, then he also certainly seems to be slowly becoming this.
- Slasher Smile: Smiles from Gajeel always show teeth. Big teeth.
- Sociopathic Hero: More or less.
- Spam Attack: His Iron Dragon Lance: Demon Logs.
- Sword and Sorcerer: With Levy. He's the sword, despite being a wizard as well.
- Taking the Bullet: Well, lightning bolt. Right before Laxus almost kills Natsu and hits Levy.
- Tall, Dark and Snarky: A fairly mild example when it comes to the snark but he does have his moments, especially with Natsu. He's definitely tall and dark, though.
- The Nicknamer: Among other things, he's been noted to call Natsu "Salamander", Lucy "Bunny Girl", and Lily "Black Cat".
- Justified with Natsu; the first chapter makes it clear that his nickname was actually "Salamander" before the two ever met.
- This Is a Drill: Karma Demon: Iron Spiral
- Token Evil Teammate: Even after joining Fairy Tail and being marginally accepted, he still seems to be the guild's resident Ax Crazy.
- Tsundere: Some fans think that this is an apt description of his relationship with Fairy Tail and Levy.
- The anime seems to agree.
- The Worf Effect: In the second Ova/Fairy Academy, Erza whacks him with a iron pipe.
- Weaksauce Weakness: All dragon slayers seem to suffer from Natsu's aversion to transportation.
- Would Hit a Girl: As Levy and Lucy can attest to.
- The anime takes this Up to Eleven. In the manga, when Lucy is captured Gajeel ties her to the wall and chucks knives near her head. Harsh, but intimidating rather than damaging. In the anime, he just straight-out wails on her.
- Genre Savvy: He claims he did this deliberately to make Natsu angry when he found them.
- You Shall Not Pass: To Yomazu and Kawazu.
Kinana[]
Magic/Weapons: Learning Take Over Guild Mark: Unknown
A young girl and a minor character who recently joined the guild. She used to be Cobra of Oracion Seis' pet snake, Cuberos, who was turned into a snake many years ago by an evil mage. After Oracion Seis fell to Natsu and friends, Makarov found the snake and, realizing it was under a spell, transformed her back into a human. She doesn't have any memory of her past, and only occasionally hears someone calling out to her in her dreams.
- All There in the Manual: Where just about everything we know of her so far comes from.
- Ascended Extra: Was just a background character in the manga put in there as a joke by Mashima (see below) but the recent filler seems to feature her a bit more.
- Baleful Polymorph: Used to be Cobra's pet snake, Cuberos.
- Brought Down to Normal
- Irony: After being Brought Down to Normal, she's now learning Take Over.
- Laser-Guided Amnesia
- Shrinking Violet: With purple hair to boot.
- Verbal Tic: She used to end her sentences with -kina before the Time Skip.
- Write Who You Know: Her initial design was based off of one of Mashima's assistants.
Pantherlily[]
Magic/Weapons: Aera, Buster Marm, Musica Sword
Guild Mark: Back (Silver)
An Exceed who, unlike Happy and Carla, was born and raised in Edolas. He was exiled from his home country for aiding an injured human, Mystogan, leading him to side with the humans as Captain of the 1st Magic War Division in the Edolas Royal Army. Gajeel later claims him as his cat partner, much like Happy is to Natsu and Carla is to Wendy.

- Afraid of Lightning: And it's adorable.
- Anti-Villain: Before his Heel Face Turn.
- Badass
- Badass Adorable: He's just. So. Huggable. Half of the time.
- Badass Baritone
- BFS/Cool Sword: Wielded the gigantic "Buster Marm" in Edolas, which was adjustable in size, but usually many times larger than Pantherlily himself. Unfortunately it was shattered in his fight with Gajeel. His new Musica Sword, acquired from a Grimoire Heart member, has the same size shifting capabilities, which allows him to carry it around even when he's in his chibi form.
- Charles Atlas Superpower: Has no actual magic besides his Battle Mode Shift, yet he can punch hard enough to break rock and wield a massive BFS.
- The Comically Serious
- Expy: Somehow he looks like Eugene from Tales of Rebirth...
- He also bears a striking resemblance to Blacksad, which is very likely intentional, as the author has admitted to being a fan of the latter, even having a signed copy.
- Fluffy the Terrible: Why does his name sound so cute?
- Fun Size: After going to Earthland.
- Funny Animal: In the same vein as Komamura.
- Genius Bruiser
- Good Scars, Evil Scars: One going on the side of his left eye.
- Heel Face Turn
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: The first hint should have been that he's more or less the sole recipient of Coco's admiration. The next was when he saves a young Mystogan's life in a Flash Back. He also catches Queen Chagot when she nearly falls from the sky.
- Manly Tears
- Non-Human Sidekick: To Gajeel.
- Only Sane Man: Is absolutely bewildered by the guild's antics.
- Perpetual Frowner
- Redemption Demotion: Since his Heel Face Turn he has become much less effective in fights, mostly because of the limited amount of time he can spend in his battle form since coming to Earthland.
- Shipper on Deck: For Happy/Carla.
- The Stoic: Next to Carla, he may be among the most serious of the Fairy Tail guild.
- Not So Stoic: Gajeel managed to break through to the Blood Knight underneath in their fight, judging by Lily's smile.
- Also he's afraid of thunder
- Not So Stoic: Gajeel managed to break through to the Blood Knight underneath in their fight, judging by Lily's smile.
- Talking Animal
- Vocal Dissonance: He has a deep, gruff voice befitting his big, muscular form. In his chibi form, he sounds exactly the same.
- Voluntary Shapeshifting: After going to Earthland, he displays the ability to temporarily transform, with all of his strength and sword fighting skills, into his hulking, regular body.
- Winged Humanoid: He's an Exceed.
Romeo Conbolt[]
Magic/Weapons: Rainbow Fire Guild Mark:Top of left shoulder
Macao's son. After spending the first portion of the series dreaming about it, he becomes a member of Fairy Tail following the time skip. His magic is called Rainbow Fire, which lets him conjure flames of different qualities based on their color (blue flames are cold, orange flames are foul-smelling, purple flames are sticky, etc.).

- All of the Other Reindeer: Bullied by other kids because his dad is in Fairy Tail.
- Bratty Half-Pint: Before the Time Skip.
- Chekhov's Gunman: Appears to become far more important after the Time Skip. Also, his future self first appears at the end of chapter 234.
- Continuity Nod: Appears in the background of some panels.
- Did You Just Flip Off Cthulhu?: Punches Makarov after he refused send someone to help Macao
- Missing Mom: She divorced Macao.
- Mouthy Kid
- Perpetual Frowner: He hadn't smiled once during Natsu and the others' seven-year-long absence.
- Playing with Fire
- Fireballs: Not as strong as Natsu's, though.
- Technicolor Fire: Thanks to Totomaru's lessons.
- Scarf of Asskicking
- Take Up My Sword: Even though Natsu's still alive, he seems to be imitating him in looks and in magic after the 7 year timeskip.
- Took a Level In Badass: Seems to have done so over the seven year timeskip.
