A parafandom roleplay on Live Journal, the general story is that people from all worlds and times have been brought to this place in-between worlds called the Nexus. Part of its charm is that it lets players do what they will, meaning most events are player-hosted. There is an underlaying plot which occasionally comes into play, but it changes (sometimes dramatically) depending on the characters who participate in events and the things they do, making it a more dynamic story than anything else.
Now has a tumblr - Texts From the Nexus
Tropes Used:[]
- Action Girl: Nearly every female at some point or other but standouts are Annabeth, Faith, Laura, Buffy.
- Adults Are Useless: Can be the attitude of some of the more combat-experienced Academy students.
- It has to be noted, however, that this is just an attitude. Often when they're called in, the adults are more than capble of helping out.
- Affably Evil: The Master. He teaches History.
- You could also count Jareth, who sees the Nexus as 'his holiday.', and is often the Only Sane Man in a situation
- A Little Something We Call "Rock and Roll": Usually seen as a bonding exercise. If you want a literal example, just look to the Bohemians.
- Anachronism Stew: Happens but with less Fish Out of Temporal Water outcomes than you might expect. As a rule of thumb, the general 'time-period' of the Nexus seems to be somewhere amongst the late 90s to contemporary.
- And I Must Scream: Rule of thumb, assume this when Redd gets bored and decideds to play.
- Band of Brothers: Generally tends to be the outcome of some of the more harrowing plot posts
- Big Bad: Amongst the characters, Bison is considered this. On a larger scale, the Empire is also this.
- Big Brother Is Watching: The Empire
- In a more humorous example, Sparkly Mc Sparklepants, from the player created Nexus-Book, who spreads gossip. Think of him as the Nexus' form of Gossip Girl. And he certainly isn't Trey Sylvania.
- Big Damn Heroes: Happens with great frequency. One of the best examples was the storming of Captain Hook's ship to rescue the kidnapped people
- Break the Cutie: While X is tougher than most, this certainly qualifies: his personality was copied and reprogrammed, then said personality (apply dubbed "Maverick") proceeded to hijack his body and go on a murderous rampage, killing quite a few people in the Nexus, harming more, and doing tons of property damage. And all while X could clearly see and hear what was going on, but couldn't do anything about it.
- Andrea's experiences would definitely count
- Bunny Ears Lawyer: Inspector Clouseau has shades of this.
- Casual Danger Dialog: Throw a rock. You're sure to hit someone who uses this trope.
- Card-Carrying Villain: The Joker and Redd certainly count.
- Convenient Enemy Base: There's an abandoned warehouse district, and a villians bar.
- Cool Teacher: While every teacher can be considered this to at least one student, notable examples are Faith Lehane, Jamie Madrox, and Chris Halliwell.
- Crazy Enough to Work: A lot of the best ways to resolve plot elements can end up like this.
- Deadpan Snarker: There's many.
- Elaborate University High: The Academy. A Gothic looking castle on the outside, incredibly up-to-date inside. No, we don't question this.
- Eternal English: Explained in a timey-wimey, space-wacey like fashion by a Tardis creating a projection field.
- Even Evil Has Standards: The Master (Ainley version) regarding certain behaviours of villians within the Nexus. Anyone who effects something he claims will pay.
- This can apply to Dr. Eggman as well.
- Eye Scream: Happened to Hakkai once when Andrea decided to fight him in class.
- Fille Fatale: The St Trinian Girls
- Film Within A Game: Mark Cohen is in various stages of making a documentary about the Nexus.
- First Girl Wins: Actually, subverted. While there are some pairings that manage to last a while, couples do break up and new ones are formed.
- Fish Out of Water: The premise behind the game, though characters can usually find their feet after having it explained to them.
- For the Evulz: The Joker once broadcast a game show that included him shocking the constants with increasing voltages. The reason was this trope.
- Actually, that can happen with a lot of the Joker based plots. It's generally best to avoid him if you can
- Geographic Flexibility: While there is a map, the actual size and where little things are can be a bit ... foggy.
- Heroic BSOD: Understandably, X had an almost literal one after the other personality was removed.
- Identical Stranger: Due to the nature of the game, it can happen a lot. Most current example is Arthur Dent and John Watson.
- Intergenerational Friendship: There is a lot of this in the Nexus, due to the Time Lords and vampires. Some examples would be the Master's friendship with Morgana, the Doctor's friendship with Gazza, and Eric with Vlad.
- Kid Hero: At least half of the students at the Academy.
- Local Hangout: The Academy has shades of this due to simply being where most people end up. Fangtasia is another good example, as is the Town Hall.
- Castle Madrox is also becoming this.
- Mega Crossover
- My God, What Have I Done?: X's reaction after being freed from Maverick's influence, though with less words and more horrified choking noises.
- Andrea, again, after numerous break the cutie moments.
- Odd Friendship: Considering the characters can come from any world or time, it's pretty much a guarantee.
- Though perhaps the strangest is X and Otto. Yes, Mega Man X and Otto Octavius are best friends. It's somehow both heartwarming and bizarre.
- Then again, Otto's player has repeatedly stated that X's friendship, acceptance, and care are the things that's helped Otto regain and hold onto his sanity. X literally used the power of friendship to make Otto somewhat of a good guy.
- Though perhaps the strangest is X and Otto. Yes, Mega Man X and Otto Octavius are best friends. It's somehow both heartwarming and bizarre.
- Older Than They Look: X looks roughly around 25-27 years of age. He's around 200 years old. Could also be considered Really 700 Years Old, though in a more mild sense. Justified considering he's a Reploid and thus doesn't age or wear out.
- The Time Lords (yes, there's more than one), and the vampires obviously. Oh, and Aphrodite.
- Person of Mass Destruction: Throw a rock. You're more likely than not to hit someone like this.
- Ragtag Bunch of Misfits: There's many, but a special nod must be made to the Nexus Police Force. Lead by Brigaider Alistair Lethbridge Gordon Stewart, with the second in command being {{[[[The Pink Panther]] Inspector Clouseau}}. Members include Captain Angua von Uberwald and H.M. Murdock, and they are occasionally assisted by Mr Holmes and his assistant Dolly Levi
- Reasonable Authority Figure: Generally speaking, one of the Doctors or even the Master. To the Academy kids, Jamie Madrox is generally seen in this light.
- Reed Richards Is Useless: Played with. While the many genuises in the Nexus have been able to make strides in understand it, and creating ways to travel betweeen realities, there wil be the occasional plot post that completely destroys their progress.
- Ship Tease: Also a Crack Ship, but Eric/Susan, dear Aphrodite, Eric and Susan.
- Shipper on Deck: Aphrodite. For every single pairing.
- Practically everyone (except Death) for Eric/Susan.
- Status Quo Is God: In a sense. It doesn't matter what happens, if it's term time, the Academy will go on.
- Strapped to An Operating Table: A reprogramming table, but still — this is how Bison tried to restrain X while having him reprogrammed. It didn't work.
- Super-Hero School: The Academy. Also a Magic School, and a Boarding School.
- There Are No Therapists: Averted! There's a grand total of ... one. And he's technically a criminal profiler for the FBI.
- True Companions: Both between the characters, and the players themselves. It's a close knit community.
