  • And the Fandom Rejoiced: The mere mention of a new Fire Emblem,
    • While it is a base breaking issue (well, the paid part is) the fact that Nintendo has announced use of the DLC to bring back old characters and maps has been met positively...some just hope the maps and characters will have story importance rather being totally random (which is fair).
    • The news that the Cleric class could promote into NUNSWITHAXES was greeted with immense enthusiasm, likely as a result of the series' history of giving female units limited access to axes (the only real examples being Titania,Ekhidna and Minerva).
      • Based on the recent trailer, the Battle Cleric could be a female variation of the Fighter class. Fans rejoiced further at the thought.
      • Nope, they're the male equivalent through the Priest promotion tree. Still, fans seem to like Libera pretty well.
    • Dating Sim elements have been brought to the support system, and pairing some characters allow them to have children.
    • Emelina and Valhart will become playable characters via Spotpass.
    • Roy is in this game!...as a DLC character.
    • Female Mercenaries and Heroes make appearances. This is the first time they've been seen since the Binding Blade. Celebrations were had.
    • After a disappointing E3 conference that didn't include Fire Emblem, tweets from Nintendo officials confirm that it is coming to America. Should have been at the conference, but still deserves rejoicing!
      • Our bodies weren't ready.
  • Base Breaker: Nowi. Some fans hate her for the (pseudo)lolicon implications, but some fans don't care about that, and are just happy Manakete's are useful the whole game thru.
    • On one hand, Tharja is seen as Hot as Hell and as a rather interesting character. Others accuse her of being a an abusive bitch.
    • Priam, one of the Spotpass characters. On one hand he's badass and has fun supports. On the other... well, it's best to check Ship-to-Ship Combat.
    • Sumia has devoted fans who find her funny and cute, and devoted haters who call her pathetic and antifeminist. Lots of this comes form her being one of Chrom's Implied Love Interests, with the other being the Female Avatar.
    • The Avatar, whether male or female. A good and fun Player Character that contributes lots to the game? A Mary Sue played straight whose only purpose is being a self-insert?
  • Bribing Your Way to Victory: A few DLC chapters seem to smell strongly of this, such as one in which enemies drop enormous amounts of gold, one consisting entirely of Entombed (pathetically weak undead enemies that give huge amounts of exp) and, perhaps most egrigiously "Infinite Divine Weapons". Of course, it's not quite as bad as some other games, as here you actually have to play the chapters to reap the rewards, which could be pretty painful on higher difficulties. And it seems some of them contain nasty traps for those who blindly rush them for farming purposes, such as Level 30 Entombed with Counter...
  • Broken Base: The idea of having another Avatar main character made many people scream in horror, believing that they'd be another Kris.
    • The idea of Casual Mode. On one side, a base that is happy for a means for new people to get into the game without all the frustration. On the other, snobby long-time fans who think it's all being dumbed down.
    • The art direction alone has created a few rifts. Some fans like the more over-the-top anime-stylized character designs and visuals, but others prefer the simpler outfits and gravity-obeying hair that was present in past games. Yusuke Kozaki, the character designer, has been pretty much accused of being a pervert and even a borderline sex offender solely for the Hotter and Sexier designs that he worked on - under the guidance of the art director Toshiyuki Kosakihara, it should be noted.
    • The paid DLC alone was met with some reception and some resistance, with this being the first Nintendo game to ever utilize it. Nullified a bit later since there are also Spotpass characters, who are for free.
    • Everything regarding Eirika's DLC has triggered massive bouts of flame on many a forum. Given her redesign from a frontline fighter to a Staff Chick and accusations of sexism over the "Bride" Class. Conveniently, they ignore that the Brides are equally good as fighters and as support units, and that she can also be downloaded as a Myrmidon.
    • The Dating Sim elements are a source of flames on a few forums, but they're an equal source of praise... if that isn't Broken Base...
    • Male!Robin/Lucina is a beloved ship, however there are some that don't like it. One reason is that it's overhyped, another reason is that female! Robin can romance Chrom (another beloved ship) and can become her mother.
  • Contemptible Cover: The cover of the manual shows nothing but a picture of Inverse.
  • Crack Pairing: Completely, utterly Averted. Every possible pairing has a unique set of supports building up to it, and everyone seems to have a legitimate reason for falling in love with anyone else.
  • Double Standard: The fandom complains about Nowi looking super young, but nobody says a thing about Donnel and Ricken looking AND being young.
  • Ensemble Darkhorse: Lon'qu, Tharja, Gaius, Cherche, etc.
    • Lucina is already becoming possibly the favorite female!Lord in the series.
    • Over at Serenes Forest, fans totally ate up Henry (the Dark Mage) like he was going out of style.
  • Epileptic Trees: The Marthlike individual and the Shield of Seals seen in the February 2012 trailer and pictures of the world map have ignited speculation that there is some sort of connection to the Akaneia universe present, either through being set in the future, an alternate timeline, or a mere crossover.
  • Fandom Heresy: Technically goes for all games that have a both gender MU but don't assume Robin is canonically a male.
  • Fan Nickname: "Buttons" for Lissa, as a result of her unusual hat.
  • Fanon: For people outside the fandom and even some in it, Lucina's mother is typically female Robin. The only time this is averted is if Robin is male (bonus points if he's dating Lucina).
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Olivia/Henry got very, very popular with the fanbase, mostly due to their supports.
    • Libra/Virion who got immensely popular before the game was released since Virion considered Libra attractive (and still does).
      • Virion is also often paired up with Cherche, his snarky yet devoted Ninja Maid.
    • Most couples in this game work just fine, so it's not really a "Fan-Preferred Couple", however there is... the sad tale of Cordelia/Chrom...
    • Lucina/Robin (or Robin/Cordelia if you find that weird) for male Robin and Chrom/Robin for female Robin.
  • Fan Yay: As if the gay fans weren't prominent enough (just check out the amount of Tellius, particularly laguz art out there), the male and female cast is bringing the community out in full force. Granted, it's not just gay and lesbian fans falling for same-sex characters.
  • Game Breaker: If you decide to go ahead and and alter Sariya into Knight and Archer (her two alternate class trees) she'll gain massive boosts to defense and skill. Change her back to Scorcerer, slap a Ruin tome on her, and watch everything get criticaled to death.
    • The Avatar is this to a ridiculous degree, with his easy access to almost every class in the game allowing him to collect a ludicrously powerful selection of skills.
    • The Avatar's child Morgan can easily become one as well, especially if you pair MU with a second gen character who already received boosts from their parents.
    • Certain Spotpass Units, such as Sigurd or Alvis are easy to obtain (Oh, look 17000 in game gold) L20 Promoted units with a bunch of skills and very high stats, not unlike The Black Knight in Radiant Dawn... except they can be reclassed to lower levels, and don't leave your party. Oh you can get one as early as Ch6.
  • Good Bad Bugs: By abusing the way skills get passed down, it's possible to get males with Demoiselle. And yes, it still gives bonuses to nearby male allies.
  • Memetic Mutation: NUNSWITHAXES.
    • It's a joke inside the fandom of how weird it is male Robin can romance Lucina but Female Robin can romance her father, Chrom, thus making her her mother.
  • No Yay: In a broken base kind of way, Male Robin/Lucina is seen as weird due to Female Robin typically being seen as Lucina's mother.
    • This is also why you don't see much Female Robin/Lucina in contrast, it gives off some bad implications.
  • The Scrappy: At first, Sully got a lot of hate for being a female cavalier and looking a bit more gonkish the other female characters. She got much better later, however.
  • Relationship Writing Fumble: Both female and male Robin have a close bond with Chrom, so a lot of their interactions can be taken with romantic implications. This is fine if the player chooses to romance Chrom with female Robin, not so much if you play male Robin (though some don't mind) or play as female Robin but romance someone else.
  • Ship-to-Ship Combat: Awakening marked the return of the Lover/Inheritance System from Genealogy, PLUS it added a highly shippable Player Character who could be either a guy or a girl depending on the player's preferences. Logically, the fans started tearing one another over this...
    • The Protagonist Chrom has six prospect girlfriends, and two of them (the Female Avatar and Sumia) also qualify as Implied Love Interests. Rabid fans of the Female Avatar/Chrom ship cry that Sumia is an anti-feminist and weak Shallow Love Interest that gets forced down the throats of the players by the story and by her and Chrom having limited marriage options; whereas some Sumia supporters blame the Female Avatar for the behavior of her so-called fans and refer to her as a bitchy Mary Sue who gets "rewarded" for "abusing" Chrom in their talks and, since a the only "Chrom girlfriend" who has an important role in the story, is more shoved as "the girlfriend" than Sumia ever was.
    • Chrom also has loads of Ho Yay with the Male Avatar, though technically speaking they cannot marry. Many Chrom/Male Avatar fans bash the Female Avatar because she can marry him and also call her an abusive bitch and a Mary Sue.
    • People who ship Sumia with other men, especially Frederick and Gaius, often join the Chrom/Sumia bashing and falsely claim that Chrom doesn't appreciate or love Sumia as much as their chosen beaus would.
    • Sumia's best friend and Cool Big Sis, Cordelia, is an Unrequited Tragic Maiden towards Chrom. Alias one of the few guys Sumia can marry. Naturally many Cordelia fans started calling Sumia a whore and a traitor for being able to wed the guy that they think Cordelia is entitled to solely for pining after him. On the other hand many fans accused Cordelia of being pathetic and stupid for not getting over Chrom in five minutes, no matter who he marries.
    • Henry/Olivia became a very popular ship soon, due to people finding their supports cute and funny. Many shippers soon became aggressive and snooty towards people who liked other Henry ships better, especially when some faulty fan-translations made fans believe that their talks were toned down from the original.
    • Some Lissa/Lon'qu fans got pretty defensive and bitchy towards people who didn't ship it. On the other hand, some Lon'qu/Lissa detractors got just as PA and bitchy towards all Lissa/Lon'qu fans (Maribelle/Lon'qu fans were especially bad at that).
    • The Lover/Inheritance deals led to the arrival of a certain group of characters midway through the story: the casts' future children. . And the Avatar can marry one of them. The circumstances make this specific ship war angle extremely polemic: those who favor it say that there's no sin on using what the game allows to and also believe that it's highly benefitial for the Avatar's own child, Morgan.; whereas those who don't favor it believe that is creepy to pair up the Avatar with the future kids of his/her friends.
    • The ship wars even involve one of the Spot-Pass characters, whose appearance can potentially throw a wrench on a ship from another game. Priam, a huge badass that can be recruited almost at the end, claims to be a descendent of none other than Ike, who was last seen leaving with either his best friend Soren or his companion Ranulf. Many Ike/Soren fangirls accused IntSys of being homophobic, whereas many Ike/Soren haters started bragging about the apparent Ship Sinking, and others simply wondered if Priam was Ike's descendant through Mist and Boyd rather than Ike himself. (Which is not unlikely, considering how Anri the Hero's bloodline was perpetuated through his brother Marcelus.) Though Priam does claim he's Ike's direct descendent. Heroes further muddied the waters by having Priam actually meet Ike and the conversation implying he considers himself the sword Ragnell's descendant rather than that of Ike himself. This soothed the Ike/Soren fans, at least.
  • Tastes Like Diabetes: Emmeryn's supports with the Robins.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks: You have seen the Broken Base section, right?
  • Tier-Induced Scrappy: Unfortunately Donnel isn't well liked in gameplay (though adored in story). His villager class gains exp at the same rate as a tier one class but has pathetic max stats, he requires a change seal to promote, has less class options then any other character, and has no Lance using promotions when he'll have an A Rank in Lances by the time he's a level 30 villager. Really, Donnel's main use just seems to be passing on Aptitude skill to a second generation character (or for Noire, Nah and Kjelle, the chance to be a Pegasus Knight -> Dark Flier and acquire Galeforce without Mother Inheritance).
    • Subverted for two characters. Maribelle and Brady both have pretty decent growth rates (though for Brady it's dependent on his father) but many have complained about how they got screwed by the RNG.
  • Unfortunate Implications: The Japanese fortune telling option seems to openly poke fun at the Yaoi and Yuri fans. Thankfully, the localization tones this down.
  • What Do You Mean It Wasn't Made on Drugs?: The Fourtune Telling option.
