Nergal[]

File:Nergal 5998.jpg
Cquote1
“I am who I am. The pain of others, I do not feel. The sorrow of others does not touch me. Death feeds me. Death pleases me. I am the essence I consume. You fools will become corpses here, because I wish it to be.”
Nergal
Cquote2

This Dark Druid is the de facto head of the Black Fang, the puppetmaster behind the scenes keeping all the other villains in line. About as enigmatic as they come, Nergal has grand ambitions to bind Dragons to his control, but to realize them, he needs vast amounts of "Quintessence," and to gain that, he intends to cause vast amounts of death and destruction. Striking up an alliance with the mad Lord Darin of Laus, and with the aid of his creations, the Morphs, he has set the stage for a war that will provide him with all the quintessence he needs.

Fairly generic Big Bad fare, right? If the player is willing to go hunting for some things off the beaten path, however, a new picture of the Dark Druid will come into focus, that of a tragic and deeply disturbed man who believes he is serving a greater purpose...

Cquote1

 Class: Dark Druid

Cquote2

  • Anticlimax Boss: By the time you've found a way around his Story-Breaker Power, you'll have a weapon capable of killing him in three hits. He is also killing you in three hits, though, so watch out!
  • Archnemesis Dad: Maaaaaaaaybe...
  • Beard of Evil
  • Big Bad
  • Cain and Abel: With Athos, in the "good friends" mode.
  • Dark Is Evil
  • The Dark Side Will Make You Forget
  • Early-Bird Cameo: He doesn't actually appear, but is only just mentioned by a Black Fang agent in Chapter 7 (the Fang's first proper appearance), hinting at the larger story arc.
  • Evil Counterpart: To Athos.
  • Evil Sorcerer
  • Face Heel Turn
  • Good Scars, Evil Scars: Just look at the one left by Athos (who was, admittedly, trying to kill him to stop his plans).
  • Hero-Killer: Literally, in fact.
  • Love Makes You Evil
  • Mad Scientist: A magical variation.
  • The Man Behind the Man: He was this for Ephidel at first, with only passing references and hinting at first (see Early-Bird Cameo), before the story slowly unveiled his motives, culminating in his first actual appearance at the Dragon's Gate.
  • Motive Decay: Strongly implied to have happened to him at some point throughout Eliwood's tale. The sidequests in Hector's story tell this particular tale.
  • Obviously Evil: Well, duh. Although it's revealed that he wasn't always quite as evil as he looks.
  • Ninian And Nils I Am Your Father: Never outright said, but heavily implied.
  • Really Seven Hundred Years Old: Noted by Nils to be preventing the aging process with Quintessence, which hints at his abnormal lifespan fairly early. He's older than The Scouring itself, in fact, proven by his fathering Nils and Ninian some ten years or so before the war broke out.
    • Athos noted that he and Nergal learned about Quintessence from the dragons at Arcadia, which raises the question of how Nergal prevented the aging process in the 500 years between the Scouring and his studies in Arcadia while still not being too evil to befriend Athos.
  • Sanity Slippage -> Villainous Breakdown: Thanks to being consumed by the magic he researched (and forgetting his past over the centuries), his sanity has long been deteriorating. Especially evident in the final battle when his comments suggest Motive Decay and his death quote (whichever you get) shows he's completely lost it in the end.
  • Start of Darkness: But you'll only see it in the sidequests.... Once, he was just a simple man who dabbled in the dark arts, but who loved his wife and children very much. When his wife Aenir, an ice dragon, was taken from him he tried to save her; leaving his children behind at Valor with the instruction to go through the Dragon's Gate if he didn't return in ten years. In order to re-open the Dragon's Gate to be with them, he began to delve even further into the darkness... only to lose himself in the process, forget why he wanted power and ultimately become a villain.
  • Story-Breaker Power: Actually a plot point.
  • Tragic Villain
  • Well-Intentioned Extremist: Started as this, with the desire to find his wife keeping him alive for years. By the time he met Athos, he seemed to have forgetten much of his purpose (or else Athos was keeping quiet), and the Dark Magic he researched without regard to the dangers drove him over the edge.

Brendan Reed[]

The founder of the Black Fang and its de jure leader, Brendan, though an assassin, is a noble man who until recently targeted only corrupt nobles, and was seen as a friend to the populace of the country of Bern at large. A widower with two adult sons, he has recently married a woman much younger than himself, Sonia, and with her arrival came a certain corrupting influence in his organization. It is revealed in the hidden Gaiden chapter that Brendan too had his doubts about Sonia, but never acted on them, so he had some knowledge of what was going on, but he acted too late against her.

Cquote1

 Class: Warrior

Cquote2

Sonia Reed[]

File:Sonia 1277.jpg
Cquote1

“Only the chosen few will live to see the new world. Perfect people! People like me!”

Cquote2

Called "The Queen of the Four Fangs," Sonia is Brendan's second wife, almost disturbingly younger than he. This is, in fact, among the least disturbing things about this woman, for she is actually one of Nergal's dark servants, and the go-between between the Dark Druid and the Fang proper. She is a skilled manipulator and an even better magician, and rumors say she holds more power over the Fang than even Brendan himself...

At the time she married Brendan, Sonia already had a daughter of her own, Nino, who idolizes her mother and ceaselessly tries to make her proud.

Cquote1

 Class: Sage

Cquote2

Ephidel[]

File:Ephidel 7173.jpg

Nergal's faithful retainer, disguised as Lord Darin's faithful retainer. Ephidel is the architect of Nergal's scheme to engulf the country of Lycia in war and gather all the resulting Quintessence for himself. In fact, Ephidel owes his very existence to the Quintessence, as he is a Morph, an Artificial Human created from Quintessence to do Nergal's dirty work. Ephidel largely keeps to the shadows, planting ideas in Darin's head and making sure all the pieces are set in place for the reckoning.

Cquote1

 Class: Sage

Cquote2

Limstella[]

File:Limstella 309.jpg

Nergal's most powerful Morph, Limstella is never far from their master. Their role in Nergal's scheme is to gather Quintessence, and they execute this mission faithfully and without questioning their orders. They also serve as the Fang's executioner of sorts, disposing of those whom Nergal has deemed useless.

Cquote2

The Four Fangs[]

The brotherhood's four best killers and ranking officers below Brendan and Sonia. The roster rotates depending on the skill of the members, but has at one time or another included:

Jaffar - the Angel of Death[]

File:Jaffar 6540.jpg

The Fang's "Angel of Death" and its single best assassin, as a child Jaffar was found Atop a Mountain of Corpses by Nergal, who raised him to know nothing else but killing. Throughout the story, he handles the Fang's dirtiest jobs and nastiest dog-puntings, including the murder of Leila. His presence also helps ensure Eliwood's group does not escape with his father and Ninian from the Dragon Isle, which in part contributes to Elbert's death.

But is he all bad? See "Main characters" for the answer!

 Class: Assassin

Cquote2

Lloyd Reed - the White Wolf[]

File:Lloyd 7233.jpg
Cquote1
In the name of the Fang, I sentence you to death. Do not blame me for your fate; it is your own doing.
Lloyd, his normal battle quote in "Four Fanged Offence"
Cquote2

The elder of Brendan Reed's sons from his first marriage, Lloyd is a member of the Black Fang who carries the title "The White Wolf". He's renowned in the Fang for his tactical and strategic skill and for keeping a calm and level head, in contrast to Linus. He is absolutely loyal to the Fang and what it stands for, following his orders without question.

Cquote1

 Class: Swordmaster

Cquote2

Linus Reed - the Mad Dog[]

File:Linus 6548.jpg
Cquote1
Pray. I'll give you that much time. All the evil that you've done up to now... Repent it, and sleep.
Linus, his normal battle quote in "Four Fanged Offence"
Cquote2

The younger of Brendan Reed's two sons from his first marriage, Linus is a member of the Black Fang who carries the title "The Mad Dog". He's renowned in the Fang for being brash and impulsive, not always following orders to the letter in contrast to Lloyd. Nonetheless, he remains loyal to what the Fang stands for and follows his orders without question.

Cquote1

 Class: Hero

Cquote2

Ursula - the Blue Crow[]

File:Ursula 3267.jpg

This woman, nicnkamed "the Blue Crow", is the only female among the four Fangs. She is a coldly-efficient magic user who is under the direct orders of Sonia Reed, whom she's very loyal to.

Cquote1

 Class: Valkyrie

Cquote2

Jerme — the Death Kite[]

The Fang's "Death Kite," he used to be the organization's single best assassin, before Jaffar's arrival cost him that lofty position and his Four Fangs title. Though still maintaining a high position in the Fang, his demotion has made him bitter, and he is eager to prove himself to the leadership by any means necessary. A bloodthirsty sociopath, he has an unhealthy obsession with cutting things, and his sword, the Light Brand, can deal death up close and from far away.

Cquote1

 Class: Assassin

Cquote2

  • Ax Crazy: Knife crazy.
  • Blood Knight: With very little emphasis on 'knight' and plenty more emphasis on 'blood'. Lots and lots of blood.
  • Brainwashed and Crazy: Implied to have been darkly influenced by Nergal, as evidenced by the fact that he was the Black Fang's best assassin before Nergal started corrupting the Black Fang.
    • Pretty much confirmed when he appears as a morph in the Final Chapter, along with Kenneth. Consider that Pascal Gretzner did not appear because he was already evil without Nergal's influence, and you have a pretty strong case for this argument.
  • Bread, Eggs, Milk, Squick
Cquote1

Jerme: (to Lyn) You! Woman! You have beautiful skin. If I sliced you into lovely red ribbons with this, would the pieces be as soft and delicate as silk?

Cquote2
  • Knife Nut
  • One-Scene Wonder: Despite only appearing in one chapter, he's very unsettling and unforgettable. He does appear again in the final chapter, but as a silent morph. Unless you get Kenneth and manage to bypass him completely.
  • Remember the New Guy?: If you fought Kenneth in the Black Fang Fortress, the appearance of Jerme's corpse in the final chapter will be this.

Pascal Grentzer - the Crazed Beast[]

He was once part of the Four Fangs, known as the "Crazed Beast", but was imprisoned due to his ruthlessness. Sonia frees him and promises to restore him to his rank if he succeeds in killing the lords. He is known as the Crazed Beast because he once invited his entire city population into his castle, and proceeded to slaughter them all to ensure that one person was killed.

Cquote1

 Class: Paladin

Cquote2

  • A Million Is a Statistic: Practically the bread and butter of his philosophy — he invited all his subjects to his castle one night, and slaughtered them all just to ensure that one person was killed. Incidentally, this might well have been his Start of Darkness.
  • Aristocrats Are Evil
  • I Have You Now, My Pretty: Tries this on Sonia, of all people. She shuts him up right quick, though.
  • Karmic Death: Presumably.
  • Palette Swap: Of Bauker... who happens to be an Anti-Villain.
  • Red Baron: Known as the "Crazed Beast".
  • The Sociopath: He kills simply because he enjoys it, and slaughtered even innocents who got in his way (hence why Brendan imprisoned him). He does not, however, enjoy it so much when it happens to him.
  • Start of Darkness: When you think about it, Brendan wouldn't have let him join the Fang in the first place if he was just a ruthless sociopath from day one, even with his skill. It's possible that he'd only killed everyone initially to ensure a criminal was disposed of, found that he enjoyed it later on, and was then imprisoned. Given his brief appearance, who really knows for sure?

Heintz[]

The first ranking member of the Black Fang encountered by Lyn's party, Heintz is a Shaman sent to retrieve the wayward Nils, who had escaped Nergal's clutches with his sister. He seems to hold a very low opinion of the concept of heroism, deriding as stupidly idealistic any attempt to hinder his designs. He and his men are aware of Nergal's influence in the Fang, and appear to hold loyalty to him rather than Brendan.

Cquote1

 Class: Shaman

Cquote2

Beyard[]

The controller of the group sent to recapture Nils and Ninian following their first escape (and thus probably Heintz's supervisor), Beyard reports to Ursula of the Four Fangs. A deeply unhappy man, he lives in constant fear of failing the Fang. He confronts Lyn's group when they track Ninian's treasured ring to his fortress, and is given one last chance to kill them by Ursula.

Cquote1

 Class: Mercenary

Cquote2

Wire[]

Cquote1

“You'll go missing, never to return. Your body will never be found. Tidy story, eh?”

Cquote2

A member of the Black Fang in service to Nergal, he led a few troops in a failed attempt to assasinate Hector during his sneaking-out attempt at the start of Hector's story. Annoyed at his theatrics, Hector dispatched him fairly quickly.

Cquote1

 Class: Knight

Cquote2

Boies[]

The first member of the Black Fang Eliwood encounters on his quest, Boies is one of Ephidel's men and seems to enjoy his job a bit too much. His assignment is to stop Eliwood and company from reaching the city of Santaruz, a job he treats as a macabre game of cat and mouse. He is not above involving innocents in his conflicts, employing bandits to pillage the area surrounding Castle Santaruz.

Cquote1

 Class: Knight

Cquote2

Damian[]

Cquote1

“You're about to die. Scream if you must.”

Cquote2

The Fang member sent to intercept Eliwood's group at Badon to prevent them from getting a boat to the Dread Isle, where Nergal is located. Damian is cold and doesn't display much personality, which makes him seem perhaps the most "assassin-like" of the minor Fang members.

Cquote1

 Class: Paladin

Cquote2

Cquote1

  "Gaa...ha... Crow in...triumph... you've--"

Cquote2
  • Palette Swap: Of Wire.
  • Wake Up Call Boss: On Eliwood's mode he'll stay put if you keep out of his way, but on Hector's mode he makes a beeline straight for you no matter what.

Zoldam[]

The Fang member sent to retrieve Ninian after she escapes from Nergal's clutches at the Dragon's Gate, Zoldam pursues Ninian's small boat with two ships full of Black Fang members, boarding the Davros, with the party aboard, after they pick up Ninian. Like many other Fang members, Zoldam is icy in personality, and coldly orders the death of everyone on the ship apart from Ninian.

Cquote1

 Class: Shaman

Cquote2

Uhai[]

Cquote1
“Holding a woman hostage during battle is shameful. You, too, are of Sacae, and I've a mind to show you mercy. I will let you die with a sword in your hands. But rest assured... I will kill you all here. But be of good cheer! In dying, you shall all be spared the calamity that is to come!”
Uhai
Cquote2

The Soaring Hawk of the Black Fang. An honorable, high-ranking member of the Fang, and one of the Fang members closest to Brendan Reed's ideology. He is one of the nomads of Sacae, and as such he is an honest person who only does evil when it is necessary. Upon attacking the party, he finds something of a kindred spirit in Lyn, whom he holds hostage to get Eliwood and Hector's attention, but then releases, as he finds threatening a woman to be against his code of honor. Upon his defeat, he recognizes the party as worthy opponents, and points them to the Dragon's Gate.

Cquote1

 Class: Nomad Trooper

Cquote2

  • Anti-Villain
  • Badass Beard
  • Bow and Sword In Accord
  • Even Evil Has Standards: See his quote.
  • Face Death with Dignity
  • The Fatalist: The reason why he joined Black Fang.
  • Horse Archer: Speculated to be of the Djute tribe of Sacae, as he wears very similar clothes to the Djute bosses of Sword of Seals.
  • Nakama: He regarded the Black Fang as such before their corruption — Legault's support conversations imply Uhai was friends with him, as well as with the Reeds and Jan. This might also be why he was one of the Fangs resurrected as a morph, an honor mostly reserved for those who died after the heroes enter Bern.
  • Noble Demon: The best example in the Black Fang.
  • Red Baron: "Soaring Hawk"
  • Wake Up Call Boss: High evasion, comes at you with very dangerous eqiupment, and is sitting on a forest tile (in fog!) to make him even more frustrating. If you're trying to beat the chapter in 15 turns to get the sidequest, he becomes That One Boss and then some.
  • Worthy Opponent: Regarded the opposition as such when they killed him, motivating him to give them directions to the Dragon's Gate. Eliwood and Lyn considered him as such due to his honourable nature, as did Hector (though somewhat grudgingly so).
  • Wouldn't Hit a Girl: He would, but only if fighting against her.

Aion[]

The Black Fang's "Owl", tasked with guarding the entrance to the Dragon's Gate. Aion fancies himself incredibly intelligent, and believes that he has everything planned out for his confrontation with Eliwood's group. He doesn't count on a certain random variable to make all of his plotting for nought.

Cquote1

 Class: Sage

Cquote2

Teodor[]

The "Shadow Hawk" of the Fang, and boss of the very well hidden Chapter 19xx in Hector mode.

Cquote1

 Class: Druid

Cquote2

  • Dark Is Evil: In fact, he's the only Druid-class boss in the game.
  • Difficulty Spike / That One Boss: Teodor shows up as a level seventeen promoted boss at a point where the game is only just starting to fully phase out unpromoted bosses, and his map throws in fog of war and tons of enemies just to twist the knife. All justified though, considering that to unlock 19xx, you have to finish the story first to open up Hector mode, play through Lyn's 10 chapters again so you can raise Nils to at least level 7, advance to Hector mode, fulfill the conditions to go to 19x, and in that chapter, KO Kishuna in the one turn that you get the chance to do so before he flees. Short answer: you mostly have know what you're doing at this game to earn the right to fight Teodor.
    • Time Limit Boss: He's packing a 5-use Eclipse tome for a long range attack from the throne; if you don't rush to him and kill him before he runs it out, he equips Nosferatu and, most likely, becomes nigh invincible.
  • The Dark Side Will Make You Forget
  • Tall, Dark and Snarky: Quickly turns this way once he reveals himself as another one of Nergal's followers.

Cameron[]

Cquote1

 “You'll never leave here alive.”

Cquote2

A Black Fang member assigned to Lord Darin, he taunts the party after they arrive at the Dragon's Gate, and later engages them in battle while guarding the way to his master.

Cquote1

 Class: Paladin

Cquote2

Oleg[]

A noble Fang member who nevertheless serves Nergal's faction of the organization, Oleg is sent, following the loss at the Dragon's Gate, to the city of Badon, where he is assigned to capture Nils and Ninian and take them back to Nergal while the party is weary.

Cquote1

 Class: Warrior

Cquote2

Kenneth[]

The Fang's "Shrike", a man who gave up his faith in the gods — who he believes to be lies fabricated by mankind — to worship Nergal, who he considers the closest thing to a God the world has. Trusted by Sonia, he possessed the rare and powerful Light tome, Aura.

Cquote1

 Class: Bishop

Cquote2

Maxime[]

Ursula's lieutenant, who accompanies her to the Bern Palace to make sure that the assassins assigned to the job have successfully killed Prince Zephiel. When she finds out they haven't, she orders Maxime to douse the lights in the palace to put the enemy at a disadvantage. He later engages either Jaffar (in Eliwood Mode) or the party (in Hector Mode) in combat in the resulting battle.

Cquote1

 Class: Paladin

Cquote2

  • The Dragon: To Ursula.
  • Flat Character
  • Mini Boss: In Hector Mode, he starts closer to you, so you'll be the one fighting him, not Jaffar.
  • Palette Swap: of Cameron.
  • Suicidal Overconfidence: Tries to attack Jaffar immediately, and is very likely to die just as fast.
  • The Worf Effect: Technically, we don't know whether or not he's actually all that badass, but he is a named, non-faceless Paladin (a fairly solid promoted class overall, more or less theJackOfAllStats among classes) who more or less serves the purpose of being destroyed by Jaffar, most likely to demonstrate that Jaffar can handle himself as long as his Killing Edge lasts.
  • Yes-Man: So his lone line of dialogue implies.

Denning[]

A Morph created by Nergal after the fall of the Black Fang, Denning is sent to Castle Ostia to deliver Nergal's ultimatum to the party, who are resting there. He seems to have been created specifically for this purpose, as the only thing he is able to say is "This is a message from Lord Nergal. 'I await you on the Dread Isle'."

Cquote1

 Class: Sniper

Cquote2

  • The Archer
  • Broken Record: "This is a message from Lord Nergal..."
  • The Brute: Being The Archer aside, he's practically a classic example of this trope, what with being totally unintelligent and commanding the Mook hordes. Especially if Nergal and his Morphs are a Five-Bad Band.
  • Wake Up Call Boss: The map is designed so it is difficult to bumrush him, and gives him an easy opportunity to snipe at you with impunity.
    • Weaksauce Weakness: On the other hand, if you do manage to bumrush him and surround him, with nobody next to the people surrounding him, the battle is already decided with his defeat, provided you don't move.

Kishuna[]

A mysterious man in a red cloak who appears periodically should certain paths be taken throughout the game. He has the mysterious ability to negate all magic in a rather large vicinity of himself. He is actually the first Morph created with emotions, who was rejected by Nergal, his creator.

Cquote1

 Class: Magic Seal

Cquote2

  • Anti-Magic: His mere presence shuts down all magic within 10 spaces of him...
    • Non-Action Guy: ...and he makes no other effort to attack, instead relying on bodyguard Morphs.
  • Anti-Villain: Given how helpless he is (at least individually), and how tragic his backstory is, it's borderline impossible not to pity rather than hate him.
  • Artificial Human
  • Bonus Boss: Only appears on side chapters.
  • The Dark Chick
  • The Grostesque
  • Hidden Eyes: Which, though we never really see them, are actually Eyes of Gold, like those of every other Morph.
  • Luck-Based Mission: K Oing him in "Prisoner of Magic", a necessary step to get to 19xx in Hector mode. His HP and evasion are sky high for that point of the game, so unless you've been doing a whole bunch of grinding, it'll take some critical hits to do the job. Also, he flees on the enemy turn after you attack him, or if you take too long getting to him, so all you get is one try. Good luck. (Taking Guy's Killing Edge and giving it to Marcus seems to help.)
  • Malevolent Masked Man Or so it seems.
  • Shoot the Dog: The impression many players get if they actually play out the chapter where you kill him — hell, even the Chapter's objective says "Kill" rather than "Defeat".
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Kishuna's M.O. in his first two appearances. Once the player's party catch up to him or he is attacked, he bails.
    • Could also be percieved as a tactical retreat, something very few bosses in the game grasp the concept of.
  • Spanner in the Works (trashes Aion's traps by merely being there)
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Implied to be one for Nergal.
  • Tragic Monster
