Boyd (Bole)[]
One of the younger members of the company, Boyd is a close friend of both Ike and Mist, sharing a friendly rivalry with the former. He is the younger brother of Oscar and the older brother of Rolf; in Radiant Dawn he can serve as a Love Interest to Mist.
Class: Fighter (PoR), Warrior (RD) |
- An Axe to Grind
- Badass: A killing machine.
- Big Brother Instinct: Towards Rolf.
- Boisterous Bruiser
- Butt Monkey
- Friendly Rival: To Ike. He's determined to show him up in terms of performance, but is a loyal fighter and a good friend to him throughout both games.
- Hidden Depths
- Hot-Blooded: Moreso in Radiance.
- Hot for Teacher: Implied with Titania.
- The Lancer: To Ike in the early chapters.
- Lightning Bruiser: In the same vein as Ike. He's big, fast, deals out a frightening amount of damage, and has enough HP to make up for his low defence.
- Likes Older Women/May-December Romance: Hilariously implied, then subverted twice in his support conversations with Titania:
Boyd: Every time I look at you, Titania... I think that you're the prettiest person I've ever seen! |
- Mr. Fanservice
- Plucky Comic Relief
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: The Red to both Ike and Oscar's Blues.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: He's the Red Oni to Oscar's Blue.
- Signature Move / Attack Pattern Alpha: Boyd and his brothers can learn the Triangle Attack by fulfilling a slightly obscure sidequest during PoR; instructions here. You don't have to jump through hoops in RD since they've already learned it. Unlike previous Triangle Attacks in the series, the 3 bros have to all use Bows to initiate it.
- Slap Slap Kiss: With Mist.
- Vitriolic Best Buds: With Ike.
- You Gotta Have Green Hair
Oscar[]
Boyd and Rolf's older brother, Oscar is a calm, self-effacing young man who left the Royal Crimean Knights in order to support his brothers. He frequently serves as the voice of reason in the company and is good friends with the younger Ike.
Class: Lance Knight (PoR), Lance Paladin (RD) |
- Badass: Oscar is a tank, with excellent all around stats.
- Big Brother Mentor: Not only to his own brothers, but also to Ike in the beginning.
- Blade on a Stick
- Eyes Always Shut
- Knight in Shining Armor
- The Lancer: Subverted. Once Ike takes control of the company, it seems that Oscar will fulfil this role. Instead, he gets Demoted to Extra.
- Mr. Fanservice
- Nice Guy
- Older Sidekick: He's 24 to Ike's 17.
- Parental Abandonment: His mother died at an undetermined point in his childhood and his stepmother abandoned her son and stepsons, apparently because of the stress. Their father died shortly after. Oscar and Boyd didn't take it very well.
- Promotion to Parent: Resigned from the Crimean army to care for his two younger brothers, Boyd and Rolf, after their father died.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue Oni to Kieran and Boyd's Red Oni.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: Oscar is quiet, self-effacing, helpful, and intelligent. His younger brother Boyd is not.
- Signature Move / Attack Pattern Alpha: See Boyd.
- Supreme Chef: Many characters enjoy his meals, Ike and Ilyana amongst them.
Rhys (Kilroy)[]
The Greil Mercenaries' healer, Rhys joined up with the group after finding and healing an injured Titania. Not a well man, Rhys is often ill, and uses the money he earns at the company to support his elderly parents, as a way of paying them back for looking after him when he was younger.
Class: Priest (PoR), Bishop (RD) |
- Ill Boy: Well, "ill" might not be the right word, but he isn't quite a prime example of healthiness.
- To elaborate, in his support with Titania he explains it was impossible for him to find work before joining the Greil Mercenaries due to his weak constitution, and Rolf checks up on his fever in another support.
- Light the Way: Gains light magic use as a Bishop. Especially useful as in PoR, Light magic and Staves share the same weapon level slot. (He's also the only user of Light magic you'll recruit in PoR, save for trial map characters.)
- Holy Hand Grenade: Has the potential to use Rexaura in both games, however, since he's lacking in Speed (not to mention, he'll barely be able to lift it in PoR) it's more Awesome but Impractical.
- To say nothing of even getting your hands on Rexaura in PoR! It's only found in the hands of an enemy Bishop in the final chapter, and he doesn't drop it automatically, so you have to resort to other trickery to make him unequip it so it can be stolen.
- Holy Hand Grenade: Has the potential to use Rexaura in both games, however, since he's lacking in Speed (not to mention, he'll barely be able to lift it in PoR) it's more Awesome but Impractical.
- The Medic
- Mr. Fanservice: Has his fair share of fangirls, due to being slightly helpless.
- Nice Guy
- No Pronunciation Guide: It's 'Reese' not 'Rise'. Blame the Welsh.
- Savvy Guy, Energetic Girl: The former to Mia, who he develops a close friendship with.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The former to Kieran.
- Uke: Even with Mia--perhaps ESPECIALLY with Mia--he would most likely be this.
- White Magician Guy
Shinon[]
The Greil Mercenaries' archer, Shinon has a very high opinion of himself, one that he isn't afraid to share with the other members of the company. Close friends with Gatrie, Shinon despises Ike, and leaves the company after the latter takes command, joining up with Daein. Ultimately, though, he returns to the group.
Class: Sniper (PoR and RD) |
- The Ace: According to his epilogue he is a master of anything he tries.
- The Archer
- The Alcoholic
- Badass
- Cold Sniper
- Deadpan Snarker
- Double Entendre: His conversation with Aimee sounds like this, at first. Turns out he's actually selling her bows to make some cash for the group.
- Drunk Personality Change: Subverted. His drunken personality is pretty much his normal one with the asshattery dialled Up to Eleven.
- Evil Redhead: But only for a while. He's still mean, though.
- Face Heel Turn: Joins Daein's side during the first war, but can be convinced to rejoin after a beating. As for his reasons for joining Daein, it's because he appreciates that the Daein Army doesn't care about social status, only about strength which can hint about what might have happened to him in the past.
- Fantastic Racism: Pretty much just plain trolls Lethe's sister.
- Good Is Not Nice: When on Ike's side, at least.
- Heterosexual Life Partners: With Gatrie
- Hidden Depths: While a Jerkass most of the time, paying attention to his support with Janaff can hint at why he's such a racist. Also, if you attack him with other characters in the chapter you're suppose to recruit him, you can find more hints about his backstory through talking with characters that aren't Boyd and Soren such as him ranting on about how Daein didn't care about social status and Begnion did. This hints that he might have tried to get on Begnion's side first but they rejected him because of appearance.
- Jerkass: Most of the time. Around Gatrie or Rolf, he's more of a Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
- Morality Pet: Secretly teaches Rolf archery because he has talent. He does this expecting no type of repayment, and even scolds Rolf for tying to pay him back for the lessons.
- Noble Bigot
- Pet the Dog: Despite his major attitude problem, he does have a soft spot for Rolf, and certain scenes show that he makes bows to help bring in money for the group, but he makes Aimee promise not to tell Ike about it.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: At first seems to be subverted with the red-haired Shinon seeming cool and collected compared to the blue-armored Gatrie who's rather boisterous and a flirt. However it turns out that it's actually played straight once Shinon's short temper and drinking habit comes to light, while Gatrie turns out to actually be rather laid back.
- The Resenter: Big time towards Ike.
- Rival Turned Evil
- Tall, Dark and Snarky
- Undying Loyalty: To Greil, and he can't really bring himself to leave when you see him in Radiant Dawn, even under Ike's leadership.
Gatrie[]
A heavily-armoured footsoldier who serves as the team muscle during Greil's tenure as leader, Gatrie is a cheerful flirt who is good friends with Shinon. He leaves following the leadership change, but rejoins some time later, when the woman he is bodyguarding signs up with Ike.
Class: Knight (PoR), Lance General (RD) |
- Badass
- The Big Guy: Probably the most archetypal, being a Mighty Glacier and Boisterous Bruiser par excellence.
- Blade on a Stick
- Boisterous Bruiser
- Bodyguard Crush: On Astrid in Path of Radiance.
- Butt Monkey
- Chivalrous Pervert/Handsome Lech
- Heterosexual Life Partners: With Shinon
- Hopeless Suitor
- Looking for Love In All the Wrong Places
- Mighty Glacier: Very slow, and with poor movement range, but nearly impossible to damage.
- In Radiant Dawn however he returns with a 60% Growth in speed (this is higher than any other Greil Mercenary besides Mia), as well as high Strength and Defense, turning him into a Game Breaker Lightning Bruiser.
Mia (Wayu)[]
A cheerful and relentlessly hyperactive Myrmidon who joins the company after Greil saved her life, Mia is forever seeking the perfect opponent. She becomes a permanent member of the Greil Mercenaries and continues to serve with them into Radiant Dawn.
Class: Myrmidon (PoR), Swordmaster (RD) |
- Action Girl
- Badass
- Badass Longcoat: Acquires one upon reaching her highest class.
- Badass Normal
- Combat Pragmatist: One could view her Vantage skill as this, since it always allows her to attack first.
- Fragile Speedster: At first.
- Lightning Bruiser: She can grow into this.
- Genki Girl: Hoo boy...
- Hot-Blooded
- Ms. Fanservice / Fetish Fuel Station Attendant
- Detached Sleeves
- Fan Service Pack: Between games.
- Hot Chick with a Sword
- She's Got Legs
- Zettai Ryouiki: Her outfit before promotion is a Type A.
- After promotion as well in Radiant Dawn, but only when viewed from the front.
- Spirited Competitor: Challenging Ike to duels is apparently a regular thing among the Greil Mercenaries. She never wins, but that doesn't seem to bother her.
- Stay in the Kitchen: Her backstory, leading to her becoming almost Determinator-like in proving her worth as a fighter.
- Worthy Opponent: She is constantly on a search for hers after a fortune-teller predicted said rival's existence.
Ilyana (Elaice)[]
A quiet, soft-spoken mage with a voracious metabolism, Ilyana is initially encountered in Daien's employ but quickly joins up with Ike upon the revelation that he is protecting the caravan that she was originally travelling with.
Class: Mage (PoR), Thunder Mage (RD) |
- Action Girl: Don't forget, being a Squishy Wizard means that despite being frail, her magic can still pack a punch.
- Awesome but Impractical: She's the most likely candidate to use Rexbolt (the S-Rank thunder tome, and one of few ultimate weapons not to be Dummied Out of the game), however, her low Strength and Speed means she won't be able to use it effectively in Po R. It's much, much more useful in Radient Dawn.
- Badass Adorable
- Big Eater: Her enormous appetite defines her.
- Goes so far as to start munching on Mia's boots if she isn't fed.
- Dangerously-Short Skirt
- The Ingenue: She's a rather sweet person.
- Panty Shot: Every battle before promotion in Po R. Much nerfed in RD (Only when attacking through a barricade, which are very rare, though in the first and 2nd chapter she is useable in)
- Shock and Awe: Though she can use fire, thunder, and wind magic, thunder magic is her specialty.
- Shrinking Violet
- Squishy Wizard: So freakin' much. "Fragile" is a bit of an understatement.
- Zettai Ryouiki: Only in Radiant Dawn and only after promoting to second tier. Upon reaching third tier, she technically no longer has it, but the slightly-too-long skirt is semitransparent so she sort of still does.
Rolf (Yofa)[]
The younger half-brother of Boyd and Oscar, Rolf is the youngest member of the company and a close friend of Ike's little sister, Mist. Fed up with feeling useless he joins the fighting partway through Path of Radiance, having been trained in archery by Shinon.
Class: Archer (PoR), Sniper (RD) |
- Adorably Precocious Child: He tries to act grown up, but he's not all that good at it and no one really takes it seriously anyway.
- The Archer
- Badass Adorable
- Child Soldier: His status as one is addressed in a support conversation with Mist, where he comments on how much colder he's gotten over the course of the game.
- Friendly Sniper
- Keet
- Little Mr. Badass: If you take the time to train him.
- He's even got boss dialogue with Muarim!
- Magikarp Power: In Radiance, he joins at Level 1 at a point in the game where most of the Greil Mercenaries should be in their mid-teens or so, but if you take the time and effort to train him up, he arguably surpasses Shinon as a Sniper. It helps that two of the chapters after he joins have Ravens as enemies, which makes it a little easier for him to catch up.
- Morality Pet: To Shinon, his mentor.
- Not a Game: Mist worries that he doesn't realise this isn't a game. He's fully aware, actually.
- Signature Move / Attack Pattern Alpha: See Boyd.
- Took a Level In Badass
Marcia[]
A former Begnion Pegasus Knight, Marcia was forced to leave in order to search for her idiot brother, Makalov. Ike first meets her when she is attacking a pirate ship; when he and his sellswords help her out of the jam she has gotten herself into she joins them.
Class: Pegasus Knight (PoR), Falcon Knight (RD) |
- Action Girl
- Badass Adorable
- Blade on a Stick
- Genki Girl
- Gosh Dang It to Heck!: She often comes out with odd euphemisms, such as "Oh crackers!"
- Plucky Comic Relief
- Promotion to Parent: She has her hands full trying to prevent the vices of her older brother, Malakov, from getting him into trouble.
- Zettai Ryouiki: Most likely Type A. Only in PoR, though, as all of the Pegasus units wear tights under their skirts in RD.
Lethe[]
A Cat-tribe Laguz with a near pathological hatred of Beorc, Lethe and her subordinate, Mordecai, are assigned to Ike by the King of Gallia. Sharp-tongued, and with a vicious temper, she eventually moves past her hatred, forming close friendships with Ike and Jill
Class: Cat (PoR and RD) |
- Action Girl
- Badass
- Catgirl
- Defrosting Ice Queen: She changes quite a bit in the span of three years between Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn.
- Fantastic Racism: Has... a bit of disdain for Beorc.
- Fetish Fuel Station Attendant
- Fragile Speedster
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold
- Noble Bigot: At times she's practically the Distaff Counterpart to Shinon.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: Yin to her sister.
- Tsundere
Mordecai (Mordy)[]
Lethe's subordinate, Mordecai is a Tiger-tribe Laguz with a cheerful demeanour and an incomplete command of the Beorc tongue. He bears no ill-will towards the Beorc and often reprimands Lethe for her racist behaviour; he is quick to make friends with all the members of the company.
Class: Tiger (PoR and RD) |
- The Big Guy: Can fullfill this role in much the same way as Gatrie.
- Eloquent in My Native Tongue
- Friend to All Living Things
- Gentle Giant
- Mighty Glacier
Volke[]
A cold-blooded Thief and Assassin in Greil's employ, Volke signs on with Ike following the latter's departure from the game. A shadowy man who keeps mostly to himself, Volke is revealed to be one of the few characters who is in the know about the overall plot of Path of Radiance.
Class: Thief (PoR), Assassin (RD) |
- Badass
- Cool Mask: After outing himself as an Assassin.
- Career Killers: He may offer his services to Ike as a Thief, but Volke's actually an infamous Assassin.
- Catch Phrase: "Ten thousand (gold)."
- Change Of Plans:
Izuka: You! You're... |
- Consummate Professional
- Dramatic Unmask: Inverted. When he reveals his true identity, he puts a mask on.
- Eleventh-Hour Ranger: In RD, and how. There's a good reason he waits until one chapter from the end to show up: he's getting off criticals 1/3rd of the time at least, never mind when he activates Lethality!
- Hates Small Talk: Volke only speaks to convey information and has no time for conversation outside of those specific parameters.
- Hero-Killer: Greil hired him due to his reputation as one. After Ike learns Greil's secrets from him, Volke makes the very same offer to him, just in case Ike was to go berserk like his father did.
- Knife Nut
- Lack of Empathy: Volke doesn't even bat an eye at the news of Greil's death and doesn't give a damn about the carnage around him. All that matters to him is getting paid.
- Master of Unlocking: Volke opens doors and chests for you... but in a suprise dose of realism, he charges you 50 gold per lock (until he promotes).
- Meaningful Name: Volke can translate as either "wolf" or "alone".
- No Hero Discount: In RD, it is set up to do this. Never mind that the world's on the verge of ending, he will just stand there in 4-5 and watch the battle play out unless Elincia or Bastian goes to him and coughs up 3,000 gold. A true businessman to the end. Subverted Trope when it turns out that he comes with Peshkatz, the best throwing knife in the game, which will cost you a stifling 12,900 gold to buy another one of before the Endgame. So you're getting four times your money's worth on an awesome weapon, and essentially getting Volke (with his great stats and skills) for free. A very good deal indeed. Wait, that's not even the best part: recruiting him is the only way to unlock a certain base convo before the Endgame, in which Volke unloads 20,000 gold into your coffers!
- Only in It For the Money: Ultimately, Volke's only alliance is with those who have the money to pay him. It's also played for laughs when people want to just know a personal fact about him (10,000 gold), or to get him to do something which requires little effort, such as...
Ike: I don't want Mist roaming the ship with a plate of food anymore. So please, eat one meal a day with us. |
- He will make an exception when dealing with certain people, though.
- Phantom Thief: Advertises himself as one when dealing with Ike; he's later outed as a professional killer.
- Punch Clock Hero
- Scarf of Asskicking
- Secret Keeper: For Greil.
- Secret Test of Character: Charges Ike with paying him 50,000 gold as a way of testing his maturity, and therefore his readiness to learn his father's secrets.
- Single-Stroke Battle: With his own personal skill as an Assassin class, he does have the ability to kill any enemy not classified as a boss. Yes, even Laguz tank-like health and defense.
- Sticky Fingers: In PoR only, he can lift weapons and items off of most units.
- The Stoic
- Think Nothing of It: When reuniting with Ike in Radiant Dawn (just before the Tower of Guidance Endgame no less), Volke gives him the leftover gold from his contract during the Mad King's War. Ike expresses his gratitude for not just the money, but for his services and telling him of his father's past. Volke leaves rather quickly, embarrassed, which surprises Ike. Something of a Pet the Dog moment.
- Token Evil Teammate: Bordering on the sociopathic.
Kieran (Kevin)[]
A member of the Crimean Royal Knights and an old friend/rival of Oscar's, Kieran is brave, courageous, and more than a tad foolhardy. Rescued from a Daien prison by the Greil Mercenaries, he joins the Crimean Liberation Force to help win Elincia's throne back.
Class: Axe Knight (PoR), Axe Paladin (RD) |
Kieran: "This one time a sellsword tried to jam hot coals inside my--" |
- Badass: With his tendency towards throwing himself into danger he pretty much has to be.
- Fiery Redhead
- Genki Guy
- Hot-Blooded
- Keet: So much that we had to add both this and Genki Guy.
- Large Ham
- Lightning Bruiser: Although his character focuses on strength, he gets pretty fast too. Becomes less so in Radiant Dawn.
- Mr. Fanservice
- The Munchausen
- Noodle Incident: Quite a few. He's very eager to tell Rhys about the time he fought the "Giant Scorpions" or the "Mad Crocodile", but Rhys never lets him finish because of how violent his tales tend to be.
- No Indoor Voice
- Only a Flesh Wound: Has this to say for many of his training injuries. Once he gets an axe stuck in his head and only says "Ooh, that's sharp!"
- The Rival: To Oscar, although Oscar just seems oblivious to Kieran's constant attempts to affirm himself as Oscar's rival (or ignores him altogether).
- Friendly Rival: He may want to show Oscar up, but he certainly doesn't dislike him, and actually seems to think the two of them are buddies.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: He's the Red Oni to either Oscar or Geoffrey's Blue Oni.
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The Manly Man to Rhys' sensitive guy.
- Unknown Rival: To Oscar.
- Those Two Guys: With Oscar and/or Geoffrey, depending on the game.
Nephenee[]
A Crimean farm girl from a small peasant village, Nephenee was recruited into the militia during the war with Daien. Shy, nervous, and terrified of embarassing herself with her rural manners and heavy accent, Nephenee nevertheless joins the Crimean Liberation Force to aid in freeing her homeland.
Class: Soldier (PoR), Halberdier (RD) |
- Action Girl
- Badass: Even more so when you remember that she's a militiawoman and not a trained soldier.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Quiet, shy, polite, and has zero self esteem. Along with Brom, she pretty much puts down a rebellion in her town single handedly, and in the meta-game, she's considered one of the most powerful units in RD.
- Blade on a Stick: As a Soldier she specialises in Lances.
- Country Mouse
- Farm Girl
- Lady of War: Quiet, shy, nervous in company, and will skewer your punk ass if try and hurt her friends.
- Lightning Bruiser: In spite of her having a somewhat crummy Strength growth, you get lots of time to fix that in both games, and she gets above average Speed and Skill to make up the slack. Promote her to tier 3 in RD and Nephenee will be Impaling people left and right.
- Magikarp Power: Mild example in PoR; she's off to a slow start with only an E rank in Lances. It often takes using up a rare Arms Scroll to get her caught up in a timely manner.
- Not So Stoic: She looks like a stoic, badass soldier girl, but when you read her dialogue, she actually turns out to be a Shrinking Violet Country Mouse.
- Panty Shot: In Path of Radiance, you can see up her skirt when she attacks. It's more noticeable when she performs a critical hit.
- The Quiet One: She prefers not to talk because of her accent.
- Shrinking Violet
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair
- Zettai Ryouiki: Her Halberdier outfit is Grade A.
- Her Soldier outfit (from Path of Radiance) and her Sentinel outfit (from Radiant Dawn) both also come to just over the knee, making it a borderline B/C.
Brom (Chap)[]
Class: Knight (PoR), Axe General (RD) |
- Big Fun
- Blade on a Stick: In PoR.
- An Axe to Grind: Switches to these instead in RD for some reason.
- Cool Old Guy
- Counter Attack: Starts with Disarm in RD, specializing him in making sure someone can't do this trope for the rest of the turn.
- Gentle Giant
- Mighty Glacier
- Shipper on Deck: He constantly tries to set Zihark up with one of his daughters in their support conversations.
- Stout Strength
Zihark[]
A capable swordsman who was once in a relationship with a Laguz, Zihark infiltrates Laguz-hunting parties in order to help their victims escape. A citizen of Daein, Zihark resents the way that the Laguz are treated in his nation, and joins up with Ike to try and do something about it. He later becomes a member of Micaiah's Dawn Brigade to try and help free Daein from Begnion's control.
Class: Myrmidon (PoR), Swordmaster (RD) |
- Badass
- Conflicting Loyalty — between his loyalty to Daein and the laguz in Radiant Dawn.
- Fragile Speedster: Very fast, and capable of inflicting a lot of damage, but lacking in HP and Defence.
- Friend to All Living Things
- Hidden Depths
- Interspecies Romance: With a female Laguz in the backstory.
- The Mole: Infiltrates Laguz-Hunting Groups for the purpose of saving Laguz.
- The Mourning After: It's heavily implied that his relationship with his girlfriend ended badly.
- Mr. Fanservice
- Nice Guy
- Odd Friendship: With Brom and Ilyana.
- Scars Are Forever — There's one under his eye; hard to see in the official art, but it's there.
- Tranquil Fury: Pit him against Izuka. Congratulations, you have just set his sights on the one man he admits he will kill with a mind clouded in anger and hatred.
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair/White-Haired Pretty Boy: Has blue-white hair.
Jill Fizzart[]
The daughter of Daein General Shiharam Fizzart, Jill has grown up hating Laguz and believing that might makes right. She allies with Ike when she sees the latter's ship under attack from Kilvas Ravens; after seeing Lethe and Mordecai in action she begins to question what she was taught as a child, ultimately joining Ike's army, where she becomes close friends with Mist and Lethe.
Class: Wyvern Rider/Dragonknight (PoR and RD) |
- A Boy and His X: A Girl And Her Wyvern. That is a very happy-looking dragon.
- Action Girl
- An Axe to Grind: Her main weapon of choice in Radiant Dawn. Gains it upon promotion in Path of Radiance. In Radiant Dawn, she is the only female in the entire series to wield axes before promotion.
- Blade on a Stick: Her main weapon of choice in Path of Radiance. Gains it upon promotion in Radiant Dawn.
- Badass
- Colour-Coded for Your Convenience: In an army of black-armoured Wyvern Riders who fly on grey wyverns, Jill's dressed in pink and flies on a green wyvern. She's the one you can promote.
- Defrosting the Ice Queen
- Dragon Rider
- Evil Redhead: Subverted in that she was a soldier from Daein and pretty much raised to hate Laguz. But ultimately averted in that after some defrosting she turns out to be a rather nice girl with good morals.
- Face Heel Revolving Door
- Fiery Redhead
- Fragile Speedster: Starts out as one.
- Lightning Bruiser: Grows into one upon promotion in both games.
- Heel Face Turn: Several times.
- May-December Romance: Her relationship with Haar, if she reaches A-support.
- She's Got Legs: Which her armour nicely shows off.
- This Is Unforgivable!: If she and Ashnard battle in the final chapter the brief exchange she has causes her to completely lose it and scream this before she (futilely) attacks him.
Jill: ...Ashnard... Ashnard!! ASHNARD!! I... will never forgive you! NEVER!!! |
Astrid (Stella)[]
Hailing from one of Begnion's noble families, Astrid left home and became a knight in order to try and make her own way in the world. Aboard the Apostle's ship when it is attacked by Daein, Astrid and her bodyguard, Gatrie, join the fighting and are recruited by Ike and Elincia; Astrid eventually joins the Crimean Royal Knights.
Class: Bow Knight (PoR), Bow Paladin (RD) |
- Action Girl: Well, in this game anyway. Not so much in the sequel.
- Arranged Marriage: To Lekain, of all people. Fortunately, she manages to escape before the marriage can take place. If you bring her into the Tower of Guidance in Dawn, she can have the pleasure of offing him herself.
- Badass Adorable: If you level her up enough, she'll become one of the strongest fighters in your squad in Path of Radiance. Not so much anymore in Radiant Dawn.
- Blue Blood
- Friendly Sniper: Painfully nervous and adorably Moe sniper.
- Horse Archer: The only one in the game. Oddly she's a Bow Knight/Bow Paladin rather than a separate class.
- Lady of War: A quiet, shy Proper Lady who will put a sheaf of arrows in your face before you can blink.
- Magikarp Power: Her Paragon skill allows her to grow quite fast but, due to her low joining level, training her requires some dedication.
- Proper Lady: She didn't like the role and its why she ran away; still acts like it with her proper demeanor
- Rebellious Princess: Rebellious noble anyway.
- Shrinking Violet
- Stay in the Kitchen: After she sees all the noblewomen around her being forced into unhappy marriages, Astrid resolves to escape that fate and becomes a knight.
- Took a Level In Badass
- What Does She See in Him?: Many characters and players alike question her infatuation with Makalov.
Makalov[]
Marcia's older brother. More or less obsessed with gambling and doing as little work as possible. Also quite possibly the biggest Jerkass in the entire game. Somehow, he ends up in a romantic relationship of sorts with Astrid in Radiant Dawn.
Class: Sword Knight (PoR), Blade Paladin (RD) |
- Consummate Liar: Has a habit of lying through his teeth. Repeatedly. Even to characters who he knows will suss him out.
- Butt Monkey: On top of all the characters who genuinely can't stand his guts, even his horse (which looks more like a donkey) doesn't seem to like him.
- For the Evulz: Somewhat... Makalov doesn't really have much of an excuse to be as much of a dickbag as he is beyond the fact that he apparently gets kicks out of it. That said, he is capable of feeling remorse, however... but only after he's been pulled back from crossing some serious moral lines.
- The Gambler: Much to the frustration of his sister, Marcia.
- Getting Crap Past the Radar / Does This Remind You of Anything?: Some Wild Mass Guessing has led fans to believe that Makalov's Herb in his inventory is a sign that he's basically a fantastic druggie. This wouldn't normally warrant being on the character page but, if you consider how much his sister tries to keep him on the straight and narrow to an extent that seems excessive for someone who's just plain lazy, it would make a lot of sense.
- Gonk: Even Marcia thinks his haircut is ridiculous.
- Jerkass: Without doubt the single-biggest douchebag in the entire franchise. Unlike other gamblers, like Joshua, Makalov is not a good person at heart and repeatedly lies and cheats to get his way... and, even when he doesn't, still keeps on doing it.
- Jerk with a Heart of Jerk: Gets recruited into Ike's army by his sister so that she can stop searching for him... immediately starts to plot how he's going to get off his workload. Not to mention the fact that he basically tries to sell Astrid's memento pendant so he can go gambling.
- Lazy Bum
- Real Men Wear Pink
- The Slacker: Unfortunately for him, his new employer Ike overhears and puts an end to that.
"You were talking out loud. Loudly." |
- Work Off the Debt: And holy moly, Ike enforces it like dropping an anvil on Makalov's head. Ike informs him that he's racked up quite a few outstanding debts all over the continent. Since they can't be having debt collectors hounding the mercenaries day after day, Soren paid them all off... out of the company coffers. That means Makalov is now in debt up to his eyeballs to one person: Ike. Guess who's collecting all his wages until it's repaid!
Stefan (Soanevalcke)[]
A mysterious swordsman who joins Ike's army in the Grann Desert hoping to speak to the beast laquz. He is actually a branded; the descendent of a union between a beorc and a laquz, and leads a small village of his kind hidden in the desert.
Class: Swordmaster (PoR), Trueblade (RD) |
- Badass
- Badass Creed: "I am the desert, and I brook no intrusions. Make peace with your goddess."
- Berserk Button: Seeing a branded being attacked.
- Cool Sword: Not to mention one of the best ones in the game: Vague Katti.
- Famous Ancestor: It is suggested (but never outright stated) that Stefan is descended from Soan, one of Ashera's Three Heroes. Most of this is due to the similarity between his Japanese name (Soanvalke) and Soan's.
- Go Mad From the Revelation: Briefly. When Yune tells him the entire basis for the persecution of the branded is made up, he is so stunned and horrified at the injustice that he's unable to do anything but laugh his head off.
- Half-Human Hybrid
- Hidden Branded Village: The leader of one. His ending has him turn it into its own country that he rules as king.
- Master Swordsman
- Mentor: After he's recruited in Path of Radiance, he offers to train Ike to fight better. You accept and can earn an Occult Scroll, which you use to learn a unique battle skill (in Ike's case, Aether).
- Older Than They Look: He's the one who explains who this trope affects the branded. He himself appears to be in his late twenties. Given the other two branded units appear to be teenagers while actually being in the twenties, it's safe to say he's much older.
- Peek-a-Bangs: It's how he hides his brand.
- Warrior Poet
- You Gotta Have Green Hair
Tormod (Topuck)[]
Class: Mage (PoR), Fire Sage (RD) |
- A Boy and His Laguz: His relationship with Muarim
- Bratty Half-Pint: Somewhat in Path of Radiance.
- Crutch Character and Can't Catch Up: His availability in RD is among the worst. He joins near the end of Part 1, promoted to tier 2 already and kicking ass... then you don't see hide nor hair of the kid until two chapters before the end of Part 4. By which point the rest of the world, and the game, has passed him by.
- He also can't keep up with Sothe's growth, literally.
- Child Mage
- Fragile Speedster: A laguz taught him how to run after all.
- Incoming Ham: "SOOOOOOOOOTHE!!"
- Keet
- Magikarp Power
- No Indoor Voice
- No Social Skills
- Playing with Fire: Like all mages, he can use fire, thunder, and wind magic, but fire is his specialty.
- The Napoleon: The first time he sees Sothe and (MUCH later) Ike in the sequel, he comments how annoyed he is at how much they've grown, while he's still short.
Muarim[]
Class: Tiger (PoR and RD) |
- Badass
- Crutch Character: See Tormod and Vika in RD. Fortunately, Muarim avoids the fate of Can't Catch Up and his stats are still good enough for late Part 4 to put up a fight.
- Gentle Giant
- Made a Slave
- Parental Substitute: For Tormod.
Devdan/Danved (Dalahowe/Wuhalada)[]
Class: Halberdier (PoR and RD) |
- Adult Child: His manner of speech implies this, but his Hidden Depths indicate a subversion as they show him to be a very insightful Team Dad.
- Apologetic Attacker: He actually asks for forgiveness before he attacks the player.
- Blade on a Stick
- Bling of War: He wears gold plate armour, not unlike a certain Babylonian king.
- Awesome Yet Practical: In-universe. Wearing plate armour is always going to be handy in this series and his is, well, gold for extra cool points.
- Cloudcuckoolander
- Eloquent in My Native Tongue: Vaguely implied. He never says he's from another land, but his Base conversations especially show that he is much brighter than he sounds and his simplistic sentence structure seems to indicate a person limited by their grasp of a language rather than one who's just too stupid to get it given how many intelligent things he comes out with despite his simplistic vocabulary.
- Fun Personified: Every second sentence he says seems to be an attempt to get people to lighten up and be more easygoing.
- Hidden Depths: His manner of speech initially suggests that he's not too bright, but his supports reveal him to be a very socially insightful man who also has a talent for ventriloquism.
- Let's Get Dangerous:
"Danved is pretty striking. Don't worry, Danved will show you just how striking he can be." |
- Love Freak: He more or less tells Ike that, if he focuses only on fighting and preparation and never bothers to appreciate the beauty in nature and life, he'll never defeat his enemies. He's really not wrong at all, considering how one wins over allies in this franchise.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: You would think that the only black character in the game's world being a Cloudcuckoolander would carry some Unfortunate Implications, but as it turns out Devdan is a lot brighter than he looks. For starters, he's a responsible man who offers fatherly advice to both Nephenee and Tormod about looking out for oneself in battle and outside of it, not to mention the fact that he's such a good ventriloquist that he can bring a terrible stick-figure drawing to life without even moving his lips.
- Salt and Pepper: Played straight in his support with Nephenee. Race-inverted with Tormod.
- Split Personality
- Third Person Person
- Token Minority
- Willfully Weak: Implied. He states that he'll attempt to restrain himself during battle. Whether this is because of his merciful nature or because he's holding back his strength is unclear.
- Wouldn't Hurt a Child: Which turns out to be the key to recruiting him in Path of Radiance. Only Mist, Soren, Tormod, Sothe, and Rolf can talk to him.
- You Gotta Have Green Hair
Tanith (Tanis)[]
Class: Falcon Knight (PoR and RD) |
- Action Girl
- Badass
- Cool Sword/Blow You Away: Starts with a sword that can control wind.
- Four-Star Badass
- Lethal Chef: She wants to take lessons from Oscar, confessing she put a good few soldiers out of commission with her cooking once.
- Mook Maker: Her "Reinforcements" skill can do this for your side.
- She can summon a Falcon Knight that is STRONGER than her with it. Unfortunately, this skill was removed in Radiant Dawn.
Ulki (Vulci)[]
Class: Hawk (PoR and RD) |
- Informed Loner: Mocked by Janaff
- Super Senses: Supposedly most laguz have them to a degree but his hearing is remarkable even among them
- The Quiet One
- The Stoic
- Those Two Guys: With Janaff.
Janaff[]
Class: Hawk (PoR and RD) |
- Bishonen
- Keet
- Mr. Fanservice
- Older Than They Look: He shocks Oscar and Shinon with being just over 110 years old. But even for laguz standards, you wouldn't guess he was older than Ulki.
- Those Two Guys: With Ulki.
Calill[]
Class: Sage (PoR), Fire Sage (RD) |
- Battle Couple: With her boyfriend, and later husband, Largo.
- Cool Big Sis: For Nephenee. Some fans choose to take it further.
- Knife Nut: In the first game.
- Happily Married: To Largo, as of Radiant Dawn.
- Hot Mom: In Radiant Dawn.
- Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Largo.
- Lady of Black Magic
- The Mentor: To Tormod.
- Playing with Fire: She's better with fire magic in the sequel. She's equally proficent with wind and thunder magic in the first game.
- Show Some Leg: Her attire invokes this.
- Sword and Sorcerer: She's a Fire Sage, her partner, Largo, is a Berserker with An Axe to Grind.
Tauroneo[]
Class: General (PoR), Lance General (RD) |
- Badass
- Blade on a Stick
- Death Seeker: In Path of Radiance, as his recruitment conversation shows. Teaming up with Ike helps to cure him of it.
- Defector From Decadence: Divorced and bereft of all but his honour as a soldier, Tauroneo is waiting to die when he encounters Ike. The latter convinces him to go on living and recruits him into his forces.
- Heel Face Turn
- Wouldn't Hurt a Child
Haar[]
General Shiharam of Daein's right-hand man, Haar is the son that the older man never had. Although a terrifyingly powerful combatant, Haar is a peaceful man at heart who would rather sleep than fight, often dozing off in the middle of battles. He has known Jill forever, and can be recruited by her following her father's death.
Class: Wyvern Lord/Dragonmaster (PoR and RD) |
- An Axe to Grind: In both games.
- Blade on a Stick: Also in both games.
- A Boy and His X: A Man And His Wyvern. Judging from some of Haar's dialogue his partner is as lazy as he is.
- Badass
- Bunny Ears Lawyer: A Lazy Bum and Sleepyhead who doubles as a Lightning Bruiser Dragon Rider.
- Death Seeker: In Path of Radiance after Shiharam is killed, Haar decides to go down fighting against Petrine. His death quote also seems to imply it in Radiant Dawn.
- The Dragon: To General Shiharam.
- Dragon Rider
- Eyepatch of Power
- Lazy Bum: Haar has no interest in fighting.
- Lightning Bruiser: Fast, powerful, and tanks a ton of hits. Especially highlighted in Part 2 and 3, but in Part 4...
- Mighty Glacier: Once Part 4 comes around, Haar can't catch up to some enemy units, speed wise. However, he still has one of the highest Strength and Defense caps (and the growths to reach it) of all Beorc.
- May-December Romance: With Jill, if he reaches A support in Radiant Dawn.
- Mentor: To Jill, his boss' daughter.
- Mr. Fanservice
- Ninja Pirate Robot Zombie: He's got an eyepatch, a trusty dragon to ride on, a habit of sleeping in battles, but when he does fight, few can stand in his way.
- Opposites Attract: With the fiery, Hot-Blooded, and much younger Jill.
- Optional Boss: In the level he's recruited in in Path of Radiance. He can't be fought in Radiant Dawn, but he is an optional recruit there as well.
- Perpetual Frowner
- Sleepyhead
- Worth Living For: If Jill snaps him out of his Death Seeker mentality.
Bastian (Ulysses)[]
Class: Sage (PoR), Arch Sage (RD) |
- Bunny Ears Lawyer
- Blow You Away: A Sage who specializes in Wind magic.
- Gratuitous Iambic Pentameter: Does this all the time in Radiance, eases up on it in Dawn.
- Knife Nut: In FE9.
- Obfuscating Stupidity: During Daein's occupation of Crimea, Bastian laid low by disguising himself as a street performer. Or is he a street performer disguised as a court official? Good question.
Elincia: I'm sure it suited him perfectly. Did he juggle and gambol about? Hee hee!! |
- The Strategist: Especially in Radiant Dawn.
- Ye Olde Butcherede Englishe
Lucia (Luchino)[]
Class: Swordmaster (PoR and RD) |
- Action Girl
- Can't Catch Up: Path of Radiance has her with positively absurd growths on par with the Laguz but very few levels to make use of them. Radiant Dawn gives her a grand total of one playable chapter before Part 4, and she won't have the stats to keep up without plenty of babying (though bringing her up to competence isn't exactly difficult, just a bit resource-intensive).
- Hot Chick with a Sword
- Peek-a-Bangs
- Lady of War
- Sequence Breaking: Radiant Dawn Lucia has Swordmaster models for before and after her haircut, but her Trueblade model is only for after. This is because the Japanese version required units to use items to promote, as per series standard; therefore, Lucia wouldn't have been able to promote before her haircut. The US version removed this requirement, allowing promotion by leveling up past Level 20. This means that should Lucia solo 2-2 and get enough experience to promote, she will already have undergone her haircut before it happens in the story. Don't think too hard about where Ludveck gets the hair to send to Elincia in this case.
- Supreme Chef: She's another good cook, according to Ilyana.
- Thigh-High Boots
- Traumatic Haircut
- You Gotta Have Blue Hair
Geoffrey[]
Class: Paladin (PoR), Lance Paladin (RD) |
- The Archer
- Badass
- Bishonen
- Bodyguard Crush: On Elincia. It's so painfully obvious that Calill gives up on him without even trying.
- Red Oni, Blue Oni: Blue to Kieran's red.
- Victorious Childhood Friend/Unlucky Childhood Friend: Depending on whether he gets the A-support with Elincia, he can end up as either one.
Largo[]
Class: Berserker (PoR) |
- An Axe to Grind
- Badass
- Battle Couple: With Calill
- The Berserker: Though only in combat. Outside of it he's a remarkably cheerful guy.
- The Big Guy
- Boisterous Bruiser
- Demoted to Extra: The only unit in FE9 to not be playable in the sequel (this is due to losing his arm in the interim between the two game).
- Dumb Muscle: He's rather slow, though not to a ridiculous degree.
- Glass Cannon: Has a metric ton of HP, but a base defense of Ten, and a base Resistance of THREE, which makes him easy to damage. On the plus side his high Strength and Speed, as well as his extremely high chances of achieving a Critical Hit mean that most enemies will only get to try it once.
- Happily Married: To Calill
- Huge Guy, Tiny Girl: With Calill.
- Large Ham
- Small Name, Big Ego: Surprsingly averted. "World Class Berserker" Largo is actually a solid example of the Class' strengths (and weaknesses) and despite joining late and underleveled can make a decent substitute for uber-Badass Boyd.
- Sword and Sorcerer: Axe and Sorceress actually.
- Taken for Granite: Despite all of that strength of his, the fact that he could no longer fight meant that he was turned to stone like everyone else when Ashera made her judgement.
Tibarn[]
The Hawk King of Phoenicis, Tibarn bears an implacable hatred towards Begnion--and by extension all humans--following the Serenes Massacre. Impulsive and quick to anger, Tibarn slowly comes around on the subject of humanity, forming a strong friendship with Ike and Queen Elincia.
Class: Hawk King (PoR and RD) |
- Authority Equals Asskicking and Asskicking Equals Authority: Holy freaking crap, does it ever.
- Anti-Hero — Type II.
- Badass: He's one of the few people who can even injure Ashnard or Zelgius.
- Big Badass Bird of Prey: His Laguz form is a giant green-tinted bald eagle that can inflict some serious damage on anyone who gets in its way.
- Blood Knight
- Boisterous Bruiser
- Combat Pragmatist: Forces' Micaiah's surrender by threatening to drop Sothe off of a cliff.
- Eleventh-Hour Ranger: Can join your party during the finales of both games.
- Fantastic Racism: Is initially convinced that all humans cannot be trusted. Meeting Ike and Elincia helps to disabuse him of this notion.
- Intergenerational Friendship: With Ike and Elincia.
- Leitmotif:
- Brave General, Brave King is his conversation theme.
- In Radiant Dawn, when he fights non-boss enemies, King of the Sky plays.
- Mr. Fanservice
- Purposefully Overpowered: A flying tank.
- When he joins you in RD, he's only one point away from maxing out Skill. He comes equipped with Pavise, an ability that stops any enemy attack cold when it kicks in. It activates on Skill, and that stat doubles when he's transformed. Watch and laugh as he trolls everything but the final bosses with random invincibility 50% of the time.
- Royals Who Actually Do Something
- Sensitive Guy and Manly Man: The manly man to Reyson's sensitive guy.
- Scars Are Forever
- Shirtless Scene: Constantly has his jacket unbuttoned, showing off an impressively muscular chest.
- X Marks the Hero
Giffca[]
Class: Lion (PoR and RD) |
- Badass
- Badass Beard
- Eleventh-Hour Ranger
- Purposefully Overpowered
- Suspiciously Similar Substitute: Giffca was sent to Melior in Caineghis' stead to help wrap up the war. Ashnard finds this amusing:
Ashnard: You're the one they speak of in whispers... The lion king's shadow. What are you doing so far from your body, shadow? Am I so terrible that your king hides in fear? |
