Lily People[]

A tribe of humanoids that live in the wilds of a great plateau known as Mure. Living together as a herd they live in peace for the most part save for the carnivorous plants and the threat of Harvest. Harvest is the time when a member of the Lily People reaches their prime and must go to the Tower. They know nothing what happens to those that go only that they never return and have associated it with death. Later its revealed that the herd was specifically bred over the generations by the rulers of the Tower for food.

Elder Nep[]

The eldest of the Lily People and the only one who is exempted from harvest. A wise old man, he wishes to end harvest after seeing so many of his people go has an idea to bring Deliverance to his people. To do this they need a savior only told in his people's stories.

  • Fat and Skinny: At his introduction, Nep is standing alongside Avet while waiting for their willot contact to deliver Hur to them. They contrast each other, with Nep being skinny and potbelly while Avet is a mountain of muscle.
  • Wasteland Elder: Oldest surviving member of the herd who is allowed to live to old age.

Terasel[]

A female member of the herd that is sent to find Hur and bring him to Lily Pond. Meeting the man Jacob Rowlin who she believes to be Hur she grows close to him. Terasel is one of those that are to reach their prime and go to the Tower. Later she falls in love with Jacob and the two start a family.

  • Amazonian Beauty: Terasel is physically stronger than the protagonist, and yet the trope is inverted as Terasel has no aggressive bone in her body and is totally a pacifist.
  • Curiosity Causes Conversion: Ever curious about him she learns much about marriage and families, the Lily People having never developed concepts before. She later has Jacob commit to her and they become a couple.
  • Distinctive Appearances: Noted to be a beautiful woman but built similar to a bodybuilder.
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Out of all the Lily People she alone possess light brown hair while the rest are predominately black.

Avet[]

A male member of the herd Avet traveled Mure many times. Once he traveled to see the Tower despite it being forbidden. The Tower People the launched firefall that rained bits of charcoal on the man-eating plants agitating them to enter the Lily People's domain. Many children were taken. Due the consequence Avet left the herd and vanished for two seasons. He eventually returned to assist in helping Elder Nep achieve Deliverance to the Lily People by seeking Hur.

  • Gentle Giant: Despite his formidable size Avet is a kind soul like the rest of his kind.
  • Luke, I Might Be Your Father: While not said, its implied that he is the father of Shaleen's newborn son from one of the past revelries when Avet returned to the herd. Normally the identity of the father mattered little, but after the adoption of marriage, Avet married Shaleen and they became a Nuclear Family.
  • May-December Romance: Him and Shaleen, who is around sixteen while he is twenty-five.
  • Relationship Reveal: He and Shaleen are noted to be close throughout the novella, as Avet stayed near her after her pregnancy. After Jacob and Terasel announced their engagement, Avet admitted to Jacob he loved Shaleen, but was confused at his feeling as coupling was unheard of for the herd. With the encouragement of Nep and Jacob he finally admitted he loved Shaleen becoming her husband.
  • Hooked Up Afterwards: After seeing Terasel and Jacob's formal marriage, Avet eventually gives into his feelings for Shaleen and they marry.
  • Veteran Instructor: Avet is elevated to this after he and the other chosen for harvest survive. He having lived past his prime tells shares his stories of firefall at the campfire.

Shaleen[]

A young member of the herd, barely sixteen years of age who at the time of Jacob's arrival goes into labor. Jacob using his rudimentary knowledge of rearing calves manages to assist her in the birth. The event is seen as miraculous as usually a member of the herd dies.

  • Absurdly Youthful Mother: At 16 she is already pregnant and becomes a mother.
  • Everyone Can See It: She and Avet apparently are close to one another despite their ages. Their feelings for one another are encouraged by Jacob and Nep making the two a couple.
  • Happily Married: Once she and Avet make it official, Shaleen finds herself happy as she spent her time listening to her husband's retelling of Hur's power.
  • Likes Older Men: Shaleen being attracted to Avet who is nearly a decade older than her.

Gracine[]

  • Outliving One's Offspring: Gracine lost her child during a firefall, after Avet visited the area of the Tower. He was being taken care of by Terasel and was hit by ash causing him to scream and attract the killer vines to him.
  • Childhood Friends: She is a friend of Terasel, though younger than 25.

Dennon[]

One of the male members of the herd who reached the age of his prime, thus was slated to be harvested for meat. But thanks to Jacob ending harvest she is spared.

  • Got Volunteered: In order for Jacob to save the Lily People from the threat of Firefall, he needs volunteers to help him gather things in the forest to shield them from the raining charcoal. Nep goes to ask those who had been spared from Harvest to assist Jacob.

Shurry[]

One of the female members of the herd who reached the age of her prime, thus was slated to be harvested for meat. But thanks to Jacob ending harvest she is spared.

Jenseen[]

One of the female members of the herd who reached the age of her prime, thus was slated to be harvested for meat. But thanks to Jacob ending harvest she is spared.

Tower People[]

A race of humanoids that inhabit the Tower and the defacto rulers of Mure. They are actually descended from a group of bandits from the below the plateau that invaded Mure and took the Tower for themselves. They attempted to eat the willots as food but found their meat to be disgusting. To satisfy their craving for red meat, they selected members of their own people to be converted into cattle.

Great One[]

The leader of the Tower People, a big fat buddha of a man with a simple mind whose only entertainment is the feasts and praise from his subjects.

  • I'm a Humanitarian: He and his people are cannibals as they subsist on the Lily People who were originally descended from members of the Tower People.

Others[]

Montigue[]

  • Police Are Useless: Montigue apparently belongs to the unit that patrol the skies around Mure, to keep out trespassers into what is deemed a preserve for the last habitat of the willots. However looks like centuries ago the security was useless as it failed to block a band of rogues that invaded the plateau who would then become the Tower People. The law enforcers correct this once Montigue and Jacob report the illegal squatting of the Tower People, finally bringing the issue to their attention.
