Friday Night Funkin logo

Friday Night Funkin' is a Rhythm Game created by Newgrounds user ninjamuffin99, with help from his friends Kawaisprite, PhantomArcade, and Evilsk8r. Ninjamuffin99 originally created the game for the 47th Ludum Dare Game Jam on October 5, 2020, before he later uploaded it on Newgrounds on November 1, almost a month later.

In the game, the player plays as the boyfriend (named Boyfriend), as he has rap battles with other characters while trying to win over the heart of his girlfriend (named Girlfriend). Some of these characters include Girlfriend's parents, or other Newgrounds characters, including Pico and the Tankmen.

Every level, or "week," as the game calls them, has a different set of songs of varying genres. And they're all super catchy to boot.

And despite the game's cartoony art style, it's absolutely not for kids, as it contains plenty of sexual innuendos and swearing.

A Kickstarter project for the full version of the game, titled Friday Night Funkin': The Full Ass Game, was later launched on April 18, 2021. This version includes lots of new features, such as brand new weeks, fully animated cutscenes, and 2-player mode. The project was fully-funded in just three hours on its first day, and reached over $2.2 million by the time the Kickstarter ended on May 18.

Tropes used in Friday Night Funkin' include:
  • Alliterative Name: Girlfriend's father and mother are respectively named Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest.
  • Amicable Exes: Not exactly that amicable, but Pico refuses to kill Boyfriend, whom he use to date. Though Pico does save Boyfriend and Girlfriend in the final level for Week 7.
  • Anachronic Order: Per Word of God, Week 2, where you face off Skid and Pump, chronologically takes place after you face off Mommy Mearest in Week 4.
  • Art Shift: Since Week 6 has Boyfriend and Girlfriend trapped in a video game, all the characters and backgrounds are done in a 16-bit pixel style.
  • Big Damn Heroes: Pico comes to Boyfriend and Girlfriend's rescue near the end of Week 7, and he spends the last song of that week shooting the other tankmen in the face.
  • Country Matters: Tankman drops two C-bombs during Week 7.
  • Dating What Daddy Hates: Girlfriend's parents are not very fond of Boyfriend, so they both challenge him to rap battles to prove his worth.
  • Game Within a Game: Week 6 features a PS1 game called Hating Simulator, which Daddy Dearest traps Boyfriend and Girlfriend in.
  • His Name Really Is "Barkeep": Boyfriend's name really is "Boyfriend." Likewise, Girlfriend's name really is "Girlfriend."
  • Older Than They Look: Downplayed; Boyfriend is 19, but the game's chibi style makes him look like a young teenager.
  • Retraux: Despite being an HTML5 game, its art style gives it the look and feel of an early-2000s Adobe Flash game. That this game was released around the same time Flash was about to be discontinued makes this even more noteworthy.
  • Speaking Simlish: Subverted; Boyfriend can speak normally, but he chooses to speak with beeps and boops because he doesn't like having conversations with people.
  • Surprise Creepy: The game has two instances.
    • Week 5 starts off fairly normal (well, aside from Daddy Dearest and Mommy Mearest holding the Mall Santa hostage), but then the Monster appears during the final act, singing a song about how he wants to eat Boyfriend and kill Girlfriend.
    • The battle with Senpai in Week 6 starts off normally, though Senpai does get mad the first time he loses to you. The second time he loses, however, Senpai turns out to have been possessed by the spirit of someone else Daddy Dearest trapped in the game a long time ago.
  • Trapped in TV Land: The premise of Week 6. Daddy Dearest sends Boyfriend and Girlfriend into the game Hating Simulator, where Boyfriend has to challenge Senpai to prevent the latter from stealing Girlfriend from the former.
  • Vocal Dissonance: Although he has a very menacing appearence, Daddy Dearest's voice is somewhat high-pitched. Boyfriend even compares it to that of an angel's voice in the Boyfriend Remix of "Fresh."
  • You Gotta Have Blue Hair: Boyfriend, and it's actually his natural hair color.
