Deus Ex Machina[]
Voiced by: Norio Wakamoto (Japanese) and Kent Williams (English) |
The Lord of Time and Space who has called forth the Diary Holders to participate in a battle royale. He is dying soon, so he wishes to pass on his power to the winner of the contest.
- A God Am I: Well, he really is a God, but he actively goads the other diary holders into this behavior to encourage them in the game.
- Akashic Records: He has it.
- Divine Intervention: He does this to prevent Minene's death.
- Even Evil Has Standards: He's a Jerkass God who created the Survival Game for fun, but he's also a man of honour who takes steps to make the game as fair as possible, and is not without his moments of compassion.
- God Is Dying: Part of the reason why he created the survival game.
- God Is Evil: Sure, he's about to die and taking the world down with him, but picking his successor by forcing psychopaths to fight a battle royale for the lulz?
- God Is Flawed: He leans a bit closer to this in that he wants the survival game to play out fairly between the players and without outside intervention from himself or MurMur, and honestly can't see the problem in it so long as he's kept entertained and his successor is chosen. He is also very willing to cancel the whole game entirely when John Balks decides to stop the Future Diary Project from developing further in the third world.
- Half Truth: When Yukiteru asks him to revive Rea, Deus replies than it's impossible. When questioned why that is so, he states that he's dying and losing his power. While he doesn't outright lie, the way he phrases his reply makes it look like it's only impossible for him in particular and that the new god will be able to revive Rea; he doesn't mention that even a god would only be able to revive the body but not the soul. As his later conversation with Akise shows, it's not that Deus himself isn't aware of this.
- Imaginary Friend: Yuki at first believes Deus to be one. Turns out he isn't.
- It Amused Me: Another part of his reason for creating the game.
- Jerkass God
- Kick the Dog: When he tells the truth to Akise about being an Artificial Human, Akise declares that his love for Yukiteru is genuine. Deus, who is nearly finished in returning Akise to the Akashic Records, tells Akise that those feelings were also programmed into him. Given that Akise is very serious about his love for Yukiteru, it's a low blow, even if it ended up being true.
- He also seriously considers following Eleventh's suggestion to remove Yukiteru and Yuno from the game when they fail to show any activity for five consecutive days. Given that Deus was pressed for time in choosing his successor before he dies, this ends up being more of a Kick the Dog moment for Eleventh than Deus.
- Pals with Jesus: Pretty much everyone who is able to visit the Hall of Causality is this to him since he's a pretty chill God. Special mention goes to Yukiteru though, whom Deus clearly favors over everyone else.
- Your Days Are Numbered
MurMur[]
Voiced by: Manami Honda (Japanese) and Leah Clark (English) |
Deus Ex Machina's servant, who takes the form of a dark-skinned little girl. She is not as loyal to him as anyone was led to believe.
- A God Am I: She takes over after Deus dies.
- Ambiguously Brown
- Big Bad: Manipulates Yuno's desire to be with Yuki and attempts to have the Survival Game endlessly replay for her own entertainment.
- Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: More evident in Paradox. Her Jerkass personality seems to be directed at Akise only to the point that it makes it seem like she's homophobic. Heck, she goes as far as calling him a fag in Paradox. In the main series, she shows her true personality after Deus dies.
- Bunny Ears Lawyer: She's a silly character for the most part (despite the occasional slip up, like the incident that sets up the storyline for Paradox), but she knows how to do her job. And she is a lot more competent and devious than she first appears.
- Butt Monkey: In Paradox. Might lean into being The Chew Toy depending on the fans that read the story.
- Cloudcuckoolander
- Deceptive Disciple / Bastard Understudy: Subverted in the end. It turns out she was loyal to Yuno, most likely because she became god in the first world.
- Enigmatic Minion: Towards the middle of the story, MurMur starts hinting that she knows more than she lets on, perhaps more than Deus, and manipulates the game accordingly. Her true purpose isn't revealed until the full story about Yuno being MurMur's real god comes to light.
- Jerkass: Mainly toward Akise. Otherwise, she mostly enjoys screwing around with everyone else.
- Just Between You and Me: Shows Yukiteru the past events of the first world right after Yuno starts to attack him to "make the game more interesting". Since she was working under Yuno, she was probably expecting him to die right after showing him the past world. And she would've been right had it not been for Minene's interference.
- Meaningful Name: Named for the Goetic demon Murmur. She also carries a small trumpet on her hip to reinforce the namesake.
- She eventually wears a crown just like the Murmur from myth is said to wear after Deus death.
- Obfuscating Stupidity
- One-Winged Angel: The form she takes after destroying her bracelets.
- Perky Female Minion
- Plucky Comic Relief
- Restraining Bolt: The bracelets she wears keep her from acting against Deus's will, or so he thought. In chapter 57, she takes them off.
- She continues to serve God's will. It's just that her God is no longer Deus.
- Spell My Name with an "S": Although both fan translations of the Manga and the official Tokyopop release spelled her name "MuruMuru", the opening to the anime displays her name as "MurMur".
- Verbal Tic: Ends every sentence with "-noja", the equivalent of the standard Japanese explanatory expression "-noda" in some Western Japanese dialects[1]
Aru Akise[]
[]
Voiced by: Akira Ishida (Japanese) and Todd Haberkorn (English) |
Yuki's classmate who develops a peculiar interest in him. He desires to be a great detective, and dives head-first into the mysteries surrounding the Diary Holders. He has the "Detective Diary" which predicts other diary owners' actions regardless of how they change the future. In Paradox, however, he borrows Yukiteru's "Indifference Diary".
- Always Save the Girl: In Mirai Nikki: Paradox, in regards to Yuki and Tsubaki (though it might be just part of his plan in the latter's case).
- Amateur Sleuth, aspiring to become Great Detective.
- Artificial Human
- Badass Normal: He doesn't have a Future Diary, but he can still go toe-to-toe with Diary Holders. He gets one later, and it's the most powerful one yet.
- Badass Abnormal: After he's revealed to be an Artificial Human created by Deus to observe the game, he receives a future diary through the 8th's server system and uses it to become a terrifying opponent for even Yuno.
- Didn't See That Coming: Yuno having two Diaries. Of course no one besides MurMur or Yuno would have seen it coming.
- Barehanded Blade Block: In the manga during Yukiteru's and Yuno's last fight with 11th he saves 8th from Yuno by grabbing the blade of Yuno's sword when she's attacking her.
- Beware the Nice Ones: Akise is one of the nicer characters in the series. He rarely gets pissed off even when Yuno tries to kill him multiple times. The only time he lost it was when he spared Yuno and she responds by calling Yuki and lying to him and manipulates him to kill his friends.
- Bishie Sparkle: In Paradox, especially in chapter 3.
- Bishounen
- Bi the Way: If Paradox is anything to go off of. [2]
- Bodyguard Crush: On Yuki.
- Break the Cutie: His confrontation with Deus. It's a real shocker to find out that you're not even human and then denied the things that made you you. The pride in his detective skills as well as his love for Yuki were denied by God himself. Fortunately, he breaks out of this quickly.
- Bury Your Gays
- Clingy Jealous Boy: Only toward Yuno but even that is subtle until the final confrontation.
- The Comically Serious
- Crazy Prepared: Near the beginning of his final fight with Yuno.
- Determinator
- Dying Declaration of Love: Subverted. Akise doesn't get a chance to tell how he feels for Yuki. He instead, texts the final message to Yuki about Yuno before she beheads him.
- Dying Moment of Awesome
- Expy: His similarities to Kaworu Nagisa go way past the point of being unintentional. Like Kaworu, he's a White-Haired Pretty Boy voiced by Akira Ishida who seems to be in love with the meek main character, and turns out to be an "angel" and later dies of decapitation.
- Hero Antagonist: In contrast to Yuno's Villain Protagonist.
- Heroic Albino: Has shown shades of this in the actual series. Played straight in Paradox.
- Heroic BSOD/Heroic RROD: When he confronts Deus on his own and finds out that he's an Artificial Human, he tries to prove that everything he had done up to that point wasn't programmed into him, but with each of Deus' rejections, his body decayed more and more as it was returned into Deus' Akashic Records. When he finally tried declare that his love for Yukiteru was real, Deus rejected that as well, and said it was also something that he willed to happen as God.
- Heroic Resolve: Even though he was deleted and Deus proved that everything he did was planned out as God's will, he decides to forge his own future from that point on, creates his own future diary with 8th's server system, and swears to protect Yukiteru.
- Hidden Heart of Gold
- Hoist by His Own Petard: See Shipper on Deck below.
- I Did What I Had to Do: During his last meeting with Yukiteru he claims that not stopping him from killing Mao and Kousaka was necessary, because it meant that the future predicted by his diary wouldn't change and that he would manage to kill Yuno. It's never made clear whether the readers are supposed to agree with Akise that letting Mao and Kousaka die was really necessary.
- If I Can't Have You: An interpretation of his character concerning Yuki. He generally tries to keep Yuki away from Yuno (with good reasons mind you) but his final confession before he's killed can be seen as this so Yuno can't have him. It seems to work...but then it doesn't since by then, Yuki is already too far in with his relationship with Yuno.
- If It's You It's Okay: Akise claims that he's not into boys. However, he says that he just loves Yuki.
- I Gave My Word: Akise is one of the few characters that constantly tells the truth to Yuki and never breaks his promise to him. But it was almost certainly averted with his promise to Kamado that he would't hand her over to Yukiteru in exchange for giving him an apprentice future diary. When Yukiteru found him after killing Mao and Kousaka, Akise was guarding unconscious Kamado. As she was awake and running away from Yukiteru while his friends were stopping him just in the previous chapter, Akise must have been the one who caught her and knocked her out, as nobody else could have done that. And he almost certainly did that with an intention of letting Yukiteru kill her or even kiling her himself, as he already stated that he wanted Yukiteru to be god.
- Incredibly Obvious Tail: When tailing Tenth, and indeed he gets spotted.
- Last Kiss: More like a stolen kiss but it was probably his first with Yuki and his last as Yuno kills him shortly afterwards.
- The Messiah: In Paradox. He does all in his power to prevent the many casualties that Yuno originally caused in the main series. This includes not involving anyone during 9th's hostage situation and battling her on his own (albeit using MurMur as a fake hostage as well), figuring out what the cult was planning to do to 6th and save her, prevent 5th from becoming murderous by saving his parents and making the 12th realize that his view of the world is wrong and he can still redeem himself by saving another. He even gets to befriend 7th and 8th in said situation. Naturally, the only person who does not like this attitude one bit is MurMur.
- Also in the main series but by proxy. His dying message gives Yukiteru awareness of the Alternate timeline.prompting Yukiteru to improve the lives of all the participants upon arrival in the third world.
- Murder Is the Best Solution: Subverted. Unlike Yuno, Akise does all in his power to avoid killing someone. This backfires on him in the end.
- Nice Guy: For the most part. He didn't kill Yuno when he had the chance because of his better judgment. However, he soon regrets it, and she kills him.
- No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: Despite Akise sparing Yuno's life when he had the upper hand, she manages to trick his diary by forcing his blade into her abdomen, fulfilling his diary's prophecy and forcing him to waste his time in bandaging her wound so that she won't die, knowing that Yukiteru would lose his trust in Akise if he had allowed Yuno to bleed out. Once he runs to help the others, Yuno calls Yukiteru to lie to him about Akise and his friends, causing Hinata, Mao, and Kousaka to die as a result. Akise even relents that he should have killed her instead of letting her live.
- Off with His Head
- Out-Gambitted
- The Quiet One
- Red Eyes, Take Warning: He's a subversion of the trope as despite being a very subtle Yandere, he's mostly a nice person overall. Double Subverted in his final confrontation with Yuno; he went for the kill and was only thwarted when Yuno was revealed to be holding out the second Yuno's future diary for him to smash.
- Single-Target Sexuality: Guess who.
- Purposely made to be this way so that he would watch over Yukiteru for Deus.
- Ship Tease: A lot of this with Yukiteru in the main story and Paradox. Also has a fair amount with Tsubaki in Paradox, too.
- Shipper on Deck: Subverted. At first he seems to be pushing Yuki to go out with Yuno going as far as to set them up for a date that could very well make them closer than before. However, this is so he can trespass in Yuno's home hoping to dig up information that will make Yuki realize how much of a bad person she is. However, this solution comes back to bite him in the ass when by the time he's figured out that the third body in Yuno's house is in fact another Yuno, Yukiteru has grown to love Yuno so much that he doesn't give a damn if she is someone else.
- Spanner in the Works: The reason 10th got caught in the first place is that he assumed that Akise was a diary wielder and was out to kill him. These turn of events later lead to his death.
- He almost ruins MurMur's plans in Paradox by preventing the tragedies that happen to nearly all the characters.
- In the main series. His dying message to Yukiteru serves as a catalyst which triggers the events leading to the final act.
- He almost ruins MurMur's plans in Paradox by preventing the tragedies that happen to nearly all the characters.
- Strange Boy: According to Hinata and Mao, he's considered very strange especially since they claim he "plays detective" rather than being an actual detective.
- Unscrupulous Hero: See Yandere below.
- White-Haired Pretty Boy
- Yandere: Much more subtle than Yuno, but it seems to be there. While usually nice for everyone, he did prove on a few occassions that he's willing to sacrifice others for Yukiteru's sake. Once, without knowing whether it'll kill him or not, he instructed Yukiteru to break Kousaka's apprentice diary, to see what might happen to him and to prevent 8th from getting information from Kousaka's diary. Yukiteru did as he was told without any objections. Thankfully, since Kousaka wasn't bound by the game like the other diary holders, he lived.
- Made even more obvious after Hinata's death, when Akise's diary predicted that Yukiteru would also kill Mao and Kousaka. Despite arriving at the scene in time to prevent this, Akise decided to abandon them to their fates instead. When questioned about this decision by Yukiteru, he replied that his diary also predicted that he's going to kill Yuno in a few minutes, so he didn't want to do anything that might have changed that future.
- His vague Yandere tendencies become less vague in Paradox, in that he is much more open about his desire to make sure that Yukiteru becomes a god.
Hinata Hino[]
Voiced by: Yuki Matsuoka (Japanese) and Caitlin Glass (English) |
Another of Yuki's classmates, who quickly becomes friends with him. She's actually the daughter of the 10th Diary Holder, and is commanding the dogs in place of her father, because she's desperate for her father's approval. She borrows the "Breeder's Diary" at first, but her real Future Diary is the "Friend Diary", which predicts her interactions with her friends.
- Adaptation Dye Job: Hinata's hair in the anime is closer to being brunette rather than orange like in the manga.
- Bare Your Midriff
- Big Breasts, Big Deal: Mostly Type 3 with some Type 1; Hinata's size isn't really brought up too much, but she does get flustered whenever Mao is admiring her assets.
- Dark Magical Girl: She may not have the powers (unless you count the Diary), but she does have the personality and backstory.
- Faking the Dead: As part of her ploy to kill Akise to gain her father's trust.
- Fiery Redhead: It's more of an orange tint than anything though.
- Curtains Match the Window: In the anime, where her hair is brown.
- Heel Face Turn
- Kansai Regional Accent
- Parental Neglect
- Pointless Band-Aid
- Theme Naming: Just as her father, Tsukishima, contains the kanji for the moon in his name, both her first and last name contain the kanji for the sun.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The tomboy to Mao's girly girl.
- Well Done Daughter Girl: She wants her father to acknowledge her.
Mao Nonosaka[]
Voiced by: Yukana (Japanese) and Ashleigh Domangue (English) |
Yuki's classmate and best friend of Hinata. Her "Lovely Hinata Diary" predicts what happens to Hinata, as well as her "path to womanhood".
- Big Ol' Eyebrows: They're not that big, but still noticeable.
- Bury Your Gays
- Heel Face Turn: It tends to be forgotten, but in the story arc when she was first introduced she held Yukiteru hostage at knife point and tried to kill him via Diary.
- Lipstick Lesbian: Towards Hinata.
- Nice Hat
- Psycho Lesbian: Helps Hinata in her scheme to kill Akise, despite the fact that Hinata was only doing it to gain her father's approval. After Hinata apologizes for taking advantage of Mao's feelings, she actually tries to kill Yukiteru. Hinata herself doesn't really snap until Yuno stabs Mao.
- Tomboy and Girly Girl: The girly girl to Hinata's tomboy.
- You Gotta Have Purple Hair
Ouji Kosaka[]
Voiced by: Minoru Shiraishi (Japanese) and Joel McDonald (English) |
Yuki's classmate, who doesn't like him much (the feeling's mutual). He enjoys blogging on his cell phone, which inadvertently connects him to the 8th's Diary. He gets the "Kousaka King Diary" while attempting to rescue Yuki from Yuno. It predicts his "brilliant moments". Later in the series, it is upgraded to the "Neo Kousaka King Diary", which predicts the brilliant moments of the people around him as well.
- A Plague on Both Your Houses
- Blessed with Suck: As Yuno points out after tricking him his diary is fairly weak in its information gathering abilities.
- Butt Monkey
- Jerk with a Heart of Gold: But he slides more on the jerk side and rarely shows his heart of gold side.
- My Friends and Zoidberg: Justified, in that he's kind of a jerk.
Yukiteru: I don't care much for Kosaka, but...I'm gonna be friends with everyone! |
- Spell My Name with an "S": The official translation of his name is "Kosaka," but many fan translations render it "Kousaka."
- "The Reason You Suck" Speech: To Yuki.
Masumi Nishijima[]
Voiced by Makoto Ishii |
A police officer who works under Kurusu. Despite not having a Diary, he becomes deeply involved in the conflict between the Diary Holders, and specially after meeting and falling for Minene.
- Badass Normal: Notable in that his lack of a Diary is key to his effectiveness.
- Bishounen
- Career Versus Woman: Has to choose between doing his job as a policeman and later being the 11th's bodyguard and his feelings for Minene. He chooses Minene, and even proposes to her.
- The Charmer: Though he (unknowingly, at first) ends up mostly just pursuing Minene every time.
- Curtains Match the Window
- Dating Catwoman
- Dogged Nice Guy: To Minene while she was disguised as Natsuko.
- Fair Cop
- Go Out with a Smile: In the manga, the last thing he did before he died was give one final smile to Minene.
- Good Cop, Bad Cop: With him as the good cop and Kurusu as the bad cop.
- Heroic Sacrifice: And Yuki gets blamed for it, although he did actually use Minene and Nishijima as decoys to clear the path ahead to go to John Balks.
- Hot Dad
- Nice Guy
- Officer and a Gentleman
- Reasonable Authority Figure
- The Slacker: Shown to be like this during his time as a rookie in the third world. He seems to be a more serious and competitent cop during the time of the actual story.
- Taking the Bullet: Heartbreakingly, to protect Minene.
- Villainesses Want Heroes: Inverted, as Nishijima is the one who actively pursues Minene.
Rea Amano[]
Yuki's mother who's usually away from home due to work. Despite this, she and Yukiteru are shown to have a stable and loving relationship. She approves of Yuno and Yuki as a couple, against Yuki's ignored protests. She is killed when her husband stabs her in desperation after he escapes the collapsing Sakurami Tower.
- Amazingly Embarrassing Parents
- Dead Little Sister: Becomes this to Yukiteru after her husband stabs her in a moment of extreme stress and desperation. If there was any doubt of how much Yuki depended on her/how much he loved her, it's certainly cleared away not too long after when we see just how broken he becomes without her.
- Hot Shonen Mom
- Meaningful Name: If Yukiteru is Jupiter (see his section above), then Rea is his Titaness mother Rhea.
- Parental Obliviousness: Especially towards Yuno's...behavior. Really, when your son is on the run from the law, then disappears for a week after being exonerated and comes back incredibly nervous, you should be at least a little concerned.
Kurou Amano[]
Yuki's father who left after a divorce years ago. He and Yukiteru are shown spending some father-son bonding after a long time since the divorce around 2/3 into the manga, where he is introduced. He really seems to care for Yukiteru and Rea or so we are led to believe (until that is subverted too). He is killed by the 11th's henchmen.
- Dead Little Sister: His death at the hands of the 11th's henchmen promp Yuki to momentarily go berserk, Take A Level In Badass, depend fully on Yuno, and resolve to become God.
- Disappeared Dad
- It's All About Me: His most prominent flaw is that he puts himself and his own troubles before everyone else.
- Double Subversion: He still cares for Yuki and Rea... until we're shown that this is a facade to find and break Yuki's Diary so that the 11th will clear the 3 million yen debt he owes. However, he doesn't seem to know that doing so will kill Yuki. Later, he stabs his ex-wife when she stops him from escaping. He stabs her (which kills her) in order to run and appears to be about to eliminate the evidence and escape...until we learn that he had retrieved a telescope he had been previously forced to pawn so that he could gaze at the stars and calm himself before turning himself in. He also asks Yuki to start over with him when his sentence is over, to which he agrees. Too bad the 11th's henchmen chose to butt in at this time.
- Jerkass
- Meaningful Name: Fitting with the rest of his family's Theme Naming, "Kurou" resembles "Cronus". Not to mention how he tries to kill his son...
- Pet the Dog: Despite trying to sell Yuki out to the enemy, and murdering his mother, it turns out those were just horrible mistakes that he never meant to happen and all he wanted was for the family to be happy... and then he dies.
- Redemption Equals Death: Yuki was willing to give him another chance after he turned himself and fulfilled his sentence, but the 11th's men killed him before he could do any of that. Ergo, Yuki forgave him completely and then freaks out on the murderers.
- ↑ namely, the ones spoken in Okayama, Hiroshima and Yamaguchi prefectures, according to the Japanese Other Wiki.
- ↑ In which he insists very clearly he is not gay, and seems to have a weird fondness for Tsubaki Kasugano, despite the undeniable Ho Yay with Yukiteru.
