Going Native (fanfic)

Going Native by Rap541, is a fanfic crossing the reimagined Battlestar Galactica and Star Trek: The Next Generation, in which Felix Gaeta turns out to be a Starfleet officer stranded in the Twelve Colonies by an experiment gone wrong ten years ago, forced to blend in in order to uphold the Prime Directive, and has been quietly directing the Rag-Tag Fleet towards the Federation. When the RTF stumbles onto the Enterprise-D, his secret is revealed, and things get interesting... especially when it's revealed that Felix's grandfather was the god Apollo (as depicted in "Who Mourns for Adonais?" from Star Trek: The Original Series). Features Culture Clash, politics, action, romance, and Felix dealing with the consequences of going native.

Has a sequel, Going Forward, which became a Dead Fic in September of 2013. Set several years after the initial fic, it features the Galactica characters finding their new lives in the Federation disrupted by the outbreak of the Dominion War.

Note: Like many fans, Rap541 disliked the revelations of the third season finale of Galactica, and declared that they would be ignored, instead producing an alternate solution to the mystery of the Final Five. Though some of the more recent chapters of the sequel, before the fic died, suggested that a version of those ideas may have been used after all.

Tropes used in Going Native (fanfic) include:

• Actor Allusion: The call-sign Kara bestows on Barclay, "Mad Dog", is an oblique reference to the fact that Barclay's actor had previously played "Howling Mad" Murdock on the The A-Team.
• Alien Non-Interference Clause: The Prime Directive of course. Gaeta following it led to some massive anger on the part of the Colonials.
• And Then What?: Gaeta tells Picard in their one-to-one that he thinks the Cylons have no idea what to do afterwards if they managed to destroy humanity.
• Armor-Piercing Question:
  • Many Coloninals question why Gaeta didn't tell them the truth of his origins. As he fires back with each and every time, who would have believed him?
  • As the Enterprise crew point out, if the Cylons won the war; why would the Centurions then create the Human Cylons to serve under?
• Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence: The Greek Gods as detailed in "Who Mourns for Adonais?". In particular, when Lee reads how Apollo died, he finds the language disturbingly similar to how the Sacred Texts describe Athena's demise.
• Babies Ever After: In the sequel, it's explicitly noted that many of the Galactica characters now have offspring.
• Beware the Nice Ones: Felix, normally so polite, easily defeats Starbuck when the latter tries to kill him.
• Beware the Silly Ones: Lwaxana Troi is very silly. But she's also a Betazoid ambassador. Not the kind of person to be dismissed.
• Came Back Wrong: The Cylons on the Basestars destroyed by the Enterprise‍'‍s photon torpedoes aren't downloading right.
• Curb Stomp Battle:
  • The Enterprise VS three Basestars, Data VS a Centurion.
  • Lwaxana Troi's meetings with Baltar could be considered a Curb Stomp Battle of Wits.

• Deleted Scene: A few chapters depicting the initial meeting between the Enterprise and the Galactica are appended to the first fic.
• Doing In the Wizard: After learning that the Greek Gods physically existed and could produce Half-Human Hybrids, the Federation began to suspect that Greek demigods like Heracles and Theseus might have been Half-Human Hybrids produced by the Pollux lifeforms.
• Dramatic Irony: "Could you prove you're from Earth and not... And not Apollo's child sent to save us?"
  • "Sharon and I had a bet that you were really a Cylon... I defended you... I said hey, he's probably just from Earth, that explains the weirdness..."
• Fantastic Racism: The Federation's lingering anti-Augment sentiment is a minor plot point.
  • Rosalin mentions that some Federation officers have pro-human views and/or look down on planets in the fringes of Federation territory.
• Freudian Excuse Is No Excuse: Kara "Starbuck" Thrace. She had a Dark and Troubled Past? Suck it up, the Twelve Colonies have been through a holocaust. She feels offended that the Lords of Kobol were just Sufficiently Advanced Aliens? Too bad. Everyone else is shocked by this but everyone else, even the religious zealots, has managed to cope by adapting their beliefs to the new status quo and didn't even think about murdering Gaeta for being Apollo's grandchild.
• Going Native: Obviously.
• Half-Human Hybrids: Felix and his sisters (well, technically, they're three-quarters human hybrids), as descendants of a Physical God. Studies on Earth found evidence of other people who are also descended from Apollo's kin with the same indicators being present in the fleet. Such as in Kara Thrace.
• In Medias Res: The story begins with Felix aboard the Enterprise, having a therapy session with Troi.
• Mama Bear: Sophia roughs Kara up for mistreating Felix and warns her against doing so again.
• Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Like in the TOS episode, it's not clear if Apollo and his ilk were genuinely gods or just advanced beings.
• Meaningful Echo: "Sometimes you have to roll a hard six, sir."
• Mysterious Past: As is noted, no one has any idea where the Greek Gods came from.
• OOC Is Serious Business: When Reg Barclay corrects someone, Starbuck notes that this is OOC and the person getting corrected is saying something sensitive.
  • Later on it is noted that Starbuck doesn't like admitting mistakes after she does just that.
• Obfuscating Stupidity: Lwaxana plays this card even more than usual when she speaks with Baltar.
• Odd Friendship: To the surprise of everyone, Starbuck and Reg Barclay get along splendidly. While less remarked on, Doc Cottle gets along great with the Vulcan Dr. T'Kil.
• Prophecy Twist: According to the Scrolls of Apollo, the son of Apollo may be either a savior or a destroyer; most Colonials consider Felix the former, but Starbuck spends most of the story convinced that he's the latter.
• Really Thirty-Two Years Old: "Good genes" from Apollo mean that Felix looks half a decade younger than his actual age. Meanwhile, his 63-year old sister Sofia appears to be in her thirties, and his 100+ mother looks to be 45.
• "The Reason You Suck" Speech: Not as overt as most examples of this trope but the fic is not kind to Starbuck's It's All About Me attitudes in the midst of such a crisis and many characters let her know that.
• Rock Beats Laser: Romulan centurions vs Colonial Marines does not end well for the Space Romans.
• Running Gag: Felix being thought to be a Cylon.
• Shadow Archetype:
  • Riker thinks that the Federation could have been no different than the Colonials if the Borg had won at Wolf 359.
  • Data ponders the similarities between him, Lore, and the Cylon Centurions.
• Shout-Out: The Starfleet crewman who lets slip Felix's heritage while drunk is named Tex Jarman.
  • Racetrack is given The Hobbit to read.
• Single-Issue Psychology: Averted. Felix has a vast array of neuroses from a vast array of sources.
• Technopath: Felix, as a consequence of his alien descent.
• Tomato in the Mirror: The bioCylons are cloned human whose systems are infected with nanites, and the Centurions have always been running the show.
