- In episode 46, a boy named Yoichi challenges Tetsuya to a boxing match. If he wins, he wants to be allowed to pilot Great Mazinger. Even though he's severily outmatched, he insistis to be fought with full strenght.. The kid obviously loses. He breaks down crying and runs away. Later, Great Mazinger goes on to fight the Battle Beast Sorgos which is impervious to all of his weapons. After barely surviving the encounter Tetsuya is left overwhelmed by the fear of death. Before the next attack, Yoichi comes to apologize for his behavior and say goodbye. Turns out he's dying from radiation poisoning.. Tetsuya is left flabbergasted by how strong willed Yoichi is and recovers his will to fight. However, as soon as Sorgos' second attack begins Yoichi falls down and begins to die. He promises that he will keep fightning to stay alive as long as he can and asks to Tetsuya to promise he will win so the two can see each other one last time.. After a very difficult fight, Great Mazinger wins and Tetsuya returns only to find out Yoichi already died. He drops on his knees and breaks down crying. Jun tells him that the boy's last wish was for Tetsuya to keep on living for his sake.
- In one of the final episodes, Sayaka wants go to fight, but Professor Yumi tries talking her out of it, reasoning Diana A is too weak to fight, and he does not want jeopardizing his daughter's life. Professor Yumi had been a somewhat distant father throughout Mazinger Z and Great Mazinger, but every so often he showed he truly cared for his daughter. This was one of those times.
- Professor Kabuto begs Kouji as he is dying treating Tetsuya like his brother. Kouji, instead of asking him why he is leaving him AGAIN, vows doing so.
- After Professor Kabuto's death, Tetsuya is berating himself, thinking it's all my fault (he is right), and he vows he will never again feel petty jealousy as Jun watches over him.
