Snow White and Rose Red ["Yuki shiro to bara beni" (Japanese: ゆき白とばら紅) ] is the 9th episode of the 1988-1989 series Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics. The titular characters, two Naive Everygirl sisters from the countryside, must deal with a friendly talking bear, a Fiery Redhead Prince, and a cruel dwarf throughout a whole year.
The Tropes used in this episode include the following list.
- Adaptation Expansion: It has the Younger Prince actually show up and gives him Ship Tease with Rose Red.
- Ascended Extra: The Prince's brother went from just being mentioned at the very end, to show up early in the story. Not only he's given a rather Hot-Blooded personality and a protective streak regarding his missing big brother, but it's shown how he and Rose Red fell for one another.
- Beary Funny: The Bear is not a super snarker or jokester, but there's a funny scene where he and Snow-White play around with an apple and end up having an Accidental Kiss.
- Big Brother Instinct: Inverted, the Younger Prince is the protective one and he's Hell-bent on making the Dwarf pay for what he did to his bro.
- Fiery Redhead: Not only Rose-Red, but also her prospective boyfriend. No wonder they're made for each other.
- Getting Crap Past the Radar: The implication that a teenage girl started developing feelings for a guy in the days when she believed him to be a talking bear is... interesting.
- Girlish Pigtails: Snow White braids her long brown hair.
- Hair Decorations: Rose Red uses either a pink short stole or a cream-colored headband.
- Kneel Before Frodo: After the Dwarf's death and the Prince's release from the spell, the girls kneel when they find out that the Bear is the Prince of the realm, but then he kneels before them to thank them for their help and shelter.
- No Good Deed Goes Unpunished: The Prince was transformed into a bear when he caught the Dwarf stealing his castle's treasures and tried to stop him.
- Rescue Romance: Rose Red tends to the Younger Prince when he's hurt after falling off his horse, and once they part she's already crushing on him. He reciprocates, later helps his big brother (still a bear) fight off the Dwarf to protect the girls, and they end up married.
- She Cleans Up Nicely: At the end the girls look really nice in their wedding dresses, and their beloved mother is also quite pretty in a simple but cute blue gown.
- Ship Tease: Both sisters have this with their respective Princes. Snow-White's case implies that she liked the Bear Prince before she learned that he was a human.
- Sibling Yin-Yang: Not only between the sisters, but between the two Princes. The Bear Prince is calm, polite and slow to anger (but when he IS...!), while his little brother is a Fiery Redhead.
- Smitten Teenage Girl: Rose Red crushes furiously on the Younger Prince after their first meeting. Can anyone blame her, tho?
- Strong Family Resemblance: Both girls resemble their mother in one or another way.
- Tall, Dark and Handsome: The Bear Prince's human form is that of a very nice-looking black-haired man.
- Tomboy with a Girly Streak: Rose-Red is a spirited and outspoken tomboy who also has her long hair down, wears a pink dress, knows her way around textile work and Thinks Like a Romance Novel.
