A footy one this, usually wheeled out when a British team is playing in a foreign country, which is pretty frequent.
Newspapers (usually of the tabloid variety), provide a list of "useful phrases" in the local language, usually footy related.
Examples of Handy Foreign Phrases include:
- There were quite a few for the Manchester United v. Chelsea Champions League final in Moscow, such as "There's only one Frank Lampard" and "you only sing when you're winning" in Russian.
- Also done when a football team is bought by a foreign business consortium - a recent example being the paper whose dedicated researchers went and found out how to sing "I'm Forever Blowing Bubbles" and chant "Alan Pardew's Barmy Army" in Icelandic, when West Ham United were bought by an Icelandic businessman.
- Occurred when Sven Goran Eriksson (Swedish) and later Fabio Capello (Italian) became England manager.
