  • All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.

  • Fans of the Harry Potter series are well known for seeing subtext between almost any two characters you care to mention (yes, that includes Hagrid/Dobby), but the author recently confirmed that she saw a tragic love between male characters, namely Dumbledore and Grindelwald.
    • Don't forget the considerable amount of Foe Yay between Harry and Draco, especially in the sixth book. For this, read the Foe Yay page.
      • And Harry/Snape.
    • Remus Lupin and Sirius Black. The fans can find obvious gay in every scene they have.
        • In the fifth Harry Potter book, Sirius and Lupin have a Held Gaze moment.
Cquote1

Lupin's eyes were fixed on Sirius.

  • 39 lines later*

"Personally.", said Lupin quietly, looking away from Sirius at last.

Cquote2
    • This troper would like to point out that JK explicitly states that Sirius and JAMES shared the closest friendship of the group. Make of that what you will.
        • You have to note though, that Lupin only got with Tonks after Sirus died.
      • One example: towards the beginning of the film version of Order of the Phoenix, in the first scene in 12 Grimmauld Place, there's a shot where Sirius just so happens to be sitting in front of a map, which Lupin just so happens to be reading over the top of Sirius's head. The result is a little like spooning. Also, it's been said that in an early draft of the same book, Rowling had them giving Harry one Christmas present between the pair of them, which is traditionally almost only done by couples, even though in their case it's also just a practical way for a wanted criminal and a man with very little money to handle shopping for presents.
    • It's worth pointing out that when JKR revealed Dumbledore was gay, the Dumbles/Grindelwald (or Grindeldore) shippers increased exponentially. Though she never actually said Grindelwald was gay or returned Dumbledore's affections, the implications were more than enough. We have yet to hear the end of their squeeing over being (partially) validated, since it occurs so rarely.
    • This troper was only surprised by Dumbledore's reveal because she figured the last book would have been a weird place to introduce a distracting element like a major gay character. Turns out it would have been, if it had been any more clearly pointed out. But sometimes when a character looks like they had a gay crush, it means they really did have a gay crush.
    • Harry and Ron, Who else thinks that their fight in the Goblet of Fire was a lovers spat?
      • The Soup completely backs you up on this.
      • Goblet of Fire also gave us the chapter where the Triwizard contestants had to rescue "the thing they would miss the most" from the bottom of the lake. For Harry? It's Ron. Complete with Dobby going all Shipper on Deck by demanding Harry rescue "his Wheezy." Awwww.... And yes, the slashers jumped all over this.
      • It was even more explicit in the Malay translation of Goblet of Fire, where it was translated as "the contestants have to rescue the thing they love the most". This troper did a Double Take when she read the line, and was very disappointed when she read the English version.
      • Harry asking Ron to go away with him before the wedding in TDH part one.
      • And later on, Ron pulling a shirtless Harry from the lake before their Crowing Moment of Heartwarming.
    • I would like to bring forth this little tidbit. "The Boy Who Scored, or whatever it is they call you these days." Thank you, Draco, for being so obvious! And, no I cannot be arsed to leaf through Half Blood Prince to find the exact quote.
      • Then allow me to do it for you.
Cquote1

"Where are you going?" Harry demanded.

"Yeah, like I'm really going to tell you, because it's your business, Potter," sneered Malfoy. "You'd better hurry up, they'll be waiting for 'the Chosen Captain' — 'the Boy Who Scored' — whatever they call you these days."

Cquote2
      • Draco's initial interest in Harry, their bickering Like an Old Married Couple throughout the series, and Draco's reluctance to confirm Harry's identity at Malfoy Manor.
      • "Malfoy was screaming and holding Harry so tightly it hurt." This is why every Yaoi Fangirl has page 634 of The Deathly Hallows dog-eared.
    • Cedric Diggory seems to cause this. I mean both Ron and Seamus have referred to his "good looks" more than once. Plus the narrative describes him as "handsome", and when you consider that the narrative basically presents things from Harry's opinion...
      • Not to mention Dudley asking Harry, "Who's Cedric, your boyfriend?" in Order of the Phoenix. Which Harry doesn't actually deny. And it comes after Harry asking Dudley, "What do you mean, I'm not brave in bed?"
      • And, with that in mind, consider how often Tom Riddle is described in physically flattering terms...
        • It's worth noting that Harry has thought of Tom Riddle as handsome seven times. Dumbledore, who's gay, only referred to Riddle as handsome once.
      • This troper has read published research on (male) homosexual relationships in British boarding schools which later translate onto heartbreaking death on the battlefield (specifically World War One), not to mention boys' school stories which feature or strongly suggest this trope, and cannot believe that Rowling isn't pulling a Shout-Out to both.
    • It's also worth mentioning that Harry himself has a lot of Stupid Sexy Flanders moments when Bill Weasley is around, and when watching Tom Riddle in the Pensieve. And at least one moment with Cedric Diggory...and he pretty much can't refer to Sirius's teenage self without dropping the word "handsome."
  • Sirius/James can be seen in Snape's Worst Memory in the 5th book. Sirius looks like he couldn't care less about the girls who are interested in him, and James, despite obviously being the ring leader of their group, goes out of his way to entertain Sirius.
    • Black later tells James he was watching Snape throughout the exam (presumably ignoring his erstwhile fangirls at the same time.) Perhaps there were other reasons James thought Black might want to see Snape sans undies...
  • This troper cannot be the only one who noticed a bit of one-sided Ho Yay between Ron and Viktor Krum. When Krum first showed up at Hogwarts, Ron gets jealous that Malfoy gets to speak to him before Ron can.
    • Ron even said he wanted Viktor to sleep in his room. "We could offer him a space a space in our dormitory, Harry ... I wouldn't mind giving him my bed, I could kip on a camp-bed."
  • In the chapter The Unbreakable Vow in HBP, the Malay version states that Harry is surprised to hear Draco talking rudely to Professor Snape, who is usually 'dihormatinya malah disayangi', which literally translates to 'respected, even loved by him'. Ahahaha...
    • Combine this with the GOF example above and it's safe to say that the Malay translators are either bad at their job or fangirls trying to get crap past the radar.
  • Colin Creevey's fanboy crush on Harry.
  • Harry's massive boycrush on the titular Prince in HBP.
Cquote1

Hermione: For weeks you carry around this book - practically sleep with it.

Harry: I do not sleep with it!

Ron: Yeah you do. You read a chapter everyday before you go to bed - all you do is read that bloody book!

Cquote2
      • That's not counting Ron sounding jealous
        • And the fact that Harry's boycrush is, by extention, on Snape.
  • Barty Crouch Jr. definitely seems to idolise Voldemort a bit too much. It's taken to the extreme in the film adaptation of Goblet of Fire when he actually wipes blood off Harry's arm saying that his blood now runs within the Dark Lord, before licking it off his finger.
    • Having been played by David Tennant certainly didn't hurt; his performance in that scene is frequently described as 'eager,' to put it mildly.
  • Dean and Seamus are seen dancing together(as in classic ballroom dance, rather... close)in the fourth movie.
    • Fred and George can be seen dancing together as well, but then, the two clearly bathe in Twincest.
    • Anyone got a screencap of these?
    • Yup, for Dean and Seamus.
      • Complete with smiling Hermione in the background.
  • Voldemort and Draco's bizare hug in The Deathly Hallows Part Two.
  • Snape's desire to look into Harry's eyes is... suggestive, as this comic so geniously illustrates.
    • Probably because Harry inherited those eyes from Lily, the only person Snape truly loved.
