Adaptation First: The anime and manga were licensed and began release in English before the first novel was translated (about two years before and about half a year before, respectively).
Averted with Disappearance, the translated novel being released in November 2010 and the dubbed movie in Summer 2011.
Also (barely) averted with the Manga adaption too, the story covers Volumes 7-9 with Volume 9 being released weeks before the movie.
Image Song (Every named female character (plus Kyon's sister), Kyon, Itsuki, and Taniguchi have either one or two, plus a personal rendition of the Dancing Theme (though not Taniguchi, who was second season only). It's a little ridiculous.)
Gender Flip - A non-authorised but extremely popular fan project, unofficially known as Suzumiya Haruhi no Seitenkan ("The Genderflips of Haruhi Suzumiya"), seems to be:
Fan-art hasn't decided how Haruhi's memetic hairband translates. Sometimes it's converted into a Hachimaki, sometimes into headphones that look a lot like those of Yoh Asakura's...and sometimes it's just a hairband.
At this point, most of us involved in the project, including most of us over at AnimeSuki, have come to the conclusion that a more proper term for Kyonko would be "darudere". To quote this post: "This is the term that has spring up to addresss Kyon(ko) or similar character traits. Unlike tsundere or yandere, Kyon isn't much of a proactive individual even when it comes to love interests, thus warranting this term. It would associate with those with a weary attitude, and like Kyon, goes on bouts of ranting, instead of the usual tsun behaviors (which are much more common)."
Ryou/Ryo - Ryoko Asakura's male counterpart. He's pretty much the same as his female counterpart (handsome, popular, cheerful... and utterly psycho) except that instead of knives he uses a katana as a weapon. Not to mention that he also wanted to rape Kyonko before killing her to see what it felt like.
Tsuruya-san - Tsuruya's male counterpart. Tall Genki Guy who is a classmate of Mitsuuru and seems to know something's going on. Doesn't get to keep the original's Rapunzel Hair, but still possesses the Cute Little Fangs. Quite a number of the fan art also protray him as having a mutual interest in female!Kunikida
Emiri Kimidori-kun - Emiri Kimidori's male counterpart. Not much can be said about his personality as of yet, since the most the fandom has to offer about him right now are the pictures and the genderbent Image Song.
Their classmates include Belldandy (Bridget Hoffmann/Asakura), Fuu Kasumi (Kari Wahlgren/Tsuruya, as well as Kyon's sis), Donatello (Sam Riegel/Taniguchi), Jim Hawking (Brianne Siddall/Kunikida), Henry Wong (Dave Wittenberg/President of the Computer Club), and Starfire (Hynden Walch/Emiri).
On the island we have Tamaki Suoh (Vic Mignogna/Yutaka), Saito (also Dave Wittenberg, who plays Keiichi) and Alex Rosewater (Michael Forest/Arakawa).
The Japanese voices are as hilarious: Haruhi is voiced by Aya Hirano, who also voiced Konata Izumi (who cosplayed and imitated Haruhi in an episode; Lucky Star is well-known for making at least one Haruhiverse reference per episode), and Mikuru shares a voice with Bandage BabeDeadpan SnarkerAbiru Kobushi (Yuko Goto).
And with a little mind twist you realize Haruhi's seiyuu voiced Misa Amane, the love rival of Kiyomi Takada, whose seiyuu voiced… Haruhi. You can't invent it.
What Could Have Been: Originally, Kyon was going to be an esper, but Tanigawa felt that Melancholy worked better with him as an ordinary student.
Dub only: For the second season's Endless Eight arc, Saban considered turning it into a Gag Dub, with the voice actors switching characters, or doing each episode with a different accent. Unfortunately, they decided to do a straight dub instead.
