Hurra Deutschland is the German equivalent of Spitting Image: A Puppet Show making fun of (mostly) politicians. Ran during 1989-91.
Tropes used in Hurra Deutschland include:
- Crossword Puzzle: Helmut Kohl is trying one and finds "'Chancellor of the [German] unity', four letters -- easy, that's me! -- 'M', 'E' -- nah, doesn't fit. But I am the chancellor of unity -- 'I'? Doesn't fit either!"
- Excuse Question: Several showmasters incl. Thomas Gottschalk ask a guy several of these ("How long did the Six-Day War last?"). He still fails and gets thrown into a garbage container or so. Then, Kohl gets asked more difficult questions...
- Nonverbal Miscommunication: His ministers want to tell Kohl (trying to make a speech after the reunification) that in a free market economy, you have to calculate. He misunderstands them using a cash register as "making cash" and then pointing their finger at their heads as "be stupid".
- Shout-Out: To "Die Da" of German rap band Die Fantastischen Vier. Also Parody. "Ist es dies' Jahr / dass wir zugrundegehn / oder dies' Jahr / dass wir am Abgrund stehn / oder dies' Jahr..."
