Developed by Naughty Dog for the PlayStation 2 and Play Station Portable, Jak and Daxter are a series of platformer games. As evidenced by the name, the series focuses on Jak, an Older Than They Look human (despite the ears), and Daxter a former human who was turned into an Ottsel.
The series consists of:
- Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (2001)
- Jak II (2003)
- Jak 3 (2004)
- Jak X: Combat Racing (2005)
- Daxter (2006) - Developed by Ready At Dawn
- Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier (2009) - Though conceived by Naughty Dog, the game was developed by High Impact Games.
In 2012, likes its follow PS2 giants of Sly Cooper and Ratchet & Clank, the series' first three games were re-released on the PlayStation 3 with remastered graphics. The duo also starred in Playstation Move Heroes alongside their PS2 contemporaries and later appeared in Play Station All Stars Battle Royale with a film version in development (as of 2022) though any word on a proper continuation of the series has been uncertain.
Tropes used in Jak and Daxter include:
- A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far Far Away: Despite looking like an elf, Jak's species is indeed human. Though Earth is never mentioned. It seems as though, whenever Jak and Daxter take place, it's so far in the future that humans have evolved into new forms and forgotten Earth.
- Cerebus Syndrome: The games tend to get darker as the series goes on.
- Crapsaccharine World: The main setting of the games. It's not a terrible world but it's not as pretty as the scenery suggests.
- Days of Future Past: Implied. Humanity appeared to at one point be a spacefaring species but whatever planet Jak and Daxter lives on has devolved to a lower tech state.
- Evil Counterpart Race: The Metal Heads to the Precursors.
- Genre Shift: Though the games are all in one timeline, the style of the games and storytelling all vary.
- Knight of Cerebus: Baron Praxis and Metal Kor.
- Only One Name: Everyone.
- Physical God: The Precursors blur the line between this and Sufficiently Advanced Alien.
- Precursors: The mystery of them drives the saga with their technology littering the landscape. They're Ottsels.
