  • Before making a single edit, Tropedia EXPECTS our site policy and manual of style to be followed. Failure to do so may result in deletion of contributions and blocks of users who refuse to learn to do so. Our policies can be reviewed here.
  • All images MUST now have proper attribution, those who neglect to assign at least the "fair use" licensing to an image may have it deleted. All new pages should use the preloadable templates feature on the edit page to add the appropriate basic page markup. Pages that don't do this will be subject to deletion, with or without explanation.
  • All new trope pages will be made with the "Trope Workshop" found on the "Troper Tools" menu and worked on until they have at least three examples. The Trope workshop specific templates can then be removed and it will be regarded as a regular trope page after being moved to the Main namespace. THIS SHOULD BE WORKING NOW, REPORT ANY ISSUES TO Janna2000, SelfCloak or RRabbit42. DON'T MAKE PAGES MANUALLY UNLESS A TEMPLATE IS BROKEN, AND REPORT IT THAT IS THE CASE. PAGES WILL BE DELETED OTHERWISE IF THEY ARE MISSING BASIC MARKUP.

These things about Joker (2019 film) are subjective - not everyone will agree with all of them.

  • Draco in Leather Pants: Thanks to being one of the most sympathetic versions of the Joker, it's easy to feel bad for Arthur. But plenty of fans are too willing to excuse the murder and mayhem he instigates purely out of spiteful cruelty near the end, long after any justification for his crimes can be reasonably made.
  • Fanfic Fuel: This take on the DC Universe is rife with this. It's easy to kill time speculating what kind of Batman this Bruce Wayne will grow up to be, what his relationship with the Joker will be like later in life, how one would adapt other supervillains like Harley Quinn and Penguin, or if secret societies like The League of Assassins or the Court of Owls could have any influence over Gotham's moral decay.
  • Fanon: There's a somewhat common headcanon that Gary is this universe's version of Gaggy, Joker's obscure pre-Harley Quinn sidekick thanks to his height, similar-sounding name, and status as the Arthur's only friend and a fellow entertainer to boot.
    • Similarly, some fans like to assume that the mention of Gotham having trouble with "Super Rats" is a reference to obscure minor villain Ratcatcher being active in this continuity.
  • Memetic Mutation: Joker dancing on a flight of stairs to Gary Glitter is one of the film's most iconic scenes, and has spawned countless parodies and memes.
    • "We Live in a Society" memes became more prominent than ever thanks to Joker calling out society's treatment of him during his Motive Rant.
      • Given George Costanza's famous utterance of the line, it's not uncommon to find him depicted as this film's Joker online.
    • "I used to think that my life was a tragedy, but now I realize it's a comedy."
    • "YOU GET WHAT YOU FUCKING DESERVE!"
  • Moral Event Horizon: Arthur killing the first two Wall Street guys is excusable since it's a clear act of self defense. But when he hunts down the third one after he flees and executes him in cold blood, there's no going back for him.
  • Narm Charm: Joker's dialogue when he's confronting Murray on his talkshow and ranting about his world view comes off as very cheesy and hard to take seriously when reading it, particularly the "They think we'll all just sit there and take it like good little boys. That we won't werewolf and go wild!" bit and his "Mentally ill loner" knock-knock joke. But it's sounds exactly the way you'd expect when someone as socially awkward as Arthur goes insane, and Joaquin Phoenix's excellent acting and the tense atmosphere make it one of the film's most nightmarish scenes.
