  • Awesome Music: Say what you will about the anime itself, but KOTOKO's Agony aka the ED is damn good.
  • Base Breaker: Chikane "The most polarizing lesbian in anime" Himemiya. See below to learn why.
  • Broken Base: The fandom is split on whether Chikane's rape of Himeko is justified in story, or whether it's a deplorable case of Double Standard Rape (Female on Female), to the point where it's caused a bit of an Edit War on the latter's trope page.
  • Designated HeroUnintentionally Unsympathetic: Chikane whines and wangsts about her ~forbidden and ugly~ love for Himeko... but steals her First Kiss when she's sleeping and causes her lots of emotional and mental distress, is creepily touchy-feely towards a girl from the archery club and to her maid Otoha (who is in love with her, and Chikane knows it), and ultimately sexually (and emotionally/mentally) abuses Himeko as a part of her Thanatos Gambit to "release" her from her destiny.. The audience is supposed to like her and think she's a desperate girl who loves Himeko enough to do horrible things for her, but for many she's actually a gaslighter and abuser who sees Himeko as a sort-of thing to possess, sexually abusing her because she considers Himeko too weak to face the Awful Truth and thinks it's okay to take away near all of her agency regarding it.. Even more so, all the other Orochis faced extremely cruel things in the past like sexual abuse (Corona), orphanhood (Girochi), faith crisis due to war (Sister Miyako), work exploitation plus disillusionment (Reiko), parental abuse (Tsubasa and Souma) and experimentation (Nekoko). . . whereas Chikane is a rich girl who's been extremely sheltered and privileged in comparison, only "suffering" due to her thoughts on Himeko and their bonds.
  • Die for Our Ship: Poor Souma, vilified by the fandom for being Chikane's rival for Himeko's love and the only one who seems to acknwledge how she raped Himeko..
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Chikane's horrible mistakes and actions, and especially her mental and ultimately sexual abuse of Himeko, tend to be forgiven and swept under the rug by her fans (especially Yuri fans) because she's a hot and Wangsty lesbian girl.
  • Hypocritical Fandom: Chikane rapes Himeko to save her from her destiny, and it's a-okay for many fans because "she did it for love". One should try thinking of Souma doing exactly the same thing with exactly the same reasoning...
    • Also, when some characters commit sexual abuse (like Girochi trying to assault Himeko, or his sister Miyako molesting Chikane), it's seen as a bad thing. When Chikane herself assaults Himeko, however, as said above the story sides with her.
  • Memetic Mutation: The ending image with Himeko embracing Chikane has been parodied oh so many times with other Yuri pairs or Yaoi pairs replacing them.
  • Moe: Himeko. Just Himeko.
  • Narm: The scene in which Chikane slays the followers of Orochi becomes hilarious when one notices that Nekoko the Cat Girl has an arrow in the ass, whereas Corona the Evil Diva has an arrown in her boob.
  • The Scrappy: While some of them doesn't really hate Souma, they wished that he would've just stayed further away from Chikane and Himeko.
  • Signature Scene: The ending of the first episode, which contains a juxtaposition of Souma's mecha with Chikane kissing Himeko on the left side. This famous moment is also immortalized as a Moderoid kit of the mech itself.
  • Unfortunate Implications: For some, the Broken Base deal smacks of "it's okay to rape a girl if it's to save her and the rapist is a girl too". Discussed in this review and all across this tag.
  • Values Dissonance: People accuse Reiko of being Wangsty since her Freudian Excuse is implied to be how she's been forced to change her stories more than once and has been screwed over by her editors. In reality, the manga industry is extremely cut-throat and involves lots of Executive Meddling, severe if not downright abusive work conditions, etc. It's next to no wonder that Reiko, in the flashback to the Orochi Necks' pasts, is seen working on her manga while sobbing her heart out.
  • Wangst: Chikane (and to a smaller degree, Reiko) has been accused of this, especially when the extremely tragic pasts of the Orochis in general are discussed. Chikane's wangst is sarcastically lampshaded here:
Cquote1

"So while Himeko is cleaning up Chikane’s mess, Chikane’s cuddling up with Darkness Almighty and getting a mental flashback of why all the other members of the team decided to become badguys. So now, altogether, the team is comprised of war orphans (Miyako and Girochi), people sexually exploited by their employers (Corona), artists who had to compromise their integrity to survive in the industry (Reiko), children barely cognizant that they’re being experimented on (Nekoko), abuse victims who had to kill for fear of not living to see tomorrow (Tsubasa and Souma)... And their leader, a spoiled princess with a huge walk-in closet of pretty dresses and an army of maids to help brush her long luscious locks of hair and put on her sexy burlesque underwear BUT she had a crush on a girl who went out on a date with a dude because she never bothered to ask said girl out herself, what with being so unaccustomed to what she wanted not falling into her lap. #one of these things is not like the others."
