A CD series of pop song covers performed by kids. Currently on the 37th CD of their main series, Kidz Bop has also released several special collection CDs.
This series contains the following tropes[]
- Age Inappropriate Art: A short list of songs that have been featured within that make you go "What the hell were they thinking?":
- Good Charlotte's "The Anthem"
- Trapt's "Headstrong"
- Hoobastank's "The Reason"
- Britney Spears' "Toxic". At best, it's a song about substance abuse. At worst, it uses substance abuse as a metaphor for sex. Not a single lyric was changed.
- Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started" (the album version amounts to "Let's Get Retarded"!)
- Bowling for Soup's "1985"
- Flo Rida's "Club Can't Handle Me", "Wild Ones", "I Cry" and "GDFR".
- Cee Lo Green's "Forget You"
- Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "Wake Me Up When September Ends". The latter of which is about Billie Joe Armstrong's deceased father. Oops....
- The All-American Rejects' "Move Along"
- Kesha's "Tik Tok"
- Pink's "Who Knew", "Don't Let Me Get Me", "So What" and "Perfect".
- Heck, most P!nk songs are just not appropriate for kids. The worst offenders: "Funhouse", "Fingers", "Stupid Girl" (though it does have a very good Aesop that girls need to use their brains instead of their bodies to get ahead in life and that fame whores like Paris Hilton aren't good role models for little girls to emulate) and "U and UR Hand".
- Kevin Rudolf's "Let It Rock"
- Katy Perry's "California Gurls"
- Christina Aguilera's "Not Myself Tonight"
- Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out", despite the lyrics being okay, is actually based on a pretty morbid event where two lovers got shot.
- Specifically, the shooting of Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. That is to say, the song is about the shooting of the guy whose death caused a little incident known as World War One...
- Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy actually called them on this, preventing "Dance, Dance" from being used for Kidz Bop 10 due to its sexual undertones.
- Hinder's "Lips of an Angel" and Buckcherry's "Sorry" have really strong lyrics. Panic! at the Disco are lucky that "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" wasn't on 10.
- LMFAO's "Party Rock Anthem". A song about drinking, sex, and hardcore partying isn't really "kidz" fare.
- Bruno Mars's "Locked Out Of Heaven"
- Justin Timberlake's "Suit And Tie"
- Ed Sheeran's "Sing" made 26, and it may be due to Ed Sheeran's status as a teen idol towards girls, but doesn't it scream kid-friendly like consuming copious amounts of tobacco and alcohol?
- Iggy Azalea's "Fancy". The alcoholism in this song makes "Sing" look tame in comparision.
- Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass": Sure, it was a upbeat massive hit with a positive message, but half of the song is about butts, how is that considered kid-friendly?
- Ariana Grande's "Love Me Harder", which has lyrics like "Can you feel the pressure between my hips?", which means exactly what one would think it means.
- "Feel Good Inc" by The Gorillaz, with lyrics like "In Melancholy town where we never smile" which they DO NOT CHANGE.
- "Thrift Shop" is the first song on "24". Yes, the Macklemore "Thrift Shop". You know, the one that contains excessive swearing throughout alongside him bragging about his genetalia to the club...
- fun's "Some Nights". A song about an existential crisis probably wouldn't appeal to kids.
- Maroon 5's "Makes Me Wonder", "Moves Like Jagger" and "Sugar".
- Ellie Goulding's "Love Me Like You Do". Because a song that cannot reasonably be interpreted nonsexually is obviously for kids. You would think that it's association with Fifty Shades Of Grey would prevent its inclusion, but it didn't (at least "Earned It" got spared).
- David Guetta's "Hey Mama" and Fifth Harmony's "Worth It" are on "30", adding onto Kidz Bop's long list of sexually-charged covers, although the latter was most likely covered to due being sung by a teen-targeted girl group (and The Weeknd really dodged a bullet this time around with "Can't Feel My Face" becoming the first #1 hit not to be covered since "The Monster").
- Wiz Khalifa's "See You Again". Yup, Kidz Bop singing about death, just what we needed.
- Andy Grammer's "Honey, I'm Good". Because a song about trying not to cheat on your significant other when you're drunk is just what kids needed.
- Jason Derulo's "Want To Want Me". Yet another song adding onto Kidz Bop's long list of obvious Intercourse with You songs.
- Rihanna's "FourFiveSeconds". The second line is "I might get a little drunk" and the song gets even more on questionable from there.
- "30" also brought down the famous "Gives You Hell" rule where an objectionable word in a title can hurt an otherwise clean song's chances with the inclusion of "Bad Blood" and "Fight Song". The former is rather objectionable in its own right, only making it because it's a Taylor Swift song, the latter, however, ranks with "Photograph", "Where Are Ü Now" and "Watch Me" as among the cleanest songs on the album, with the only other objectionable content being the reference to a match.
- Elle King's "Ex's And Oh's" on 31. A song about a woman's exes coming back to her for sex.
- Drake's "Hotline Bling" on 31. Because a song about a booty call is obviously for kids!
- Usher's "Burn"
- Evanescence's "Bring Me To Life" and "My Immortal"
- Bastille's "Pompeii". Hey kids, here's a song about a historical disaster that killed more than 10,000 people!
- Lana Del Rey's "Summertime Sadness" made 25. Yeah, because digres about suicide are obviously for kids.
- My Chemical Romance's "Sing" was a Target exclusive song. Kids love being the voice to show all the injustice in the world, right? At least "Welcome To The Black Parade" wasn't on 12.
- Bowling For Soup's "1985"
- Lady Gaga's "The Edge Of Glory"
- "How To Love" by Lil Wayne is a Target exclusive track on 21, it's first and probably last time they'll ever touch a Lil Wayne song.
- Shawn Mendes's "Stitches". This is a hit from a teen idol, so its inclusion is definitely less surprising or inappropriate, but some of the metaphors to death and injury may raise a few potential eyebrows, as with Tatlor Swift's "Bad Blood" on 30 (see above).
- Pitbull's "Timber" and "Don't Stop The Party".
- Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise": Yeah when I first saw that bikini top on er', she's poppin right out the South Georgia water, thought oh good Pord she had them long tanned legs.... Strangely enough, they change the lyrics that aren't dirty; "Let's get this thing stuck" gets changed to "Let's get this song stuck".
- Macklemore's "Downtown", which is basically the sequel to "Thrift Shop" combined with "Uptown Funk!". With excessive swearing, a mention of his "scrotum dragging upon the concrete", and lyrics like "A bad little mama with her ass in my face", it isn't really "kidz" fare.
- "Here" by Alessia Cara, a song with references to hook-up culture and being surronded by people smoking marijauna at a party.
- Ellie Goulding's "On My Mind", because a song about a one night stand is definitely appropriate for kids.
- Bowdlerize: Kidz Bop does this to songs that originally had violent or sexual content in their lyrics in order to make them more kid friendly. This makes their song choices interesting, to say the least.
- Their cover of Lady Gaga "Born This Way" is a particularly notable example where they manage to completely strip away the entire meaning of the song by cutting out any reference to the LGBT community or any explicit reference to being different for that matter.
- Adele's "Set Fire To The Rain". "Kissed my lips" gets changed to "Held my hand".
- Bowling for Soup's "1985" leaves in the Prozac but changes "Shake that ass" to "Shake it fast." (Ironically, this version is less censored than the version Bowling For Soup created specifically for Radio Disney.)
- Their cover of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" is a particularly notable example where they manage to completely strip away the entire meaning of the song by editing out references to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community, along with references to "being different", which kills the song's themes of standing out in a society that preaches being different, but really wants everyone to be alike.
- The only change made to Psy's "Gangnam Style" (aside from the removal of the first line in each verse) can be heard in the commercial itself. "HEEEEEEEEEY, HEY LADY!" At least they have an actual Korean kid singing the lyrics.
- A bizarre aversion in their version of Gnarls Barkley's "Crazy". "I can die when I'm done" is left in, but very minor changes, such as "I wanna be like that" becoming "I wanna be just like that" and "it looked like fun" becoming "it seemed like fun", are made.
- Kesha's "Tik Tok": "Bottle of Jack" gets changed to "And then I go and pack"; "Going out to the parties" gets changed to "Going to birthday parties"; "Tiiiiiippssssy" gets changed to "siiiiilllly"; "I'mma fight till' we see the sunlight" gets changed to "I'm alright till' we see thr sunlight". Not to mention the entire second verse (which has words like "swagger", "junk" and "po-po") is removed.
- Kevin Rudolf's "Let It Rock" changes "Stuck his middle finger to the world" to "Raised his hand & waved it to the world". Lil Wayne's verses are removed.
- In Weezer's "Beverely Hills", "crap" gets changed to "junk", but strangely not in their cover of Train's "50 Ways To Say Goodbye".
- The Pussycat Dolls' "When I Grow Up" from 15: "Boys call you sexy" gets changed to "Boys call you crazy" because the word "sexy" wasn't appropriate.
- Jason Mraz's "I'm Yours" from 15: "Open up your plans and damn you're free" gets changed to "Open up your plans and see you're free"; "And I will nibble your ear" gets changed to "I'll whisper in your ear".
- Fergie's "Glamorous" from 12: "If you ain't got no money take your broke ass home" gets changed to "If you ain't got no money, take your broke self home"
- Christina Aguilera's "Not Myself Tonight": "If you don't like it, fuck you!" get changed to "If you don't like it, boo hoo".
- will.i.am and Britney Spears' "Scream and Shout": "Britney, bitch" gets changed to "Kidz Bop Kids".
- Usher's "U Remind Me" from 2: "She was sexing everyone but me" becomes "She was sassing everyone & me".
- Avril Lavigne's "My Happy Ending" from 7: "All the shit that you do" gets changed to "All the stuff that you do".
- The Black Eyed Peas' "I Gotta Feeling" from 17: "Like, oh my God" gets changed to "Like, oh my gosh".
- Katy Perry's "Hot N Cold" from 15: "Yeah you PMS / Like a bitch, I would know" gets changed to "Yeah you change your mind / Like a girl, I would know". "California Gurls" from 18: "Sippin' gin and juice" gets changed to "Sippin' on a juice", and "Try’na creep a little sneak peek" gets changed to "Tryin’ to act a little crazy". Also in this chorus line, "Daisy Dukes, bikinis on top" wasn't appropriate, so they used "Fine, fresh, fierce. We got it on lock" two times in the chorus. "Firework" from 19: "Six feet under" gets changed to "Yeah, put under" because they knew "Six feet under" was too inappropriate. The One That Got Away" from 21: "We'd make out in your Mustang to Radiohead" gets changed to "We'd listen everyday to Radiohead"; "On my 18th birthday, we got matching tattoos" gets changed to "When it was my birthday, you brought me some balloons"; "Used to steal your parents liquor and climb to the roof" gets changed to "Used to eat your favorite ice cream and hang by the pool"; "Someone said you had your tattoo removed" gets changed to "Someone said you had your heartbreak removed". "Dark Horse" from 26: "Make me your Aphrodite" gets changed to "Make me your one and only". Juicy J's verse is removed.
- Pitbull and Kesha's "Timber": The first verse wasn't used because they knew the words "booty" and "sexy" were not appropriate, and Miley Cyrus was mentioned in this song. Also "Club jumping like Le Bron now" gets changed to "Club jumping like Kidz Bop now", and "Order me another round" gets changed to "Dance with me, we’re going round", and "Homie" gets changed to "Roomie".
- One Direction's "Live While We're Young" from 23: "Come on and let me sneak you out" gets changed to "Come on and let me take you out". Also, the chorus line "Let's go crazy, crazy, crazy 'till we see the sun" gets changed to "Let's go crazy, crazy, crazy dancing in the sun", and "Tonight, let's get some" gets changed to "Tonight, let's have fun". "Story of My Life" from 26: "She told me in the morning/She don’t feel the same about us in her bones" gets changed to "She told me in the hallway/She don’t feel the same about us in her bones"; "It seems to me that when I die, these words will be written on my stone" gets changed to "It seems to me that when I go, these words will be written on my own".
- Icona Pop's "I Love It": "I threw your shit into a bag" gets changed to "I threw your stuff into a bag" (also used in the radio edit), "You’re from the 70s, but I’m a 90s bitch!" gets changed to "You’re from the 70s, but I’m a Kidz Bop kid!", "I crashed my car into the bridge" gets changed to "I drove your car across the bridge." The first two edits also appear in the radio edit, while the third is edited to "a 90s chick".
- Macklemore's "Thrift Shop" has changed quite some words in this song: Every instance of "hella" is changed to "super". "I'm gonna pop some tags" gets changed to "I'm gonna rock some tags" because they knew pop was too inappropriate. "This is fucking awesome" gets changed to "This is really awesome", "Walk up to the club like ‘What up I got a big cock?’" gets changed to "Walk up to the club like ‘What up I got a hit song?’"; "I'm so pumped to buy some shit from the thrift shop" gets changed to "I'm so pumped to buy some clothes from the thrift shop"; "So damn frosty" gets changed to "So so frosty"; "Damn! That's a cold ass honky!" gets changed to "Hey! That guy on the Marquee!"; "Probably shoulda' washed this, smells like R. Kelly's sheets" gets changed to "Probably shoulda' washed this, smells like my baseball cleats"; "Piiisssssss" get changed to "Ewwwwww"; "But shit, it was 99 cents!" gets changed to "But hey, it was 99 cents"; "Dookie leather brown jacket" gets changed to "Chocolate leather brown jacket"; "I bought a skeet blanket" gets changed to "I bought an old blanket"; "Hell no" gets changed to "Oh no"; "That motherfucker" gets changed to "Like it's awesome"; "Hella won't" gets changed to "Really won't"; "I'm in this big ass coat" gets changed to "I'm in this real big coat". "Can't Hold Us" from 24: "We'll fight 'til it's over" gets changed to "We'll dance 'til it's over". "On my I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T shit hustlin'" gets changed to "On my I-N-D-E-P-E-N-D-E-N-T fest talker"; "I'm so damn grateful" gets changed to "I'm so so grateful"; "But that's what you get when Wu Tang raised you" gets changed to "But that's what you get when Kidz Bop raised you"; "And I'm eating at the beat like you gave a little speed to a great shark on Shark Week" gets changed to "And I'm beating at the beat like you gave a great push to a great shark on Shark Week".
- Justin Bieber's "Beauty and the Beat" from 24: "Baby, do it like you do" gets changed to "Baby, dance it like you do", and "Body rock, girl I feel your body rock" gets changed to "Really rock, girl I can see you really rock".
- Anna Kendrick's "Cups (Pitch Perfect’s When I’m Gone)": "Two bottles of whiskey for the way" gets changed to "I got my memories for the way".
- Capital Cities' "Safe and Sound": "Even if we're six feet underground" gets changed to "Even if we're so far underground". Once again, they knew "six feet under" was too inappropriate.
- Selena Gomez's "Come and Get It" from 24: "This love will be the death of me / But I know I’ll die happily" gets changed to "This love will be the best of me / But I know I’ll live happily".

- Jessie J's "Domino" from 22: "I'm feeling sexy and free" gets changed to "I'm feeling happy and free", "Dirty dancing in the moonlight, take me down like I'm a domino" gets changed to "Now we’re dancing in the moonlight, knock me down like I'm a domino".

"Alejandro" from 18: "Don’t want to kiss / Don’t want to touch / Just smoke my cigarette and hush" gets changed to "Don’t want to miss / Don’t want too much / Just walk away from me and hush", and "But her boyfriend's like a dad, just like a dad" gets changed to "But her boyfriend's like a friend, just like a friend". "Born This Way" from 20: "A different lover is not a sin" gets changed to "A different viewpoint is not a sin".
- Cascada's "Evacuate The Dancefloor": "'Cause it feels like a overdose" gets changed to "'Cause it feels like it’s really close", and "This beat is killing me" gets changed to "This beat is moving me".
- Bruno Mars' "Just the Way You Are" from 19: "I can kiss her all day if she lets me" gets changed to "I can watch her all day if she lets me". "The Lazy Song" from 20: "Meet a really nice girl/Have some really nice sex/And she's going to scream out, 'This is great, oh my God, this is great." gets changed to "Meet a really nice girl, send a really nice text. - Train's "Hey, Soul Sister" from 18: "Like a Virgin, you’re Madonna" gets changed to "Like a popstar, you’re Madonna". "Drive By" from 22: "Oh but that one night, was more than just right" gets changed to "Oh but that one day, was more than OK".
- Bastille's "Pompeii" from 26: "The rubble or our sins?" gets changed to "The rubble or our wins?"
- Justin Timberlake's "Not a Bad Thing" from 26: "When someone cuts your heart open with a knife/Now you’re bleeding" gets changed to "When someone breaks your heart open with a lot[?]/Now you’re hurting".
- John Legend's "All of Me" from 26: "Love your curves and all your edges" gets changed to "Love your words and all your edges", thus stripping away a reference to loving women no matter what their shapes or sizes are.
- Paramore's "Ain't it Fun" from 26: "You can ring anybody’s bell to get what you want" gets changed to "You can ring anybody’s cell to get what you want". What, was "bell" not modern enough?
- Lorde's "Team" from 26: "So all the cups got broke" gets changed to "So the dishes got broke". Also, "blood stains" gets changed to "grass stains". And "Grey Goose" gets changed to "Gold Goose".
- OneRepublic's "All the Right Moves" from 18: "Over the world is death" gets changed to "Over the world that's lead". "Counting Stars" from 26: "I feel something so right by doing the wrong thing" gets changed to "I feel something so right by doing the right thing".

- Beyonce's "Single Ladies" from 18: "I’m up on him, he up on me / Don’t pay him any attention … Don’t be mad once you see that he want it" gets changed to "I’m into him, he’s into me / Don’t pay him any attention … Don’t be mad once you see that he’s into it". The entire second verse was removed.
- The Script's "Breakeven" from 18: "Just prayin' to a God that I don’t believe in" gets changed to "Just prayin’ to a thing that I don’t believe in".
- B.o.B. and Bruno Mars' "Nothin' on You" from 18: "And you wild when you ain’t got nothin’ on / haha" gets changed to "And you out when you ain’t got anyone"; "Most of it really was for the hell of the fun" gets changed to "Most of it really was for the lot of the fun"; "Tryna' chase skirts livin' in the summer sun" gets changed to "Tryna' chase skirts livin' in the summer sun". The entire bridge was removed.
- B.o.B. and Hayley Williams' "Airplanes" from 19: "After all the partying, smashin' and crashin" gets changed to "After all the partying, smashin' and crashin'"; "Rapping for the hell of it" gets changed to "Rapping for the thrill of it"; "Started this shit" gets changed to "Started this hit".
- Taio Cruz's "Dynamite" from 19: "Just what the fuck I came here to do" gets changed to "Just what it is I came here to do".
- Buckcherry's "Sorry" from 14: "I love how you kiss, I love all your sounds" gets changed to "I love how you sing, I love how it sounds". Their cover bizzarely averts the Never Say "Die" trope (see below).
- P!nk's: "So What" from 15: "And you're a tool" gets changed to "And you're a fool".
- Kelly Clarkson's "Never Again" from 12: "I hope when you’re in bed with her, you think of me" gets changed to "I hope when you’re out with her, you think of me." "Stronger" from 22: "You know the bed feels warmer sleeping here alone" gets changed to "You know the light feels better sitting here alone".
- Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" from 22: "I beg and borrow and steal" gets changed by "I beg and borrow and feel".
- Hot Chelle Rae's "Tonight, Tonight" from 20: "I woke up with a strange tattoo" gets changed to "I woke up with a strange hairdo".
- fun.'s "Some Nights": "Oh, Lord, I'm still not sure what I stand for" gets changed to "Oh no, I'm still not sure what I stand for", and "Who the fuck wants to die alone all dried up in the desert sun?" gets changed to "Who the heck wants to be alone all dried up in the desert sun?"
- Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" from 24: "You got me alone" gets changed to "You saw me alone"; "A new notch in your belt is all I'll ever be" gets changed to "An Oh God in your head is all I'll ever be". The word "drowning" is replaced with "falling".
- Calvin Harris and Ellie Goulding's "I Need Your Love" from 25: "I feel so high" gets changed to "I feel so good".
- Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" from 27: "And my flow retarded" gets changed to "And my flow just started". The "Let's get drunk on the minibar" verse is omitted, as well as the first and last verses.
- Katy Perry's "This is How We Do" from 27: "Sipping on sun" gets changed to "Silverlake sun"; "Slow cooking pancakes for my boy" gets changed to "Slow cooking pancakes for my girls"; "Everything's on me and then hazy" gets changed to "Everything's all neon and hazy"; "Hell yeah" gets changed to "Oh yeah"; "Big hoops, and the room leaves" gets changed to "Big hoops and maroon lips; "Day drinking at the Wildcats" gets changed to "Day dreaming at the Wildcat". The lines "This one goes out to" this or who are removed.
- Bruno Mars should be counting his blessings that Kidz Bop 20 passed over "Grenade". His first hit, "Just The Way You Are," was kid-friendly enough for 19 and was a near-lock for the album the whole time. "The Lazy Song" did make it in, but instead of using the media-friendly version that skips over the entire line about him having sex with some girl he just met, they change it to him sending her text messages and her writing back. "Locked Out of Heaven" made it into 23, though "Sex" was changed to "Love". "When I Was Your Man" seemed all but certain to make it onto 24, but surprisingly, it got snubbed. Thankfully 26 skipped "Young Girls". Meet a really nice girl send her some really nice texts And she's gonna write back "you're so great" (OMG you're so great) Yea-aah
- Nicki Minaj's "Starships" from "22": "Have a drink, clink, have a Bud Light" gets changed to "Have a thing, clink, have a good night"; "Bad bitches like me is hard to come by" gets changed to "Good people like me is hard to come by"; "The patron-on, let's go get it on" gets changed to "Bring it on, on, let's go move it on"; "I'mma blow all my money and I don't give two shits" gets changed to "I'mma blow all my money and give into it; "Fuck who you want, and fuck who you like" gets changed to "Dance with who you want, and dance with who you like"; "I lent you a drink, you a drink, you a drink" gets changed to "And if you're with me, you're free, free, free"; "Can't stop, 'cause we're so high" gets changed to "Can't stop, 'cause we're so fly"; "Higher than a motherfucker" gets changed to "We're Kidz Bop and we're taking over." They could have used the Glee version "Higher than any other", but they knew the word higher wasn't appropriate enough.
- Gavin DeGraw's "Not Over You" from 22: "Damn! Damn, girl you're doing well" gets changed to "Hey! Hey, girl you're doing well".
- "Moves Like Jagger" by Maroon 5 might actually be worse after being Bowdlerized.
- Taylor Swift's "Shake it Off" from 27: "My ex-man" gets changed to "My ex-boy"; "With the hella good hair" gets changed to "With the really good hair".
- Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" on 27: "I got that boom boom that all the boys chase" gets changed to "I got them dance moves that all the boys chase"; "All the right junk in all the right places" gets changed to "All the right moves in all the right places"; "We know that shit ain't real" gets changed to "We know that it ain't real"; "Boys like a little my booty to hold at night" gets changed to "Don't let it keep you at home in your room at night"; "Silicone Barbie doll" gets changed to "Fake plastic Barbie doll"; "I'm bringin' booty back" gets changed to "I'm bringin' it all back"; "Skinny bitches" gets changed to "Skinny ladies".

- Ke$ha's "Praying" from 37: "'Cause you brought the flames and you put me through hell" gets changed to "'Cause you brought the flames and you know it too well".
- The song ended after the second chorus was sung. The entire bridge and third chorus were omitted. Plus the song got a semitone higher. Why can't the Kidz Bop Kids sing this song in a normal pitch?
- Celebrity Star:
- Sean Kingston appeared on 14 to sing "Take You There" with the Kidz Bop Kids.
- Zendaya appeared in the music video for their cover of "Hot N' Cold", though she didn't sing in said cover.
- Becky G briefly sung for Kidz Bop in 2010.
- Child Popstar: The best known example in 21st century America.
- The Cover Changes the Meaning: Many of the bowdlerized versions of the songs have their meaning changed pretty drastically. Especially any songs that are centered around drug use or drinking.
- A recent example is their cover of DNCE's "Cake By The Ocean", which in the original version uses cake as a metaphor for sex, whereas the Kidz Bop version is about eating literal cake.
- The original "Love Me Like You Do" is a song about Ana and Christian's erotic relationship from Fifty Shades of Grey. Kidz Bop's version is an innocent teenage love song.
- "Hotline Bling" went from being about a booty call to a long distance relationship.
- "Starving" went from a mature relationship song about about a new, amazing feeling after having sex with a boy to being about puppy love/looking at a boy.
- Darker and Edgier: Once upon a time, Kidz Bop would not lay their hands on any PG-13 rated song. Nowadays, having a huge pop hit and being passed over by Kidz Bop is seen as the music industry's equivalent of dodging a bullet. Proof of Kidz Bop's increasingly liberal approach to song selection can be seen in its track record of covering Hot 100 number one singles. For example, out of 18 #1 singles in 2000, only seven ("Smooth", "What A Girl Wants", "Amazed", "Try Again", "Be with You", "Everything You Want", and "Come On Over Baby") appeared on a Kidz Bop album. Flash-forward to 2015, and "Cheerleader" is the thirteenth consecutive Hot 100 #1 single to have made it onto a Kidz Bop album. This is inverted with "Locked Away", which is inexplicably absent from the series despite being a perfectly clean and massive hit.
- Getting Crap Past the Radar: Despite being aimed towards children, some inappropriate lyrics remain unaltered here and there. While it's possibly on accident or due to Kidz Bop's misinterpretation of the lyrics, what slips by is quite surprising to say the least.
- In 2009, when McDonald's put Kidz Bop CDs in their Happy Meals, one of the CDs featured a cover of Gavin Degraw's "I Don't Want to Be", with the line "I'm tired of lookin' round rooms" possibly missung or misheard as "I'm tired of fuckin' round rooms". This resulted in controversy and complaints surronding McDonald's.
- The Kidz Bop edit of Justin Timberlake's "Suit and Tie" is still very suggestive — the chorus includes the promise of "leaving it all on the floor tonight" among other references.
- Their cover of Barenaked Ladies' "One Week" leaves intact the line "Gotta get in tune with Sailor Moon, cause that cartoon has got the boom anime babes that make me think the wrong thing."
- Their cover of Elle King's "Ex's And Oh's" doesn't change the line "Like ghosts they want me to make them O" which is an interpretation for an orgasm.
- They literally get "crap" past the radar in their cover of Train's "50 Ways To Say Goodbye" by leaving the "crappy purple Scion" line intact.
- In their cover of Flo Rida's "Wild Ones", every alcoholic beverage reference is removed, but a bizzare aversion is the word "vodka" in the line "Gotta move over like too much vodka".note .
- In their cover of Mark Ronson's "Uptown Funk!", the term "white gold", which is a street term for cocaine, remains intact.
- "Me, Myself & I" has the line "We don't take L's, we just make M's" kept in, despite the L being a term for a line (of cocaine).
- Long Runner: They've released 36 CDs and counting from their main series since 2001.
- Lyrical Dissonance: As the entry for Age-Inappropriate Art points out, there are plenty of songs with dark themes that were already Lyrical Dissonance... and this version winds up even cheerier sounding.
- Never Say "Die": Among other examples, the word is usually altered on most ocassions:
- Gotye's "Somebody that I Used to Know" had the line "So happy you could die" changed to "So happy you could cry."
- Selena Gomez's "Come and Get It" had the line "I'll die happily" changed to "I'll live happily".
- One Direction's "Live While We're Young" had the line "It seems to me that when I die, these words will be written on my stone" changed to "It seems to me that when I go, these words will be written on my own".
- fun's "Some Nights" had "Die along" changed to "Be alone".
- MAGIC's "Rude" had the line "You say I'll never get your blessing till the day I die" changed to "You say I'll never get your blessing till the day I fly".
- Arianna Grande's "Break Free" had the line "I only wanna die alive" changed to "I only wanna come alive".
- Twenty One Pilots' "Ride" had the lines "I'd die for you" changed to "I'd sing for you", and "Who would you die for?" changed to "Who would you live for?"
- G-Easy's "Me, Myself and I" had the line "Solo ride until I die" changed to "Solo ride until I ride".
- On the 2016 Halloween album, there was a cover of "This is Halloween" that changed "Trick or treat till the neighbors gonna die of fright" to "Trick or treat till the neighbors gonna scream of fright".
- Camila Cabello's "Crying in the Club" had the line "You think, that you'll die without him/her" changed to "You think, that you'll cry without him/her".
- There are ocassionally bizarre aversions, such as their original cover of "This is Halloween", Destiny's Child's "Survivor", Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out", Gnarls Barkely's "Crazy", Nickelback's "If Everyone Cared", Buckcherry's "Sorry", P!nk's "So What" and Zara Larsson & MNEK's "Never Forget You".
- Oh My Gods!: Inverted; references to the Lord's name in vain are usually modified, although bizarrely left intact on some occasions, like in their cover of Florida Georgia Line's "Cruise (remix)", Taylor Swift's "Shake it Off" and DJ Khaled, Justin Bieber & Lil Wayne's "I'm the One".
- Xtreme Kool Letterz: The usage of Z instead of S in the title.
