Kusatta

Kusatta Kyoushi no Houteishiki (腐った教師の方程式 aka Bad/Rotten Teacher Equation) is a 10 volume manga created by Kodaka Kazuma, which ran from 1993 to 2005 in the Lynx magazine from Editorial Biblos. It spawned two OVA's from 1995 and a sequel, Ren'ai Houteishiki, published in two volumes in 2006.

When Atsushi Arisawa is old enough to go to highschool, he enrolls at the rather run-down Jougaouka High to be near their School Nurse, Masami "Ma-chan" Shibata, who was his friend and childhood crush. Unbeknownst to Atsushi, however, Masami no longer works at the school and his younger brother, Masayoshi is now the nurse AND the coach of the basketball club.

Atsushi, who has not seen "Ma-chan" for YEARS, mistakes Masayoshi for Masami and is horrified because to him, it appears that Ma-chan's personality has done a complete 180. Also, Atsushi's best friend at school Kouji Inagaki is totally in love and constantly trying to make-out with him, so Atsushi's life at Jougaoka is hell... until he starts thinking that maybe the new Ma-chan isn't so bad afterall and that, maybe he actually likes the way Ma-chan is now.

Until of course, he finds out that Masayoshi isn't Masami. But even then, Atsushi decides to deal as much as possible, and ends up falling in love again — this time, with the real Masayoshi. In the meantime Kouji is still in love with Atsushi but also develops Belligerent Sexual Tension with his and Atsushi's classmate Yuriko Hayase, the actual Masami is revealed to be in a relationship with the Jougaoka teacher Tooru Hagiwara (and from quite a while!), and lots of things happen from then on...

Tropes used in Kusatta Kyoushino Houteishiki include:

  • Eighties Hair: Most notably Masayoshi who sports a mullet. Thankfully, Art Evolution kicks in and is not as noticeable in later volumes.
  • Almighty Mom: Kouji's mother
  • Arranged Marriage: More like "arranged date that can potentially go into marriage", for Masayoshi and Mizuha. They decide to just be friends.
  • Attempted Rape: When he was a high school student, Masayoshi was almost raped by the same guy from the OVA that was gonna sexually assault Atsushi.
    • This turns out to be a plot point: Masami refuses to go all the way with Tooru because he was molested when he was a teen, and sees himself as Defiled Forever. Tooru tells him that he isn't soiled, though.
    • And much later, a Yuriko who is in an Heroic BSOD due to her growing feelings for Kouji almost ends up subjected to Date Rape by a classmate during the school trip to Kyoto. As she's trying to escape, Kouji catches on and confronts the guy, helping her to get away and then letting her cry into his chest.
  • Beta Couple: Masami and Tooru, to the Love Triangle between Masayoshi, Atsushi and Kouji. As Kouji steps out, he and Yuriko become another BC to Masayoshi and Atsushi's Official Couple ordeals.
  • Bifauxnen: Mizuha Touda
  • Big Brother Instinct: Inverted: Masayoshi may be the youngest of the Shibata brothers... but he is very, very, VERY protective of Masami. (Very)
  • Bi the Way: Kouji loves Atsushi, but he adquires quite the Belligerent Sexual Tension with Yuriko. Since Masayoshi and Atsushi are the Official Couple, Kouji and Yuriko get together and eventually marry.
  • Boys Love
  • Can't Hold His Liquor: Masami and Masayoshi. Kouji to a lesser extent.
  • Childhood Marriage Promise: Apparently, there was one between Atsushi and Kouji.
  • Coming of Age Story: Specifically, for Atsushi. The plot follows him from age 16 to age 21.
  • Coming Out Story: For several characters.
  • Cute Little Fangs: Kouji
  • First Kiss: Kouji, for Atsushi. Masayoshi kisses Mizuha in chapter 25.
  • Genius Ditz: Atsushi may lack common sense at times, but he's pretty booksmart.
  • High School Sweethearts: Tooru and Masami. Kouji and Yuriko.
  • Hot For School Nurse, ah, Teacher: Atsushi invokes the trope by deliberately attending the school where his beloved "Ma-chan" is supposed to work, motivated by his love for him. And then he falls for "Ma-chan"'s younger brother, the one who actually works there...
    • Ironically, Atsushi is at the end of the trope when he becomes a student teacher in an all-girls institute.
  • The Idiot From Osaka: Kouji
  • Informed Attribute: Tooru being hairy.
  • Insecure Love Interest: Masami.
  • Manly Tears: Tooru sheds these quite often.
  • Parents as People: Tooru's parents are very traditional, but they do love their eldest son: when Toru intruduces Masami as his boyfriend to them, they're not exactly happy but do their best to understand their situation. (Plus Tooru's younger brother Kyouhei is all for them being together)
  • Rescue Romance: Yuriko and Kouji's Relationship Upgrade comes some time after he saves her from being raped by one of their classmates.
  • Sailor Fuku: Jougaoka has fukus for the girls and gakurans for the boys.
    • When Atsushi goes through his teacher intership, he works at the all-girls Tokiwa School, which has Western uniforms.
  • Shipper on Deck: Yuriko ships Atsushi/Masayoshi quite hard. Eventually, so does Masami.
  • Shipping Torpedo: Being super protective of Masami, Masayoshi isn't thrilled to see him with Tooru.
  • Tsundere: MA SA YO SHI.
    • YU RI KO.
  • Yaoi Fangirl: Yuriko. And some Tokiwa High girls.
