In North American media, there is a stereotypical perception that Latin America is a racially homogeneous region of people with olive skin and dark hair, and a mix of European and Native American features. Thus, if Latino characters appear in a work, chances are, they will look this way. In Real Life, this is a specific ethnic group ("mestizo" in Spanish-speaking countries or "pardo" in Brazil), and Latin America is one of the world's most ethnically and culturally diverse regions.

Black Latinos are will often be lumped in with African-Americans, unless they reveal otherwise, and Asian Latinos are practically unheard of, even though Brazil is home to significant Japanese and Middle Eastern (mostly Lebanese) communities.
