Shinshunkaden

Legend of Chun-Hyang (Japanese: 新・春香伝 Hepburn: Shin Shunka-den) is a manga by CLAMP, running from 1992 to 1994. It's a retelling of a traditional Korean legend about a spirited young girl...

Chun-Yang, the heroine, is a skilled swordswoman who is rebelling against the Yangban, a tyrannical warlord who oversees her village. However, despite her abilities, there is no hope of freedom unless the Amenosa, a secret Korean government official, finds out that the warlord is abusing his power and can use the law to stop his cruelty. Accepting the help of a handsome, if lecherous, young man by the name of Mong Ryong, Chun-Yang goes to free both her home and her beloved mother Wall Mae, a beautiful mudang (shaman) and local healer who was taken by the warlord for his own base desires...

Wall Mae refuted the warlord's advances, but ultimately kills herself to protect her honor. Chun-Hyang and Mong Ryong arrive too late to save her, though Mong Ryong reveals himself to be the Amenosa and judges the warlord unworthy of his title, stripping him of his power and freeing the lands. Despite this small victory, poor Chun-Hyang is devastated by the death of her mother and takes up Mong Ryong's offer to travel the land....

Only one volume, CLAMP has said the story is not completed, and that they would like to continue it sometime in the future. There's also a drama CD of 1994, with Yuri Shiratori as Chun-Hyang and Ryotaro Okiayu as Mong Ryong.
