Lethal Weapon is a 1987 action comedy film. By-The-Book Cop Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) is partnered with deranged, suicidal Cowboy Cop Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson). Murtaugh and Riggs hate each other, but are forced to work together when, while investigating the murder of Murtaugh‘s Vietnam War buddy Michael Hunsaker’s (Tom Waits) daughter, they uncover a massive drug shipment ring led by General Peter McCallister (Mitchell Ryan) and his right hand man Mr. Joshua (Gary Busey). As things get increasingly dangerous and personal, these mismatched cops find they have more in common than they believe.
List of Tropes That are Too Old For This Shit
- Asshole Victim: Hunsaker was part of the heroin smuggling ring, and thus isn’t met with much sympathy when Joshua kills him.
- Big Bad: General McCallister.
- Cruel and Unusual Death: Amanda Hunsaker’s pimp is shot by Riggs and tangled in the plastic cover of a pool, drowning him.
- Darker and Edgier: The darkest of the Lethal Weapon series.
- Deadpan Snarker: Riggs.
- The Dragon: Mr. Joshua.
- Pre-Mortem One-Liner: Murtaugh, before shooting McCallister’s driver: “No way you live, no way.”
- Psycho for Hire: Mr. Joshua. Lampshades by a drug dealer.
