Der Untertan is a book by German author Heinrich Mann, brother of Thomas Mann. It was translated into English several times under the titles Man of Straw, The Patrioteer, The Kaiser's Lackey and The Loyal Subject. The titular subject is Diederich Hessling, son of the owner of a paper factory in the fictional small Prussian city of Netzig, who lives during the reign of Wilhelm II.
